Chris, during my last SOTA activation, I used a 20.60 m long EFHW on the MTR3B V4 for the 40/20/15 bands without any problems. ZL1TM was also logged on 15 m despite unfavorable conditions.
I suspect your station is "floating" and therefore very sensitive to changes in capacitance relative to the antenna wire. This can be caused in case of changes in the hand capacitance, for example via the headphone and microphone connection cables.
Switching between the CW and SSB band segments may cause too large a change in VSWR, so this won't work without retuning.
By the way: My radios are always near the ground, never on a table, and that may be why they operate without problems, hi.
