Further poking showed that it was very slight pressure from the Ear & Mic/paddle jacks as they exited the front panel which was causing a disconnect in one or more of the header pins for the front panel. Will use a tapered reamer later, to open up the clearances.
All good now - CQ'd on 10 / ft8 ? Got a rely from SP6ZJP - in Poland within 3 minutes. ?from Sandy Hook CT - home made 1/4 vertical and I'm down on a valley!
