The power pins of the QMX+ USB connector are not connected to anything in the QMX+ design, so they should not be pulling any power at all from your Mac mini, so you may have a short somewhere in your assembly, or perhaps a bad USB cable.

I recommend that you check carefully for accidental solder splashes or bridges near the USB connector on the QMX+, or anywhere in that vicinity.
