This is incorrect; the I/Q mode affects only the USB output, changing it from demodulated audio to I/Q audio.
The earphone output is always demodulated audio, and is not affected by the I/Q mode setting.
Many of us use it this way.
In fact sometimes we forget to turn off I/Q mode for digi mode operations, because we hear the audio fine through the earphone port.
