The connector is the other way round, a
2.1mm centre pin on the QMX and a 2.5mm male socket on the plug.?
I've seen this a lot on other things and the equipment gets an
undeserved reputation for unreliability.

Good catch. In practise, the slightly larger connector makes it
ever-so-slightly more snug, not less so. Also, Hans' tests
indicate that an intermittent 0-12v connections is okay. A 5v-12v
jump is the killer.
