Hello, I¡¯m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I¡¯ve been thinking.

When we look around, we see many families who create dynasties of
involvement in the
arts, sports, politics and yes even amateur radio. Now of course, to
provide the
enthusiasm and drive that encourages your family members to follow in your
steps is
the stuff of fluff TV series and also real life. We don¡¯t want to create a
false
attitude that everything is always magically joyous but when we look
around there
are enough real life examples to prove that families that play together stay
together.

Look around at your friends and families and see the activities that they
enjoy and
the ones that they share with members of their family. From walks in the
park, to
breeding dogs, to water sports or building things in the garage there are
just so
many activities that keep families engaged and sharing the experiences
with each
other and many they meet along the way. Just look at the crowds that flock
to swap
meets and you see that motoring still has an allure. Just look at fishing
competitions and you see the hunting instinct is alive and well. Turn up
to an
amateur radio field day and it seems it is an individual activity rather
than a
family one.

How many of our younger members ar up for a challenge? Normally we have
the seniors
being exhorted to engage with the juniors in spreading the membership of
radio
amateurs. What happens if we turn that around and have youth educating
age? For me
that seems an eminently sensible idea as the gusto with which young people
take on
new projects is an infectious behaviour and lots of adults are looking for
ways of
broadening their life experiences and also getting more out of family
relationships.

What is it that holds your attention and makes amateur radio a positive in
your
life? Give it a thought and then explain it to your older family and
friends. This
could be a trend in family togetherness and enjoyment of things electronic.

By now, most of us will have caught up with the release of the ACMA news
that they
are delaying the discussion paper on Class licensing. To me this is a good
sign that
the issues that the amateur fraternity have raised are getting proper
consideration
before any major changes are further mooted.
At times it is very necessary to have all the tee¡¯s crossed and all the
eye¡¯s dotted
before proceeding.
Instead of some who have commented that they have to wait for certain
possible
outcomes we should be applauding the fact that our representatives and other
amateurs have been able to present issues for consideration to maintain the
integrity of this service. It is notable that we seem to hear more of the
activities
of ACMA field staff when it comes to the high value, high paying users of
radio
spectrum and non-revenue services such as broadcast reception and CB are
way down
the totem pole in compliance and enforcement. As a service that requires
qualification to operate, let us keep our standards and enjoy what AR offers.

I¡¯m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that¡¯s what I think....how about you?
