Is Extreme Burner AVR downloadable through anywhere but fishy third-party sites?? I can't find one so far.

The home site sends you to a site that asks you to accept emails in return for the program. It's your choice. You do not have to use it.
Have you tried the USBasp on another computer in case there is some incompatibility with the first?
