Thankyou Evan for putting me onto the right track.
So below is the picture of the windings as I made them originally.
(I saw a picture of them a bit like that in the manual? page 37, so made them quite tight...)
And below here is the picture of the windings after following AC9TU Evan's suggestion.

I am sure if I kept tweaking, I could improve further, but it will be fine for now.
(There is probably a more scientific way to understand what to adjust)
