VK4 SILENT KEYS @ JULY 2020- MAY 2021 WIA YEAR

SK CALL SK NAME ADVISED BY

ex-VK4KJO Joachim Ostrenski (Joe Ski) 9/9/20 (vk4zz)

VK4CNP Norm Philips 20/10/20 (vk4bat)

ex-VK4FPJT Paul J Turner 22/10/20 (vk4bb)

Silent Key - Norm Philips VK4CNP

Many people in the Gympie Region and others around the world
were saddened by the sudden passing of Norm Philips VK4CNP
on Tuesday, 20 October 2020.

Norm, was born on the 26th of July 1920 at Clematis St Gympie.
Eight days after he was born his mother passed away from
septicaemia and he was brought up by Midwife Isabella Veal
while his father who was a monoline operator at the Gympie
Times moved to Brisbane to work at the Brisbane Telegraph.

Norms main interest as a young boy was scouting and his first
job was as a message boy for a local chemist. On 12 May 1937
Norm started work for the Gympie Times, 5 years later he
joined the AIF and on 26 September 1941, he left Gympie for
Redbank and this was the beginning of his Army service.

All his life Norm had been interested in radio and ever since
he was a boy of fourteen when he made his first crystal radio
set, he had wanted to be a Signaller. When in the Scouts he
had learned Morse code, Semaphore and use of the Aldis lamp,
consequently he applied to the Signal Training School.

His time in the Army was traumatic as he was nearly killed
near the town of Bulolo (Papua New Guinea) when one of two
Japanese Mitsubishi medium bombers flying towards him dropped
a bomb that exploded near him in a blinding flash. Between a
week to a fortnight after the explosion Norm was admitted to
Bulolo Hospital with Malaria, pain behind the eyes and
blurring vision.

Norm returned to Australia on the ship SS Taroona and after
the war he returned to the Gympie Times and was married to
Jean Lang on 29 June 1945.

Later on in life as Norm enjoyed his regular game of golf, he
noticed that the ball became a blur and he had to give his
golf away, then a friend Alan Booth VK4EAB (SK) from Kybong
who was also suffering low vision took up the radio and got a
amateur radio licence, he said to Norm, ¡°If I can get it,
you can get it too¡±. So, Norm went and applied for his radio
licence and because of his technical certificate he was
exempted from the theory section and consequently received
his AOCP licence (unlimited).

Norm became interested in nets and became a member of the
World-Wide Peace Net which was started by KL7AM Bob Hisamoto
(SK) who was born in the USA in 1908. Bob was well known
throughout the amateur world as the founder of the Japanese
Amateur Radio League in 1925. Bob promoted peace, not war,
one world, one people as the main net control station and
appointed Norm as the net controller for Australia.

Other nets that Norm took part in were the Disabled Persons
Net of Queensland and the Coral Coast Net which has been
running since 1967. Norm who was long term member of the
Wireless Institute of Australia recently reached the
milestone of turning 100 years of age and was able to
catch up with members of the Gympie Communication &
Electronics Group Inc of which Norm was a valued member.

Norm was also very dedicated to his community and was
appointed as a Civil Marriage Celebrant by Attorney General
Senator Lionel Murphy on 29 January 1975. Norm carried out
this important work for 17 years, performing his last wedding
on the 14 September 1991. During his time as a Marriage
Celebrant, Norm performed 675 weddings, involving a total of
1350 people.

In the final pages of Norm¡¯s book (My highway of life) he
said the following: I guess one could say a person¡¯s life is
mapped out for them. Some people like to live the life of a
recluse doing nothing, other people like to be helpful,
to look upon the duty to fellow man by exercising goodwill
by example.

Vale Norm Philips VK4CNP

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

Well we have had an interesting week and the middle was the
broadcast media coverage of the US presidential election.
From what I saw, there is an increasing integration of the
video streaming services that the Covid-19 pandemic has
brought to amateur radio clubs and elsewhere. Yes we have had
the technology around for many years but the newer services
seem to have matured the technology for home users and
businesses as well as broadcast news.

I am old enough to remember the thrill of going to the local
picture show and seeing events of few days before screened on
the news reels. Overseas items appeared usually in under
3 weeks. The immediate news services were the printed
newspapers and broadcast radio. As television became part of
the daily routine, we became used to seeing local events on
the nightly news service and more distant items probably the
day after.

It is fascinating to admire the amazing growth and integration
of technology that we take for granted. When TV came in
monotone or black and white, it would have been unrealistic
to think of real time news events streamed to a screen that
can be carried in a pocket. When TV was in development some
90 to 100 years ago, it would be unimaginable that it would
be a universal service via a telephone like service provided
by the internet.

Just to prove that the evolution continues, I heard in this
weeks WIA National News that the NASA dish located outside of
Canberra has been undergoing an upgrade. Known as Deep Space
Station 43, or DSS43 this 70 metre diameter dish has
successfully sent a command to the Voyager 2 spacecraft which
was some 18,750 million kilometres from Earth and travelling
at around 60,000Km/hr. Voyager 2 was launched on 20th August
1977 and is just 17 light hours from Earth. Imagine the
stress of waiting for the confirmation signal had been
received after 8 months of radio silence?

For those whose bench space is at a premium and who use a
shack computer, this past week saw the release of the
Raspberry Pi 400. In a neat package, the keyboard houses the
now familiar computer with the rear panel housing the usual
ports including the GPIO pins. All you need is your own mouse
and monitor to get started. If you are wanting to delve into
Linux here is you opportunity. At this stage, I am unaware of
the Australian pricing but a figure of $70-00 US has been
bandied around.

Although the lock down has slowed many industries, we are
still seeing new products hitting the market with Yaesu the
latest in this year¡¯s line up.

More excitement occurring with openings happening on the
higher HF bands and people heralding the start of Solar Cycle
25. With only weeks to the Christmas season, I suspect a lot
more social distancing will still be practiced on the
multitude of modes available to we amateurs.

Keep cool this weekend and keep safe in the summer season of
natural surprises.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think¡.how about you?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

Well the summer storms have caught up in my area although,
apart from the rain and a bit of thunder and lightening, the
worst outcome has been the blackouts. Obviously, we live in
an area where the supply feeder gets switched off from some
distance away. My preparedness has been caught out as the UPS
which keeps the internet running in the house seems to have
lost its heart and died. A new battery seems to be on the
shopping list as I sit in torch light typing and waiting for
the blackout to end.

Now this is an inconvenience, the worst part of which is no
home telephone. I use a medical device and the electricity
supplier calls when there is an outage to advise the status.
No power to the modem means no NBN and no home phone number
during blackouts until the UPS is fixed. This is a decided
down side to the whole saga of high speed internet designed
by engineers and fooled with by politicians.

Obviously there are many amongst our ranks who have reached
a stage in life where they require the assistance of powered
medical aids and many more who depend on security pendants
for assistance. As technology in this area changes we have to
ensure that there is compatibility of the various systems on
which people depend. Safety pendants no longer interface with
a home phone but depend on 4G connections. My manual advice
system depends on a working phone line and when the UPS goes
belly up, so do my safety calls.

We as amateurs often have to interface pieces of equipment or
integrate or reconfigure firmware and software. It is
something we take in our stride as part of our hobby. At times
I wonder if the professional side of electronics takes the
least cost option rather than the most effective service
model as their prime consideration.

As the weather bureau has informed us that the current
systems causing the storms is part of the la Nina pattern,
how many of us are taking this as a wake up call? We have
seen cars crushed under falling trees, people stranded on top
of cars caught in the torrents of flash flooding and streets
where the road surface has been totally submerged. This is
but the start of the wet season and the signs are pretty
obvious that we are living in interesting times. Hopefully,
for most of us this is no more than an inconvenience and our
families and belongings are keeping safe. For me, well I know
that I have one repair or replacement to take care of and yes
the power has returned and the battery in the laptop is
recharging and the audio gear is all working.

So let us all keep safe and make the best of what nature
offers, rain, wind or sunspot numbers on the rise.

I¡¯m VK4ZPP Geoff Emery and that¡¯s what I think¡.how about you?

For a full list of repeaters - vk4wip.org.au

It¡¯s been a busy time recently for members of Ipswich and
District Radio Club.

After the long Covid-induced break and regular Zoom meetings,
face to face meetings resumed at the clubhouse this month
operating under the relevant Covid-safe guidelines.

On October 5, digital/DMR meetings recommenced with 12 members
keen to get together. Social meetings are also back with
15 members making up attendance to hear a talk from
Greg VK4GJW. This was held on October 12.

JOTA and JOTI was successfully run on October 17 at the club.
Ten Jindalee Venturers took part with guidance from
Eric VK4BBK. The event was also supported by Bob VK4RJ,
Don VK4KO, Peter VK4SIR, Kevin VK4KK and Greg VK4GJW.
Contacts were made on HF, VHF, DMR and via two laptops.
Feedback from those who took part was excellent with some
prospective Foundation candidates among them. The day ended
with a fine dining menu of pizza, cake and ice-cream.

Don¡¯t forget, amateur radio has been practicing social
distancing for over 100 years.

Reporting from Ipswich this is Allan, VK4HIT.

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

It seems the first of the summer storms is trying to lead us
into the forecast La Nina. The sky has greyed the days and
the static crashes on 40 metres signal the freedom to use HF
easily is coming to an end. The sky gazers are telling of
some interesting solar activity whilst grey line contacts
seem to be more interesting, if not more consistent.

The world of radio exploration is not unlike the exploration
of the world by sea. We know the basic activities that we may
encounter but the variations and mutations on that template
are as remarkable as they are challenging. When we join the
enthusiasts who attempt to master the craft of amateur radio,
we become like the star gazer, enraptured with the beauty of
our natural world. Unlike the astronomer viewing the points
of light, our initial experiments are with the unseen, what
our forebears called the aether.

It is what we do as the time goes by that will show how our
interests have developed and our understanding has expanded.
That first tentative contact after getting our licence may
lead us into various routes and blind alleys. All the while,
the framework of our hobby depends on the invisible but almost
magic interaction between natural forces, of climate,
temperature and humidity. Whilst some will spend their time
examining the mathematics which models the physics, most of
us will be trialling parts of our station equipment, our
location, power and modes of communications.

Our searching can take us into areas which we may not have
otherwise tried. The computer type may apply the skills and
training but they might also trying building things, delving
into mechanics and the differences in scale and metals might
make. The musical mind might find itself in love with the
rhythm of the old sounds of Morse Code and others might, for
the first time, try coding and engineering some projects.
That shy person at work can be the garrulous life of a fat
chewing QSO when they get home and behind a microphone.

For the car owner, amateur radio can offer interesting
challenges with modern design of cabins making the mounting
of after market accessories, let alone radio gear, a challenge
for even the graduate of a Mensa membership. The rewards of
being able to enjoy one¡¯s hobby whilst commuting are
inestimable. This leads to the apps that are available for
use on our phones when data linking combines with the
wireless network that we call amateur radio. There are those
sorts who feel that data linking via the internet or private
networks, isn¡¯t real amateur radio. Go back to the ¡®90¡¯s and
the packet radio system was using satellite and HF relays as
well as worm holes into the reasonably new internet.

Look at commercial and military communications systems and
you see a level of mixing and matching of technology which is
usually far in excess of the most sophisticated amateur
network. It is the idea that you use and integrate things to
achieve the reliability and system coverage that you require.
Look at broadcasting and streaming services which have a
product to get to the customer base; it doesn¡¯t matter if the
data linking is via wireless or fibre optics, the result is
the same, the entertainment is delivered to the person who
wants it.

Similarly, we amateur enthusiasts can and indeed, should try
out these various systems or operating modes as part of the
self education that defines us under the ITU definition.
Whether we have people pumping RF into the soil on long waves
or others operating outside the defined limit of radio and
communicating with lasers, we are sharing knowledge and
experience which benefits us individually and the community
as well. It is interesting to note that the satellite
internet providers seeking to provide global coverage are
also experimenting with lasers to network the satellites
themselves.

It is so true that with this recreational pursuit, the sky
was the limit but no more.

I¡¯m VK4ZPP Geoff Emery and ---
that¡¯s what I think¡.how about you?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

In the world today, we have many young people using technology
which we of the older generations probably never thought of
as other than a fantasy. For these people, the aura of the
warm glowing radio valves is unknown, unless they are lucky
enough to be introduced to them. But for these young people,
is there the mystique, the magic and allure that once enticed
their grandparents?

If we remember, as adults, what the younger, growing years
are like, they are the time of boundless curiosity and trying
to find our personal place, our niche in the world and
acceptance of our peers. Fortunately, the processes of growing
up do not radically change but the atmosphere, the surroundings
in which this happens does meld and morph as technology
produces more instruments of entertainment in ever smaller
packages. It is a fact that when we enjoy a pursuit, we like
to encourage others to join us in it. Sometimes the years that
have passed do not seem to allow young and parental type
adults to pick up and entice each other into what they feel
are important and esoteric activities. The language of the
peer groups can be a protection for the youth seeking privacy
from parental intrusion and the seeming formality of the older
people can seem a deterrent to the younger. Should these be
irreconcilable?

We need to understand more of what is enthralling to the
generation of the internet and the mobile devices. For the
technologically savvy young person, there should be a welcome
entry into a technological pursuit such as amateur radio. The
different developments which span such a universe of
knowledge in science and technology can engross the mind that
is exploring and learning, assimilating what the world has to
offer.

From satellites and the associated astrophysics and astronomy
to the subterranean pursuits of long wave ground propagation
with the earth sciences and electronic technology the
engagement of amateur radio goes and spreads. We can take our
devices and engage them with other articles and develop
skills in coding and searching out minute pieces of
information. We can talk around the globe with and without
using the internet and we can bounce signals back to earth
from the Moon.
There is so much more that goes with amateur radio such as
friendships that last and last and we may never get to meet
in person. And if we do travel, there are friendly faces who
will welcome us along the way because of this hobby. We can
be makers and developers or just the relaxed hobbiest; we can
be students and use the knowledge from our hobby to become a
professional. We can take part in safety networks and we can
exercise in radio sport, hone our operating skills in
contesting or challenge ourselves to gain certificates and
awards.

With all this at our finger tips, how do we get that person
with the sparkle in the eye to become a participant? How do
we reach out the hand of friendship and tell someone how
great we find this pursuit? How do you who is interested in
science and technology get to meet with us, find a mentor and
get to enjoy the same glow of satisfaction of the hundreds
and thousands of radio amateurs around the world.

Today the world may seem more closed down than it should be
because of the epidemic restrictions. Today radio amateurs
are communicating in so many ways free of those restrictions
because we use the same radio waves that bring the internet
and our family and friends voices to our mobile phones.Today
radio amateurs are relaxing and chatting, challenging
themselves with new skills and today you can join with us too.

We just need to find the words to ask the questions.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery and that¡¯s what I think¡.how about you?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

?

There seems to be a divide in the community amongst those who regard themselves as

community members and another group who find their own situation unsatisfactory and

wish to blame the older generation for their problems. It seems to be be a

conclusion drawn on flawed reasoning because we live in a country which is a

representative democracy. This means that the elected representatives have made and

continue to make decisions which frame how the country works and not us, not the

old, not the middle aged and not the recently enfranchised. We all have to live with

the results of our parliamentary system and we are free to enjoy the sport of

blaming the government, blaming the politicians and free to decide whom we vote for

at the next election.

?

Enough of the civics, what concerns me is the false divide that some see in this

hobby. I say false because the intent of amateur radio is to be inclusive regardless

of those subjects we don¡¯t discuss in polite circles. Now, religion, sex and

politics aside, ageism seems to be creeping into our hobby so I think it fair to try

and tease out some thoughts. There is room for all sorts of interest groups within

the ham radio family with amateurs belonging to other bodies gathering and

organising to use this medium to enhance the other. For instance, if we need one,

there is Rotarians on the Air.

?

There are special interest groups on the net and on social media such as Facebook.

You can be any age and enjoy a particular make or model of radio or you can be

enthralled with building antennas or amplifiers and, of course, this is the way it

should be in the spirit of amateur radio. We can appreciate that the membership of

radio scouting groups covers a certain demographic, normally. Similarly the Radio

Old Timers Groups around the world require member to have been licenced for normally

25 years. You can argue that it is possible to be in your early thirties and be a

radio old timer.

?

Now the nub of what I am getting at is that we have a generational shift in

attitudes in the community and within our hobby we have a preponderance of those of

not now tender years. Having said that, we have young people entering the hobby with

experiences different from those who grew up in the post World War II era of

plentiful disposals equipment and different from the citizens band heyday. The memes

we see on social media are testament to this with rotary dial telephones featuring

as tools of mystery for our younger colleagues.

?

People who re born to the tablet and smart phone generation may struggle to

appreciate the beauty of a 25 year radio let alone the Morse Key and electron tubes

(valves). However , when we mentor these younger people (and by that I would include

most people under 40) it is common courtesy to try and understand their perspective

and knowledge of electronic communications. Then having aided someone to gain a

licence, we should continue the association. It is a friendship building exercise

meeting and enjoying AR together.

?

If people wish to form groups to share their various streams of interest that is

fine but limiting membership by age alone and then not participating with the wider

community is a path to insularity. We are radio amateurs and we are inclusive

regardless of those things like gender, religion, political persuasion and age. We

are are broad, encompassing community who strive to leave difference away from our

hobby.

?

I¡¯m Geoff Emery and that¡¯s what I think¡.how about you?

?

?

?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

?

As more and more people put their minds to coding apps for

this hobby of amateur radio, the hobby is losing some of the

mystique that was once called crystal ball gazing. With

tremendous amounts of data being available the meteorologists

and the space weather scientists are able to predict not only

whether it is likely to be raining but also what the possible

operating conditions should be.

?

Behind us are the days when forecasting the weather meant

sticking your head out a window to feel the breeze and feel

if your face got wet. In more open spaces the old trick of

wetting a finger and rotating it told you which direction the

wind was from and depending on how quickly your finger dried,

how strong it was. Well some of these techniques were

somewhat apocryphal but you get the idea that planning for

outside events was very much a stab in the dark, in most

instances. The rules of thumb were a guide, like the Brisbane

Exhibition, the Ekka, always brings the strong westerly winds.

Now we have access to up to date data on sites such as the

Bureau of Meteorology and reports to dedicated sites for the

ham community.

?

Talking of community, I had an experience, just recently,

which was a good reminder of the fellowship that comes with

the membership of amateur radio enthusiasts. I was completing

on purchase at a local business and in taking my details the

person serving me realised he knew the name and then the

callsign which I use in my email address. This led to a

friendly conversation on, would you believe, amateur radio,

and our experiences and hopes for the hobby and all the

topics that seem to spring up when we meet another ham.

?

I have mentioned the traditions, the history and the

camaraderie that is the spirit of amateur radio and here was

another instance of this living out in practice. It is so

wrong that there exist the misanthropes that try and spoil

the enjoyment of the majority and the trolls who haven't

matured enough to stop painting dirty words on the toilet

walls at school. Admittedly some have progressed far enough

to give us the benefits of their immaturity by using the

words on social media and some can even spell them correctly!

?

We amateurs have a history of welcoming all interested people

into our throng and respect for our fellows is part of the

practice we should all attempt to follow.

?

Well things have moved along with the formal announcement of

Sun Spot Cycle 25 but now our Met Bureau has formally

announced a la Nina weather pattern for the Pacific Regions.

We are being told that we should expect more wet days,

possibly more cyclones but not to expect the dramatic weather

that brought us flooding almost a decade ago. There is a

certain confluence which may bring and sustain better

operating conditions, particularly for HF but there should

also be the caution to prepare for the unexpected. The bush

fire season is upon us and the fire authorities are saying

not to expect the la Nina to lessen their incidence. The

cyclone season is coming and by the ferocity of the storm

systems that have recently battered the northern hemisphere

we should take those as a warning and clean up and batten

down where necessary.

?

With JOTA/JOTI coming up shortly we should take a leaf from

Scouting and Be Prepared.

?

I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think¡.how about you?

VK4 SILENT KEYS @ JULY 2020- MAY 2021 WIA YEAR

SK CALL SK NAME ADVISED BY

ex-VK4KJO Joachim Friedrich Ostrenski (Joe Ski) 9/920 (vk4zz)

---------------------------------------------------------------------*

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

In preparing for the summer season, I have managed to erect my
previously used HF antenna on some fibreglass poles. The height
is barely above the surrounding building gables and it also
crosses over a metal awning and a metal clothes hoist,
both of which lower the effective height above ground.
This is of course, the constant challenge of radio amateurs
living in suburbia and on smaller blocks designed to increase
the housing density.

Where we live has been settled for a few years and seems to have
a largely older age group of residents. Now the reason I mention
the relative age of the locality is that in this part of Queensland
there is quite a high uptake of roof top solar photo-voltaics.
This brings me to the point of the story and that is I have been
trying to familiarise myself with a genuine 50 year plus, all valve
transceiver. Like all these beasts, you turn them on and walk away
until the valves are properly warmed and the electro-mechanical
components have reached a stable temperature, then you tune it,
as they used to say, for maximum smoke. Of course, we really don¡¯t
want the magic smoke to leave parts of our gear because they then
no longer work properly or at all.

Now the issue is that on my re-erected antenna, I am receiving some
signals but I am being plastered by electromagnetic smog. At the
moment I haven't been able to identify discrete sources in the
neighbourhood. Visually, I know there are plenty of PV installations,
but the other items which might be involved are yet to be discovered.
Needless to say, when the S-meter rises to a 40dB over 9 level on
switch on, reading the mail on HF is really off the menu, to mix
metaphors.

I have been fortunate in other locations not to have been inundated
with EMC issues and it brings home the sad and sorry lack of
regulation that has afflicted users of the radio spectrum have
incurred by deregulation. Let me explain. Back when the CB explosion
was getting aluminium in the air, the then predecessor of the ACMA
endeavoured to prevent the sale of 40 channel 11 meter radios.
The Department of Trade fought back and some of the importers and
vendors managed to get the issue into court. It was held that it
would be a restraint of trade if the imports were banned and that
selling them was alright too. The illegality only happened when the
devices were connected for use. The dollar won that round at the
expense of effective regulatory process.

Since then we have had consumer goods marketed without suppression
components, after approval was granted. Plasma TV¡¯s of course were
legal as were early switch mode computer power supplies. Now we have
led lighting, solar PV and linear wall power adaptors are banned,
replaced with dirty switching supplies all too often.

It is indicative that the inmates have taken over the asylum, when
the US Coastguard recommends vessels turn off the led lighting to
make satisfactory use of the two way radio system.

The aviation industry is concerned at the level RF crud that emanates
from ground sources and our regulators have the least numbers of
field staff following up compliance that have been employed, probably
in the last 75 years.

If you think this is wrong well so do I.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP.

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

I bet most of us have seen the banner headlines in the press and the
amateur radio
news sources.
It is time to break out the DX spray and shine the antennas and make sure
there is
an adequate supply of electrons in the PC to lodge the eQSLs and logs. Sun
Spot
Cycle 25 has been officially announced this week past. For those who have
never
operated during times of increasing sunspot numbers, the next few years
should
provide a feast of interesting operations on the HF bands. Bands which
currently
appear dead to voice and CW will open up and regular skeds will be possible.

Many people have just been able to access digital modes and they are
finding the
enhanced sensitivity is giving them DX that they haven't been able to
otherwise
attain. Not only will the weak signal modes come to life like most have never
experienced but the old fashioned practice of using microphones will
become popular
once more. That is when we can enjoy periods of almost uninterrupted good
conditions. I look forward to the next 4 to 5 years.

Now to something else. I have mentioned how pleased I was to see the WIA
release the
Trial Foundation Test generator. Part of this was that some years ago I
stuck my
nose into books on adult education and learning. What a deep subject this
is and to
demonstrate, I would suggest people look up a reasonable library catalogue
and see
the extraordinary number of published books and articles that you can
access. All
too often people get treated as if they were product dropped off the end of a
production line, the sausage machine analogy applies here. As educators
have learned
more about teaching, schools have had to adapt the teaching to suit the
younger
learners and in the adult learning field, there are several types of
learners to be
accommodated.

With this in mind, the various resources that we have had for people
wanting to
master the theoretical aspect of amateur radio and electronics have
addressed the
certain number of learners who are adept in ¡°book¡± learning and classroom
instruction from the previous WIA training. This scheme has been shifted
somewhat
with the AMC taking a different approach.

What the trial examination does is provide a method of people testing their
knowledge and understanding of the subject matter in their own home and at
their own
time. There is no question bank available to simply try and memorise the
questions
and answers and as the app rewrites the papers for each attempt, it isn¡¯t
likely
many people would remember the questions precisely. Anyway, there is ample
precedent
as when I first wanted to sit the test, the old papers were available
at no charge from the local Radio Inspector¡¯s Office. Later there we

I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think¡.how about you?

VK4 SILENT KEYS @ JULY 2020- MAY 2021 WIA YEAR

SK CALL SK NAME ADVISED BY

VK4KJO (ex callsign) Joachim Friedrich Ostrenski (Joe Ski) (vk4zz)

Wednesday September 9 Joe passed peacefully in the Townsville
University Hospital Palliative Care Ward

Joe grew up in Germany during World War 2, eventually emigrated to
South Australia but in the 1950s moved to the Burdekin establishing
a farming business. He helped to establish the Burdekin Rice Mill
in the 60s, then moved to Townsville establishing a marine retail
business.

He eventually sold that business, took to the sea a bit in his home
built 15 metre catamaran. During his time at sea he made many
contacts in Indonesia and for as long as he was able to, got
involved with aid projects in that archipelago.

1980's saw Joe establish the famous Joe Ski Computer Shop in
Ingham Road which he ran until he retired in 1993.

Joe was a former Treasurer and Librarian for The Townsville Amateur
Radio Club Inc. and was active as long as he could be in Amateur
Radio. When old age dimmed vision and muffled hearing Radio Joe
switched to digital mode monitoring.

We are all going to miss his dynamic attitude to life and the
experience he was able to bring to bear to solve problems.

Vale Joe Ski ex-VK4KJO, Silent Key

Still at sea a belated message in concerns the passing of VK4FHOY

Cap'n Dan Van Blarcom VK4FHOY originally from Canada.

Cap'n Dan fell in love with Australia in 1967 while serving onboard
merchant vessels as Ships Electrician and swallowed the anchor in
Brisbane.

Work took him a number of places until he settled down a bit in the
Whitsundays.

Cap'n Dan was a correspondent on matters maritime for ABC Tropical
North Mackay, lived for a long time in Airlie Beach and amongst his
many accomplishments ran for State Parliament for the seat of
Whitsundays three times, ran for local council a number of times, was
a registered trainer, a qualified Ships Master, a writer and online
journalist, served on the Whitsunday Local Marine Advisory Committee,
had a hand in organising many Whitsunday events and did volunteer
work with the Airlie Beach Naval Cadets, co-founded the Whitsundays
Blessing of the Fleet event and was a staunch supporter for
International "Talk Like a Pirate Day."

He established what eventually became his main residence in
Collinsville and up to his passing ran a security business there.
For years he tried to get his Ham ticket but got too busy with other
things however finally in November 2018 he was able to find some time
in the schedule while visiting Townsville to successfully sit the
Foundation Assessment and attained callsign

VK4FHOY - to reflect his nautical background.

After several attempts he looked like he was able to finally retire
and get the HF transceiver on the air, however health issues finally
got him and he passed away in Mackay Hospital around August 8th 2020
aged 69 years.

Cap'n Dan was a member of The Townsville Amateur Radio Club Inc. and
a large number of community groups in the Whitsundays.

Vale Cap'n Dan Van Blarcom VK4FHOY, Silent Key.

---------------------------------------------------------------------*
Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

I try to fathom what is the one thing that has kept me interested in
things such as
clubs as much as this hobby. I remember my high school days when I was
finding a
thrill in stagecraft and acting. I got to take part in some school plays
and also
taken into the fold of the local dramatic society. Yes I was interested
and curious
about these things but there was a reason the nerves were overcome. It
was the
interest and encouragement from my teachers and the members of the acting
troupe.

As I developed more interest in radio and had spent long hours sitting by
the family
console radio which had shortwave, it was the interest and encouragement
of the
amateurs that took me under their wing and the local repair men who
offered me the
broken chassis that customers no longer wanted, to use for parts.

I remember these times with gratitude and fondness from a youth and young
adult
being encouraged to find the enjoyment, you might say love, of the art
and science
we now call radio.

So I think we have a bit of this nostalgia left in us and can we share it
and
encourage the curious and interested in joining us on a journey of
lifelong learning
and friendship?

Does the club that you are a member of encourage new people to join in
and does it
go out of its way to make them not only feel welcome on the first visit
but welcome
enough to come back?

I believe it is the encouragement and support that we give to others that
makes our
hobby grow. Some service clubs have successful formulas to introduce and
sustain
membership. Our radio, electronics and maker type clubs, from the
outside, appear to
attract and hold the same sort of peer group without expanding the
horizon to see
opportunities waiting to the sides. I spoke of my introduction to this
back when
electron tubes reigned and perhaps many will relate to the years of CB as
their
early memories.

Today we have a new generation of people who haven¡¯t lived with rotary dial
telephones, black and white televisions and without the internet. We need
to lift
our sights to the current stream of electronics and use of integrated
radio and
linking systems. We need to start thinking of what people are enjoying
and using and
how these things relate to us and our hobby. We need to do what most
generations
have not really been able to do well and that is accept and relate to
young people
and the youth culture of today.

So of course, the more diverse is our club membership in experience, the
better able
to find someone who can be the mentor to another person who looks around the
clubhouse door. It is just a matter of doing what the radio amateur has
done for
over a hundred years and that is encourage people to enjoy the journey
that a level
of electronics provides. We just need to be sincere in what we say and do
in dealing
with our friends and amateur radio creates so many close and worthwhile
friendships.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think¡.how about you?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

The days are starting the metamorphosis that brings the thriving
spring out of the dormant Winter with tinges of fog in the mornings
and clear skies at night. It is the start of the outdoor seasons for
many with the water and the roads attracting people. Even in the
middle of the travel restrictions, the highway is carrying lots of
traffic as people escape the thought of restriction and seek the
pleasures of a land of curiosity and wonder.

The main thing to note is the travellers that we are seeing along the
east coast of Queensland are inevitably also Queenslanders seeking to
enjoy the tourist and grey nomad tracks and stopovers. For we stay at
home types, it has been feeling that pulse of interest to put
equipment to use, to check over the necessary bits such as feedlines
and masts and prepare for the coming months of interesting openings
and hopefully a more demonstrable Cycle 25 procession of sunspots and
indices.

There has been quite an interest being shown in the Foundation
Licence trial examinations posted on the web site of the Wireless
Institute of Australia.

wia.org.au/licenses/foundation/onlineexams/foundation.php

It will be a good initiative, if in the future, we see such excellent
learning material for the other licence grades made available too.
Perhaps they could be open to people who sign up for a 6 month free
trial membership of the Institute allowing these associate members to
access the online benefits. Perhaps the Institute could even consider
and implement a lower cost associate membership on a permanent basis.
This could be available to SWLs as in the days of long ago and any
people who didn¡¯t want a voting membership but who wished to support
the hobby in a practical way.

Each year, as we come into Spring I usually issue a caution to people
to do the proverbial spring clean and maintenance of their stations.
It is in this time that we have, in this part of the world, to
prepare for the summer storm and cyclone seasons. With the
possibility of heavy monsoon rains in the far North and the threat of
hurricane weather, such as our northern hemisphere neighbours have
been experiencing, reduction of material that can be dangerous under
adverse weather conditions is a job that must be undertaken. Making
sure that our fixed installations are up to the rigours and ensuring
that our portable and mobile stations are prepared should be on the
routine maintenance list.

If we hear that the crocodiles are nesting early, this year, we will
know that the north is in for a good wet season. Weather watchers to
our north are seeing signs that the sea temperatures are already
indicating a possible increase in cyclones for this season. So, my
friends, I urge you to go over the necessary house keeping for a safe
and enjoyable summer season of ham radio.

And just a thought, clubs might be able to look around their area and
consider offering to assist amateurs who are infirm with this task.
It would be a good reason for an eyeball and a yarn as well as
sharing the amateur spirit.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think¡.how about you?

VK4 SILENT KEYS @ JULY 2020- MAY 2021 WIA YEAR

SK CALL SK NAME ADVISED BY

---------------------------------------------------------------------*

---------------------------------------------------------------------*
Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

One of the most important items for a body to have is way of sparking
interest amongst the mildly curious. The side show spruiker has a job
to catch the passing trade and the paper and magazine have covers
aimed at grabbing attention. The YouTube video gets your interest by
the strangely caricaturish thumbnail.

So what are the things that will grab the attention of the passerby
and make them take the tentative steps to ask a question? We are
talking of amateur radio and the plethora of different facets that
display this hobby. I have my particular interests and you all have
yours but what is the one thing that you can share that will start a
conversation?

A few years back there was an expression in common currency that said
in considering important issue that we should think globally and act
locally. To this end, we can consider what it is needed to bring more
interest in ham radio to the wider populace. Should we have a
continuing program of advertising, showing the fun, the challenges
and the benefits to us as individuals and our locality? What has
grabbed your attention from national bodies such as RSGB and ARRL in
the membership campaigns that they have run? There is nothing to be
ashamed of in using good ideas to spark our own thinking.

Now if we admit that we could be doing more to attract people to the
hobby, Australia wide, the next thing is just what can we do locally?
Well this is where I toss things over to you. You are the people who
are familiar with your own community; who know whether it is a rich
mixture of young and old and all those in between. Locally, we have a
sense of what is happening and whether the school community is
strong, the community organisations are working well and so on and so
forth. We shouldn¡¯t discount the value of local knowledge and we
should use it, where we can.

Having got our heads around what our area is like, then we can move
on to what is going to work where we live. It is no point trying to
place a static display in the local electronics store if it closed
down several years ago. Would spot announcements in the community
notice board on the local TV and radio station work? Would organising
a chat with the local newspaper work? Whoops, most print ones have
gone online in the regions!

Would a gift to the local library and the offer of of some brochures
attract readers and so on and so forth is the way to brain storm
these suggestions, locally.

There are more methods but then we are in the midst of health
situation and that can be a good reason to think of helping people
stay mentally alert during the restrictions.

We can¡¯t really palm the answers off to someone else, it is our
recreation and even those who have been enjoying it the longest can
remember what got them started. All we need now is to find the
manner which will help others get started too.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think¡.how about you?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

At times the convenience of the modern PC is an annoyance when it develop
a problem
which can¡¯t be simply overcome. So it was for me, recently, when I
suffered from the
dreaded Windows 10 issue that I had read about. I thought that by
authorising the
update that had arrived and walking away for the process to go ahead
whilst I went
on with other things, everything would be alright.
Well that didn¡¯t quite work out.

All seemed well however when I fired up the following morning, there was an
interesting issue. The WiFi connection to the home network was lost.
Nothing that I
tried would resolve the issue and with no alternative, I had to reset the
operating
system. That resolved the WiFi issue but in doing so it removed a number
of pieces
of software that I use and with it the saved copies of material. The
software is
reloaded and the computer is running as it should be. It now looks like I
had best
employ an outboard storage device because when you can¡¯t just restore to a
previous
date you can¡¯t pick up where you left off.

There is some nice news coming from the sky watchers and particularly
those who
monitor the activity on the surface of the sun. More evidence of the
awakening of
Solar Cycle 25 is happening with holes, flares and storms creating a bit of
excitement for the users of HF radio, in particular. As much as some
people are
frustrated with band conditions and particularly the electric hash that
modern
technology is radiating, there is hope that DX with low power on shortwave
will
become a reality for the analogue modes, again. The results that many
operators are
achieving with QRP digital would seem unbelievable to those with only
voice mode
experience.

So I have to wonder what reactions you have had to the challenges that I
threw out
in the text edition of QNews, last week. It seemed to have a wider uptake
than
simply within the VK4 network with it being republished in the UK, USA and
inter-state. To repeat for those who missed it, I will read those parts
again.
..today we seem to have a system that is largely acknowledged as belonging
to the
horse and cart era. With the phenomenal publicity given to our high speed
internet,
via the NBN, and the encroaching 5G networks we still have exam papers,
put in
envelopes with a stamp and mailed around the country for marking.

What happened to the paperless office that was touted 20 or more years
ago? It is
totally beyond the ken of modern thinking people that exams aren¡¯t
conducted and
assessed online. It is ridiculous that the very government departments
that guide
cyber developments have allowed this regressive system to remain.

Realistically, we seem to have dropped the ball on enticing younger people
to trying
our hobby because the marketing that they see is decidedly old fashioned
to them. We
seem to have thrown the Teddy out of the cot over having entry level
licensing and
heavens forbid, now they have access to digital modes.

Isn¡¯t it time to come out from behind the barbecue and give others a
chance to join
us on the airwaves?

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think¡.how about you?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

This has been one of the weekends when a contest marks an important
date. The Remembrance Day Contest, the RD as it is called and known
as the friendly contest has coincided with the week in which the
dropping of the first atomic bombs were remembered and with the
memorial of 75 years since the end of World War 2. For those old
enough to remember, it is a time of quiet reflection and for the
former and serving service personnel it is a reminder of the awful
price that war inflicts. For amateur radio it is the time to remember
those who enjoyed this hobby and who served and died.

Just as Australia, those 75 years ago came out of the smoke and toil
of battle that settled over the whole country with civilians
committed to the ¡°war effort¡±, there was a sense of direction and the
hope of renewal. Before the war was over, there had been planning for
peace, and much of what was built over the last seventy years grew on
that foundation. New houses, new public works brought what was full
employment for many years and businesses grew to service the peace
time community.

Without becoming maudlin or nostalgic, I really think it is time for
a reconstruction of this hobby. There were the structural changes to
the WIA, some 12 years ago, and there has been a redesign of the
licence structure. But today we seem to have a system that is largely
acknowledged as belonging to the horse and cart era. With the
phenomenal publicity given to our high speed internet, via the NBN,
and the encroaching 5G networks we still have exam papers, put in
envelopes with a stamp and mailed around the country for marking.

What happened to the paperless office that was touted 20 or more
years ago? It is totally beyond the ken of modern thinking people
that exams aren¡¯t conducted and assessed on line. It is ridiculous
that the very government departments that guide cyber developments

people to trying our hobby because the marketing that they see is
decidedly old fashioned to them. We seem to have thrown the Teddy out
of the cot over having entry level licensing and heavens forbid, now
they have access to digital modes.

Now if you think that I am throwing out some challenges here, you
are darned right that I am.

Here in a country that has benefited from radio and electronics we
are letting slip the chance to recruit and imbue our neighbours,
young and old, with some learning and a love of exploring a whole
field of science and technology.

Isn¡¯t it time to come out from behind the barbecue and give others a
chance to join us on the airwaves?

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think¡.how about you?

---------------------------------------------------------------------*

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

It was pointed out last week that there were no less than 3 space probes
heading
towards the planet Mars. This is happening whilst the world contends with
pandemic.
The coincidences that occur in the field of discovery can be quite
interesting when
we think about them. The tabloid press will make great stories from these
instances
and many magazines that are now disappearing from our news stands have
feasted on
notoriety and coincidence.

In the fields of electricity there were the so called wars between DC
current and AC
for distribution of electricity. Thomas Edison who had once employed
Nicola Tesla
found themselves on opposite sides. The incandescent light bulb saw Edison
and Swan
arguing who should hold the patents and in the early days of radio, Hertz
established the principles of electromagnetic radiation but the practical
application of wireless is credited to Marconi, in western countries and the
Americas but there are at least contenders from Russia and Japan who could
challenge
the history.

As time has moved on, the contributions of the lone inventor such as John
Logie
Baird, who took the principle of the Knipkow disk and the wireless
technology to
prove television was feasible, is less likely to succeed against the
corporate
developers. RCA, Radio Corporation of America, almost simultaneously with
Baird was
developing fully electronic TV transmission and the Germans probably hold
the record
for the first public transmissions of TV from the notorious Nazi badged
Olympic
games of the mid 1930¡¯s.

Now if you are fanatical about history, you can use your search engine or
even an
old fashioned library to research these types of things. If you are like
the rest of
us you take these stories and tuck them away or forget them until
something reminds
us.
Most of the amazing discoveries that provide the platforms for our daily
activities
tend to be lost unless we stumble over the stories or they are presented
in some
reading material.

An interesting find was from the author who investigated successful
sporting teams.
The ones that rose to the top of their competitions were the ones who had a
charismatic leader on the field. Once that player was gone, the teams lost
their
winning capacity.

With solo or individual sporting events, such as cycling, swimming and
athletics we
have seen nominal barriers and then a cluster of people will emerge to
challenge the
barrier.

This should be telling us something and if we could easily translate it into
practice we would see our amateur radio bodies rise up and prosper.
Leadership can
make a big difference and challenges can spur people to excel. At the same
time we
should not be angered if others come up with ideas that are the same as
our own.
Scepticism bordering on paranoia is the domain of social media and it doesn¡¯t
benefit the individual or our hobby.
If people chose to enjoy the historical side of this pursuit then that is
fine. Many
people enjoy the challenge of Morse code and telegraphy predates wireless
by almost
50 years. If people wish to enjoy digital aspects of amateur radio that is
fine too.
The challenge is to self educate and to use the interest and tools available.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery and that¡¯s what I think¡.how about you?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

There is one of those humorous expressions which contain more than a
grain of truth and that is ¡° a camel is a horse designed by a
committee.¡± That¡¯s to say when you have a nice idea and you give it
to a cluster of people to refine it turns out less than you thought.

During the week, The ACMA released a statement that the Syllabus
Review Committee was being disbanded because it could not achieve
consensus. Here was the idea that the regulator, its assessment
contractor and the amateur community could sit at a table with a
brief to follow and come up with agreement.

Those of us who watched the Wireless Institute of Australia Annual
General Meeting via video link will have heard the President, Greg
Kelly VK2GPK, in answer to a question explain that there has been a
pattern of interference from an acknowledged group of people and this
had disrupted the WIA from full attention to it¡¯s primary purposes.
These are my words as the final version of the video has not been
posted as yet.

So this idea of having a consensual committee seems good on paper but
it does not recognise the reality that there has been one peak
representative body, the body that the ACMA sponsors to the World
Radio Conferences and which also sends representatives to the IARU
and there has been an antagonistic stance from an apparent club which
was given status of a peak body at the table. If the public record
is anything to go by, this thoroughbred was doomed to be less of a
camel and more of a spiny anteater.

On another note, with the impending announcement of our new WIA
Board, I think it is time to ask how many directors have completed
the available training in company governance? It is critical to the
proper running of any organisation that the people charged with
running it are up to the mark, not only with the aims of the body,
but the law and regulations that control its operation. Under the
Company¡¯s Act, the penalties for not following correct procedures
can be extremely high. Not knowing the rules is not the answer that
the ASIC will accept.

The reason I put this question is that for many years, the WIA was
seen as the exemplar to the Amateur club network and whilst the
majority of radio-electronics clubs are now incorporated under state
legislation and the requirements aren¡¯t as onerous as the
Corporations Act, there is that introductory statement that the body
can perform all legal functions to achieve its aims.

We need to remember the rules when we set out to help our fellow
members.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and that¡¯s what I think, how about you?

Here is an update from Ipswich and District Radio Club.

Members are reminded of the annual general meeting to be held at the

of course.

All positions on the executive committee will be declared vacant and
new officer bearers will be elected.

Nominations should be forwarded to the secretary by August 15th ¨C by
post or email to secretary@...

Nomination forms were emailed earlier this month.

A reminder too, that to be eligible to vote at the AGM members must
be financial. Membership fees fall due at the time of the AGM
¨C annual membership remains at $35, or $25 concession.

Again, details were issued earlier this month.

Club secretary Greg VK4GJW is to be congratulated for keeping members
updated through regular emails and hosting Zoom meetings for the
club¡¯s business and social nights during this time of Covid. And
don¡¯t forget, amateur radio has been practicing social distancing for
over 100 years. All of us are experts at it.

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

During the week I saw a press report that as a result of the
pandemic, the social sporting clubs were heading for disaster if they
could not obtain financing of more money than I could dream of. This
was determined by an Australia wide survey and the results show many
small sporting clubs will probably close and never re-open.

With many sports there are on going costs throughout the playing
season such as affiliation dues for players and field officials,
insurances, equipment not covered by sponsorship, transport to venues
and so the list goes on. Not many of our clubs face such demands but
it got me to thinking of how they are surviving with the usual
sources of revenue boosting closed off. The public sausage sizzle,
the car boot sale or the swap meet events have been off the calendar
and I note that cancellations are still occurring but largely
interstate.

There would be few clubs that operate successfully that do not have
to resort to passing the hat around in some form or another. How has
your club been surviving financially so far? What has it got in the
wind to keep things going or does it have enough reserves in kitty to
meet the expected outgoings? What would it mean to the majority of
members if the treasurer stood up and announced that the club had to
close because it could not longer afford to operate?

I know there will be many in the business community grappling with
this precise issue but at the social level there will be clubs like
ours wondering if the sky has fallen in, too. Even if things do look
favourable and the club has continued with video conferencing and now
social distancing, the executive will have been reviewing the matter
and looking at alternative strategies.

A trend that has beset the community for the last couple of decades
is that volunteering has become largely the activity of the senior
citizens. The result is that often the chances of recruiting new
members is reduced. As I mentioned previously, a community group in
my local area has called for expressions of interest for all it¡¯s
executive positions. So with numbers being stagnant or reducing,
just what are the options for funding? Upping the fees is never
welcome and depending on the mix of members, it may price several
out of the club all together.

We all have a familiarity with our local area and it may be necessary
to seek sponsorship if other means of fund raising aren't available.
With sponsorship there is a quid pro quo that for the donation you
agree to display or otherwise promote the business or activity of the
donor. Getting your picture before the media with your sponsor¡¯s name
and logo is perhaps the first step in showing the club¡¯s value.

So what I am suggesting is if the bank account looks like it is
heading into the red, putting the many heads together and exploring
solutions is an important activity in keeping the doors open.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and that¡¯s what I think, how about you?
