For Q news 26 July 2020

Here is an update from Ipswich and District Radio Club.

Members are reminded of the annual general meeting to be held at the
clubhouse on Saturday August 22 from 10am ¨C with social distancing
of course.

All positions on the executive committee will be declared vacant and
new officer bearers will be elected.

Nominations should be forwarded to the secretary by August 15th ¨C by
post or email to secretary@...

Nomination forms were emailed earlier this month.

A reminder too, that to be eligible to vote at the AGM members must
be financial. Membership fees fall due at the time of the AGM
¨C annual membership remains at $35, or $25 concession.

Again, details were issued earlier this month.

Club secretary Greg VK4GJW is to be congratulated for keeping members
updated through regular emails and hosting Zoom meetings for the
club¡¯s business and social nights during this time of Covid. And
don¡¯t forget, amateur radio has been practicing social distancing for
over 100 years. All of us are experts at it.

Reporting from Ipswich this is Allan Roebuck, VK4HIT.

DARLING DOWNS RADIO CLUB

---------------------------------------------------------------------*

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

During the week I saw a press report that as a result of the
pandemic, the social sporting clubs were heading for disaster if they
could not obtain financing of more money than I could dream of. This
was determined by an Australia wide survey and the results show many
small sporting clubs will probably close and never re-open.

With many sports there are on going costs throughout the playing
season such as affiliation dues for players and field officials,
insurances, equipment not covered by sponsorship, transport to venues
and so the list goes on. Not many of our clubs face such demands but
it got me to thinking of how they are surviving with the usual
sources of revenue boosting closed off. The public sausage sizzle,
the car boot sale or the swap meet events have been off the calendar
and I note that cancellations are still occurring but largely
interstate.

There would be few clubs that operate successfully that do not have
to resort to passing the hat around in some form or another. How has
your club been surviving financially so far? What has it got in the
wind to keep things going or does it have enough reserves in kitty to
meet the expected outgoings? What would it mean to the majority of
members if the treasurer stood up and announced that the club had to
close because it could not longer afford to operate?

I know there will be many in the business community grappling with
this precise issue but at the social level there will be clubs like
ours wondering if the sky has fallen in, too. Even if things do look
favourable and the club has continued with video conferencing and now
social distancing, the executive will have been reviewing the matter
and looking at alternative strategies.

A trend that has beset the community for the last couple of decades
is that volunteering has become largely the activity of the senior
citizens. The result is that often the chances of recruiting new
members is reduced. As I mentioned previously, a community group in
my local area has called for expressions of interest for all it¡¯s
executive positions. So with numbers being stagnant or reducing,
just what are the options for funding? Upping the fees is never
welcome and depending on the mix of members, it may price several
out of the club all together.

We all have a familiarity with our local area and it may be necessary
to seek sponsorship if other means of fund raising aren't available.
With sponsorship there is a quid pro quo that for the donation you
agree to display or otherwise promote the business or activity of the
donor. Getting your picture before the media with your sponsor¡¯s name
and logo is perhaps the first step in showing the club¡¯s value.

So what I am suggesting is if the bank account looks like it is
heading into the red, putting the many heads together and exploring
solutions is an important activity in keeping the doors open.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and that¡¯s what I think, how about you?

For the Darling Downs Radio Club Incorporated, the resurgence of

COVid-19 in Victoria may still re-enact a lockdown in Queensland

and interupt our plans.

However the Community Venues, Level 3, City Library Building

have been booked for our Annual General Meeting, at 7:00 PM,

Monday 27th July. Access to the car park from Victoria St, Toowoomba.

---------------------------------------------------------------------*

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

?There are times when I struggle to compose this segment because

there are things that I wish to say but to put them in words can

betray confidences. The importance of trust matters in the way we

conduct ourselves and it becomes especially important when you

actually have to speak for others.

?

Mind you, this is an opinion piece from one amateur in regional

Queensland and not the voice of the body who makes it possible.

?

It is through the efforts of the Wireless Institute of Australia

that we have this vast network of re broadcasters to bring a weekly

news bulletin to all amateurs in VK-land and beyond. It is the

volunteers that give their time and station equipment to put the

weekly news to air and behind the scenes the many contributors who

get behind their keyboards and microphones that make it all happen.

?

So it is that many people contribute so that many more can feel a

closer involvement in things that matter in amateur radio. Because

?people do take things seriously and are conscientious, there can be

disagreements as to the best way of progressing various things and

no doubt this even happens within the membership of the WIA Board.

It would be wrong to expect that directors, fulfilling their duty to

best represent us, the members, would not hold different perspectives

on issues. It would be tragic if the directors were so unprofessional

in their behaviour that they ever resorted to personal abuse.

?

We out here in the ether expect that what we are told by our

directors reflects the true position of the Board and is not a

confection, a made up personal opinion, to impress the listener or

reader. Our directors have a duty, and not simply as a display of

trust, but a legal duty to be honest and accurate in what they report

to us the members. Similarly we may expect the Board members to do

the jobs to which they are appointed but there is also the legal

requirement that they perform their duties fairly and honestly and

not do anything which is outside the constitution or as laid down by

the Corporations Law.

?

So it is with the news that comes out under the name of the WIA must

be honest and fair or the consequences for those who broadcast

material which is false and intended to mislead can be large and

life changing. When material is submitted for broadcast by board

members, it is inherent in the process that it will be truthful and

accurate. Material from other sources may be further vetted if it

seems the provisions covering the amateur radio broadcasts and other

issues might cause harm.

?

Just as there has been attempts to train people, particularly as they

undertake construction projects, on the safe procedures to follow,

there are similar rules that must be followed in putting news in

circulation.

?

If you find that something that you have submitted has been edited

please don¡¯t be offended but understand there are rules we all must

follow.

?

I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and that¡¯s what I think, how about you?

?

?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

?After mentioning that the weather had remained in an autumn phase

it seems that I have to retract that with a nice early morning cold

snap happening during the past week. I remember those mornings,

rushing to finish a shift and scrunching throw the frost and

steaming like a kettle boiling in the early morning light trickling

over a barely awake world. How nice to just pull the covers higher

and have but one decision to make and that is whether to turn on the

electric blanket or not.

?

However, there is one important facet of life that is being stressed

by health officials and that is self-care and particularly caring

for one¡¯s own mental health. You might think it strange to raise

this subject in talking about amateur radio and club activities but

corona virus has brought stressors to bear that many of us have not

previously experienced. Some people react poorly to the isolation

and hanker for a more social life, others have accumulated worries

caring for children and working and still others have seen the most

vicious attack on their finances and livelihoods. Still others, the

first responders and the ex-services members can carry the visions

and memories that haunt them under the name of PTSD.

?

Now it is not simply a case of checking on your neighbour where our

neighbours on the radio spectrum can be anywhere on the planet. Nor

is it simply a case of ignoring the pressures this time has put on

us. As much as we might say ¡°Are you OK?¡± we must look in the mirror,

so to speak, and ask, ¡°Am I OK,¡± too.

?

I have seen pictures of many projects that hams have engaged in

during the imposed isolation and have heard of many new nets that

have sprung up to use amateur radio as a person to person bridge.

?

This is one of the marvels of this hobby that we may never feel

alone with a radio at our side. But for some of us, particularly

it seems, in the quiet hours of the night, the doubts and fears

surface and the mind just won¡¯t settle. It is a mental conspiracy

designed to make us feel distressed at night and tired and anxious

by day.

?

It is important that we take that time to honestly ask ourselves

how we are travelling along life¡¯s path and whether we could be

enjoying life more with some assistance from outside. With video

consultations available with general practitioners and 24 hour

telephone assistance via Lifeline and Beyond Blue, for instance,

we can move on and not feel we are alone.

?

Self-care is important to see us through this big disruption.

?

I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and that¡¯s what I think.

---------------------------------------------------------------------*

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

When you are living the great social isolation and you seek a little
excitement there is no better way than taking the ride-on mower out
of the shed and putting the mind on autopilot. One of the news
broadcast team was enjoying the cyclical thrill of rotating his yard,
this past week, when he was brought cruelly from his reverie.

Around the hour mark of smelling freshly hewed chlorophyll, the
steed not only gave off exhaust fumes but started belching flames
like a barbecue that has was doused with water. It was a close
encounter with the local fire brigade who performed the final
rituals and left a black patch of earth and blackened metal remains
of an afternoon disrupted.

I can safely say the photographs were good in telling the story and
the rider is safe and looking for an old fashioned scythe to finish
the lawn whilst waiting for a replacement herbivore.

(Gee thanks Geoff! Photograph attached and I should have asked YOU to
write my insurance claim - HiHi..Graham VK4BB...Editor.)

Now however, if you are looking to sit an amateur radio assessment
under the new pandemic restrictions, the Australian Maritime College
has released the details for remote supervision. At the moment, you
must be at least 18 years old and have photographic ID. To see the
whole details go to the AMC website and look under amateur radio.

In the past year, the meeting app, ZOOM, has gained popularity in
allowing several people to take part in on-line meetings. It has
been shown that ZOOM is an efficient tool with the usual caveat
that the internet speed must be adequate. Lots of radio clubs have
started replacing the now banned face to face meetings with the
convenience of cyber technology. Last week numerous reports were
published showing that ZOOM meeting videos could be video bombed or
saved and posted to other sites. In other words, there are possible
serious security issues for users who do not follow the security
instructions that come with the app.

The ZOOM publishers have issued updates and it is an easy matter to
now establish password access to a meeting. As our need to remain
isolated is going to remain for the next few months, at least,
it makes a lot of sense to ensure we can enjoy the best means of
contact for social events whilst keeping the content private.
For once in our lives it is important to read the instructions.

Whilst COVID-19 casts a wide shadow over the world, the reports are
that more stations are appearing on the bands. This is good for the
hobby and if we maintain the usual courtesy in our on air activities
we can be assured we all enjoy a pastime like no other.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and that¡¯s what I think....how about you?
How are You going?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

The new normal is descending like a summer fog shrouding the world
before COVID19 in a vapour of memory. The world has changed and the
broadcast news and speaking topics centre around the changes to what
we can safely do and the numbers of those who no longer have to care.
The world will be a smaller place as more people leave it and it will
be a different place for those of us left.

These are the givens as our leaders in so many fields race to find
solutions to issues that are real and modelled by some arcane pieces
of software. The best knowledge that so many have is that gathered
daily and entered into the models. Like the weather forecasters, the
best knowledge is that yet to come. The certainty is currently that
slowly the store shelves are refilling with the necessities of daily
living and even those things bought, shipped or squirrelled are
coming back. We have food and shelter and for the most, income and
for visitors, living amongst us, when their saving have gone the
prospect of destitution. This is just to remind us that the solutions
are not perfect and improvements can be expected to come in the
future.

So as we all adapt to this new normal, I have noticed a few items
which may titillate the restricted lifestyle of a radio amateur.
If you enjoy YouTube you will be pleased that the Radio Society of
Great Britain has released talks from the 2019 annual convention.
If you enjoy the homegrown, our own prolific writer and video maker
Peter Parker, VK3YE, has new material for us to enjoy as well.

This past week there have been reports, not only from VK-land but
North America and the United Kingdom that some nice openings are
happening on 10m. We can have some armchair learning with video-casts
and some excitement playing on the HF bands.

From Townsville, there was a nice story about the local amateurs
preparing to resurrect the ANZAC spirit for this years ANZAC Day
commemoration. On April 25, there will be no marches and gatherings
this year but we, the radio operators can join in activities which
show our past has not been forgotten. Brush up on the CW and learn
how to tune up on AM and join the activity, this year.

If all the posts that I have been seeing are an indication, there
are going to lots of spruced up shacks and stations as a result of
the pandemic lockdown. If conditions continue to improve, we will
have an amazing start to the 25th Sunspot Cycle.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and that¡¯s what I think....how about you?
How are You going?

Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

?

How are you going?

?

The world has been changing every day and more people have to live

with a new reality. Maybe you are still working, working from home,

or are self isolating or like lots of people following a basically

normal routine but staying away from people as often as possible.

?One thing that seems to be taking hold amongst some amateur operators

is the formation of small local nets which allow people to check in

and let others know they are engaging in a hobby that lets them also

check on friends. There are reports in the general community that

people are getting more stressed, mentally, as these rapid changes

occur. One noted mental health expert made the observation that

people are not just anxious but some are afraid. Anxiety is worry

?about what might be but fear is because of what is real.

?I think this idea of supporting each other is part of what we grew up

with, the Aussie spirit, if you like. Before we become too glib,

people around the world are doing these kinds of things as they find

ways to be supportive as well as locked down.

?What we can promote is the social distancing that radio gives and

what a safe and clean pass time it is. The way we operate on air is

generally more welcoming than many of the things I see on the

internet would suggest. A regular net provides a marker in peoples¡¯

routine that they can use to go about their day. A regular net also

takes some of the communications stress away from the internet

whilst it remains analogue.

?

?We as individuals can start a net to serve our own region. It is

probably best to limit the number of call-ins so a clear amount of

time can be devoted and the whole thing doesn¡¯t become unwieldy.

We don¡¯t have to be a great contester giving 5 & 9 reports at

3 every minute. We just need to be someone who can operate a radio

in a friendly and conversational manner. There don¡¯t have to be

repeaters as simplex will work well on most commonly used bands.

Sometimes all that is needed is a simple CQ ¡°my area¡± to get it

started. Other means can work to spread the word and get people

joining.

?Rules, well there shouldn¡¯t be too many other than to ensure people

get logged in and get to speak before the net ends. If they wish to

continue afterwards, that is good too.

?

?If there is anything that we can do during this COVID-19 period, it

is to keep ourselves healthy and find the best enjoyment or

relaxation we can. Just like different programs to support our

military veterans, we can support our fellow amateurs doing what we

enjoy.

?I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and that¡¯s what I think....how about you?

This is WIA Director Aidan, VK4APM in the text edtition called QNEWS

The health and well being of the Amateur cohort and our members is of the
highest priority. Out of an abundance of caution, consideration for the
health and wellbeing of our members, and in an effort to deliver certainty
to the Amateur community (not to mention a federal government mandate), the
board of the WIA met last Wednesday and endorsed the recommendation of the
2020 WIA Conference Organising committee to cancel this event.

The 2021 WIA Conference will take place in Hobart.

The organising committee has recommended, and the board has agreed, that
the 2021 conference be arranged at a date and time such that those who
receive credits for flights and accommodation are in a position to use them
within the 12 month time frame that has been announced by all Australian
airline carriers.

The organising committee will make information regarding the
2021 WIA conference available in the near future.

We would like to thank the organising committee for the enormous amount of
work put into the 2020 WIA Conference and the large number
of people who have already subscribed. We apologise for the
inconvenience caused. These are extraordinary times and they require
extraordinary measures.

All those who have paid registrations will receive a full refund over the
coming days.

The Annual General Meeting is a legal requirement stipulated by the
Corporations Act 2001 (Cth). The board has sought advice from
Australian Securities and Investment Commission and will provide an update
to members in due course.

The WIA board would like to encourage all operators to practice social
separation, wash and dry your hands regularly and promptly seek advice if
you feel you are affected by COVID-19.

Stay safe,

Thats all from me

VK4APM

Hello, I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I've been thinking.

I have lived through sun spot maxima and sunspot minima but this is the
first time I have had to live through a pandemic. With events and venues
closing around the country and around the world it seems that we are
fortunate to have created a space where we not only protect ourselves but
can indulge ourselves in a favourite pastime.

The severity and the brutality with which this health issue has been dealt
with is going to effect the world for years to come. The businesses that
will close and the people who will lose their jobs are what the US military
dub as collateral damage. The way in which the business will continue and
countries will recover will probably remind us of the austerity following
the end of World War II.

With that apparent barrel of gloom, we should remember that we are on the
beginning of Sunspot Cycle 25 and for long wave and short wave operators
this bodes well for interesting and enjoyable conditions improving in the
future. Should we have to perform the "self isolation" routine, it will be
like slipping into our favourite comfortable clothes and relaxing as the
meme on social media has put it, "amateur radio practising self isolation
for years." That is to say, the area we designate as the shack predates the
man cave of more recent times and the shack is a place of familiarity and
stimulation or what we want it to be at any given time.

I certainly haven't heard the hooves of the four horsemen of the
apocalypse and I certainly haven't seen signs of an impending cataclysm
regardless of the state of supermarket shelves. What we need to remember is
that scientific knowledge has never been in a better position to conquer
this microbe and some of the brightest minds are already following leads on
how to limit and then defend humanity against covid-19.

This is part of the reason that we pursue Science, Technology,
Engineering, Arts and Mathematics as learning tools to improve the world
and conquer threats. We hobbyists have the luxury of chasing DX, learning
more of how bits of our stations work and amongst all that, making
observations about how the world works as far as the electromagnetic
spectrum is involved. Some of us will have to make the sacrifice of staying
out of the daily grind to treat an illness or wait until an all clear is
given. How hard will it be to turn the rig on, and with a clear conscience,
play radio?

This is an opportunity and as the mental health experts tell us,
involvement in activities that we enjoy can prevent becoming stressed when
life seems hard. Keep well and until next time..

I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and that's what I think....how about you?
