I think a good showcase would be if you used an ATU at the BNC output connected to a various loads - antennas.
ATUs namely seek for a good match by using an L-shaped network consisting of L and C or C and L.
I think that rapidly changing the Ls, Cs and the LC or CL config could be worse (twice) than a "simple" short or open.
