On RX and test without transmit it does not matter is it 12 or 9 version?
Attach it to regulated power supply set voltage to 10v and current around 300mA.
Do not use battery for first start, if anything goes wrong you want current limited power supply.

Is cable data capable?
After you hook up qmx to pc open terminal on linux and type sudo dmesg it will show output and on bottom of the line there should be QMX mentioned.
If that is not the case change cable to shortest one you can find or better quality.
