Status Update:? I tried everything I could think of to get the display working but got nowhere.
I finished the second QMX kit and all seemed to be working as expected. Swapping display boards between the two units pretty much proved that the display board was the problem. But What ???? There's really very little on the board.
I finally gave up fiddling with it and sent it to Jeff Moore, W1NC,
/g/QRPLabs/message/104292Jeff was very easy to work with and the communications was good. He reported that he found:
"On the display there were three cut PC traces on the display board. ?Looked like an exact knife slipped there. ?I also found the LCD display itself was not seated well against the elastometer connectors underneath. ?One tab was not bent over correctly. I removed the display, cleaned the elastometer connectors, the gold fingers and reinstalled. ?Also, the 4 pin connector was super loose to. The main board. ?I put a slight twist in the pins. ?I reinstalled and all seems ok so far. ?If you have further problems with the backlight, it is the 4 pin connector.
Without any real solid proof I feel the main problems with the display board came that way out of the box. I'm especially confused about the cut PC traces. There's certainly no need to get close to it with an exacto knife - just a soldering iron and wire cutters.
Anyway, I am happy to report that working with Jeff has been a good experience and I highly recommend calling on him when you get stuck.
