Re: What SWR/Power meter are you using? #qcx

All:

There's an article coming out in the Nov issue of QST that has a combination dummy load and watt meter that costs about $20 to build. It uses the venerable quart of mineral oil, but can easily take over 150W. It looks like this:

The display box uses banana jacks to attach to the DL. Not as neat as the professional watt meter, but it works well and would save you $130.

Ted,
QCX = $50
You don't need to spend $150 on a power meter if you don't want to.

You said that home brew appeals.
If you have not already, see if membership of the GQRP Club has anything to offer?

??6 per annum.
Even G0UPL used to be a contributor before he became famous...... ;-)
You can purchase their back issues DVD and instantly catch up with the world of QRP since the publication of SPRAT No# 1.
the latest version covering issues 1 - 172.
Price - members ?5 (6.5 Euro, USA $8.0, AU$9.5, and NZ$10.5)
Non-members ?12

Fittingly issue No#1 had a design for a low power SWR that you can plagiarise something from.

Else for Kits:-

The Sandford Wattmeter

WIDE RANGE POWER METER

A Google search will over-load you with designs, using everything from a germanium diode to AD8303 IC's and everything in-between.
(Measuring RF Power by thermocouples is still used in some professional instrumentation.)
Do like Chris, build, don't buy !
YMMV

About to take my UK foundation licence while building a QCX40.

Just curious as to what you all use as a SWR/Power meter with your QCXs'.
I am minded to build one if I can find a design or kit that fits my budget.

Hats off to Hans for providing a new conduit to attract young and old into AR.
