That's something I hadn't considered... I ran through the test on the 818 again without the preamp (by enabling the IPO setting), the S1/-121dBm signal is still clearly audible on all bands 20-10m but it's closer to the noise floor as one would expect, and closer to how the QMX performs (except on 10m, where QMX is still performing worse than the other bands).
