This may have something to do with the SWR protection mode.? (Someone correct me if wrong...) When enabled, SWR more than a specified amount (default 3:1) will shut off RF transmission, but you'll still have a sidetone and keying.
You might want to try with a dummy load, and enable the Power/SWR meter function on the display.
