Re: QSX Enclosure Request

Even other colours wouldn't be Ok in direct sunlight.?

Non-black does help... but does not ELIMINATE a heating situation.?

Here in QTH KM46 with harsh wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling blue sky and sunshine much of the year, and temp 33C today for example (even in late September) - the dominant choice of car colour is white (including mine). Maybe 75% of cars or more, are white. There's a belief that it helps in the sun - and probably it DOES help... But believe me it is still burning hot to touch, and you wouldn't want to sit in it without the air con.?

Same applies to heatsinks. Black is a better radiator than silver. But I read somewhere that the performance advantage of a black anodized heatsink compared to a raw (silvery colour) aluminium one is only 3 to 8%.?

Silvery vs Black HELPS a bit but won't SOLVE completely. So a white enclosure wouldn't fix *everything* though it may mitigate a problem slightly. Personally I'm not sure I would want to leave my nice radio in direct sunlight regardless of the colour of its enclosure!

My first FT-817 died the first day it was used in the UK sun.? The case was too hot to touch when it failed (used on receive only so not due to Tx abuse).? The VFO control stopped working.? Maybe this exposed a latent fault but even so I now to not use the replacement in the sun.? I usually place inside a cardboard box to shade it from the sun which restricts its usability.

I agree that black looks good but be wary.

Hi Al

That's an interesting request. I was planning black. It looks nice.?

I'm curious how often a radio is likely to be subjected to a hot sun during operation, such as Alabama... if it is that hot for the radio, wouldn't it be that hot for the operator too? Wouldn't you sit under a tree, or a shade of some sort??

I'm sure Hans is getting overwhelmed with QSX requests, but I had to throw this one in before the QSX gets too far along.? My request is please don't make the enclosure black.? When you have a xcvr outside in the hot Alabama sun, a black case gets really hot - too hot to touch in fact.? And the high enclosure temperature probably doesn't do the electronics and display much good either.? A light color is preferable, like white or yellow.? I suppose red or blue might be useable, but I imagine those would get fairly warm also.? Actually, a gold or yellow anodized enclosure would be nice, but I suppose anodizing would increase the cost.
