Sounds quite strange, if the MCU does not initialize the LCD, it should show one row of squares and the other row clear. Starting it without the MCU should give you this and adjusting the contrast here (to one row with squares) will enable you to see if it says something with the MCU plugged in.
You could test the LCD with only pin 1-3 connected to a 5V supply and a pot just as in the schematic. If it doesn't display one row of blocks then the LCD is probably broken.
