QCWA Chapter 111 August Meeting ... EARLY NOTICE
Hi all,
Yes, I know that it's kind of early for a meeting notice. However, since there has been much discussion about where to have meetings, it was decided to do an early notice this time.? It seems that we have a number of our members who no longer want to go to the Golden Corra for various reasons and we have other members who don't want to go to Denny's. I have not heard from many of you but it sounds like it's time to try something new. So.....for the August meeting, which will be on Tuesday, August 30, we are going to try a different place. This meeting will be held at Cheddar's restaurant in Wellington.? I have eaten there a number of times and I have always had a really good meal. You can check out the menu on their website....www,cheddars.com? Note that they do not do breakfast.? Here's all of the info and I will be sending out reminders when the date gets closer.? Date: Tuesday, August 30, 2022 Time:? 11:30 am Place: Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen? (that's the official name of the place) ? ? ? ? ? ?925 S. State Road 7 ? ? ? ? ? ?Wellington, FL 33414 The location is on the west side of SR 7 (Right side if you're heading south). It's between Southern Blvd. and Forest Hill Blvd. so if you're heading south and get to Forest Hill Blvd. you've gone too far. Don't worry...I'll send out all of this information again closer to the date. We will have to do the RSVP system again so the restaurant will know how many will be there and the RSVP info will be included on future reminders. Please.....let's have a good turnout for this. We want to show the restaurant that we have an active membership that supports our organization. Put this meeting on your calendars now, so you won't forget it.? 73, Al, N3EA |

Field Day Questions Answered
Hi fellow Hams, I have had a few questions after my recent group message about Field Day and here are the answers. 1 - What clubs / sites are doing in person Field Days this year? In PBC there are 3.? The Boca Raton Amateur Radio Association. They are a friendly bunch and will be doing it from their club shack located in the park at the West end of Atlantic Blvd in Delray. They have a nice setup and a nice tower. If you live in the South half of the county this is where you would want to go.? The Jupiter Tequesta Repeater Group (JTRG) in Jupiter. They are also a friendly group and as their name implies, they are very heavy into repeaters. But Bert and others also do some HF and will do so again this year. They will be in Carlin Park on Jupiter Beach. They usually borrow a small tower from a local agency and make a good effort. Lighthouse Amateur Radio Alliance (LARA). This is a very friendly group of Hams. LARA will be operating inside the public room at PBC Fire Station 18 in Burt Reynolds Park. This is about 1/2-mile N of Indiantown Rd on the East side of US 1. They will be a class 4 A station, which means they will have 4 transmitters on the air at one time. There will be more than 4 radios since the 6-meter station or a GOTA (Get On The Air) station do not count in the 4 transmitters. And there may be more radios, since they could have 4 CW/FT8 and 4 SSB stations, just a combination of 4 at a time. Those in use will depend on the operators present. They will have 2 large towers with 10–40-meter beams on each, and another tower with a 6-meter beam. Most of the radios will be Icom 756-ProIII's or newer models.? 2 - Do I need to bring my own equipment?? No, you DO NOT need to bring your own equipment. If you have an Icom compatible headset you might want to bring it for your own use. If you have a CW key and want to do CW, I suggest you bring it. As you know we all adjust our keys for our own feel. 3 - What are the hours? FD starts at 2PM local time on Saturday and ends at 2PM local time on Sunday. LARA will be setting up the towers and beams on Friday AM and the radios on Sat AM if you want to come for any of that fun. At least some stations will be on the air for the whole 24 hours. But you do not need to stay the whole time. If you want to come by for an hour or two or three and work a radio that is fine. But I suggest you let me know and I will send you the link to the live signup pages and info. I have no information if the other two FD sites have live signup sheets or not. If there are already 4 operators signed up for the time you are thinking of, you may just be able to watch or possibly help log. We will try to be as accommodating as we can. Someone who is already signed up might want a break and you could fill that slot.? 4 - Will there be food? Yes, we will have coffee, bottled water, assorted snacks, and something for dinner on Sat and Breakfast on Sun. Also, those there will get some lunch on Sat and Sun. We are not cooking food, like at a picnic, but we will have takeout / delivery and maybe some home cooked items. If you want something special, you are welcome to bring it.? 5 - What about Covid precautions? Our space is indoors and is air conditioned with the same high filtration system used for the Fire Fighters and the EMT's in the adjoining rooms. The room is large, and the stations will be spaced a few feet apart so you will not be sitting elbow to elbow with someone else. We will have Purell Hand Sanitizer, medical grade non latex gloves if you want to wear them, Purell Wipes, and Face Masks. You do not need to wear a mask but certainly can if you want to. (I have gotten so used to wearing a mask that I forget I have one on). If you want, you can put a mask over the Mic for SSB. You can also wipe down the equipment with wipes if you desire. 6 - Is there any cost? No, this is free to those interested in Ham Radio. Please contact me by email with any other questions. Thanks, and 73,? QCWA Chapter 111 (Palm Beach) Meeting - June 28
HI Everyone,
I would like to thank those of you who took the time to send me your thoughts about our meeting/luncheon location. I appreciate your input as we try to figure out exactly what we want to do for future meetings. As I said before this was not a vote just an idea for us to receive your ideas about the topic. Having said that, I found it kind of interesting that the result between the two current choices was about evenly split. So, we will continue to work on this as we go along. Please pay attention to our meeting notices each month to see where we will be meeting that month. Also, PLEASE attend no matter where we have our meeting/luncheons. We need your support.? We have received a couple of suggestions for new venues for our meeting/luncheons. If you have any further ideas for restaurants that we might want to consider for future meeting/luncheons please let me know.? This month we will be returning to the Denny's restaurant in Royal Palm Beach. This is the same place where we met many times over the past couple of years. It is located just west of the? intersection of Okeechobee Rd and Royal Palm Beach Blvd. The location is on the south side of Okeechobee Rd.? As we have been doing lately I would appreciate it if you would RSVP to let us know if you are joining us that day. This helps us know about how many to expect and we can inform the restaurant so that they can set us up appropriately. To RSVP please send me an email at? ? amaslin@...? ? or you can just reply to this message here on groups.io. Meeting info: Place: Denny's,?300 Civic Center Way,?Royal Palm Beach Date: Tuesday, June 28, 2002 Time: 11:30 am RSVP:?amaslin@...? As usual, if you find that you can make it at the last minute, please come to the meeting even though you have not sent in an RSVP. You're always welcome. Also, if you know any other hams that might be interested in QCWA bring them along, too.? Thanks in advance for your cooperation.? ? 73, Al, N3EA |
Field Day 2022
Hi fellow Hams, It seems that many clubs that usually do FD in-person are not doing it this year. Part of that may be due to Covid concerns and part may be due to facilities limitations. LARA, Lighthouse Amateur Radio Alliance, will be doing an in-person FD at Fire Station 18, our usual meeting place and usual Field Day site. We can use some more help if you want to participate and have an enjoyable time. We will be Class 4A with 2 towers and 10-40 beams on each and a 6-meter station with a small tower and beam. LARA has nice quad-plexers and filters. The radios are mostly IC-756 P3, an IC-7600, and when I join them, I use my IC-7300 for FT-8 with my own triplexer and filters for further isolation. FS 18 is on US1 about 1/2-mile North of Indiantown Road on the East side of Burt Reynolds Park. I know it is a distance for Hams further South and the Boca Club is doing an in-person FD which you may want to check out. But from Okeechobee North it is only about a 30-minute ride based on how you go. I am sure you would have fun. (It is only about 15 minutes for me). If you are interested let me know and I will send you the link to the online signup form and other plans. There are open slots for SSB, CW, FT8 and all the radios have PC's with common logging software. For FD we use N3JFP's FD program with all the data stored on a common system and displayed on a big screen at the front so you can see both what you have logged in and what the whole group is doing which gets displayed on the screen in the front of the room. You do not need to bring any equipment except if you want to use your own Icom compatible headset or your own CW key. A couple of our regular CW ops are out of town, so there are plenty of spots for CW ops. We set up towers and antennas on Friday 6/24 and radios, computers, generators, etc. on Sat AM 6/25. FD on-air activities go from 2PM local Sat 6/25 to 2PM local Sun 6/25. And then we take it all down Sun after 2PM. We will have an in-person pre-FD meeting at FS 18 on Thursday 6/16 at 7 PM.? If you are interested, you can contact me aj4xm (at) arrl dot net. We have a nice online multipage signup system, layout, food menu, etc. which I can provide the link for. A sample piece is below.? Our website has the site location information at? Thanks, and I hope you participate in FD someway. 73, AJ4XM, Tom Loughney, SBE, IEEE Vice-President, Quarter Century Wireless Association ARRL VE Team Leader ARRL & Laurel VE ARRL & W5YI Instructor ARRL Technical Specialist ARRL Life Member _._,_._,_ |
Meeting location
I've never eaten at the Golden Corral(I came in late to the May meeting and everyone else had finished eating.)so I can't compare pre to post pandemic food selection. I am one of those members who is mobility challenged but getting up and back to a buffet is not that much of a problem for me using the pouch top of my walker as a tray. I am concerned with kids running unsupervised through the restaurant. I will say however I do prefer wait service over a buffet. If that is a preference for a place like Denny's so be it. |

QCWA 111 Meeting Location
Hi Everyone,
As you know we had our May QCWA Chapter 111 meeting at the Golden Corral restaurant in Royal Palm Beach. Even though the COVID-19 situation is still with us, it was felt that going back to a buffet restaurant would be ok at this point. The meeting went well but I have received a couple of comments from our members that did bring up a couple of important issues. One problem was that it seemed to some of us as though the selection of food on the buffet just wasn't what it used to be pre-pandemic. Another problem and, in my view, much more important is that we do have some members who have mobility problems now and just are not happy with the buffet idea and having to carry food to their tables through a busy restaurant. With the number of guests at the Golden Corral, including lots of kids, there certainly could be an accident along the way. I'm sure we all remember the incident with Don Search, W3AZD (now SK). I guess we have to realize that we are all getting a bit older. There was also one comment that I've been made aware of that has to do with the way that the Golden Corral deals with food safety. I know there are some of our members who just love going to the Golden Corral while others would rather see us go back to a place like Denny's where there are servers and a regular menu. So, I want to do a non-binding referendum about all of this before any decisions are made. It's not a vote. I would just like your comments about this situation and what you think we should do for the future. Should we continue with the Golden Corral and potentially lose those members with mobility problems or go back to a place like Denny's which is not a buffet? That's the question. Please email me at? amaslin@...? or? just respond to this message in the group.io site. Many thanks in advance. 73, Al Maslin, N3EA |
REMINDER - QCWA Chapter 111 May Meeting
Hi all,
I hope you are all having a great Memorial Day weekend. Just one more reminder of our upcoming Chapter 111 meeting that will be held on Tuesday, May 31 at 11:30 am at the Golden Corral in Royal Palm Beach. Please come out and join us. One more thing....as you might have heard, the Dayton (now Xenia) Hamvention was about a week ago. Unfortunately, with an attendance that's reported to have been over 31,000 there ended up being a number of COVID-19 cases reported after the event was over. There are a small number of hams in our area that have tested positive for the virus who were at the Dayton Hamvention. These folks attend a weekly breakfast here in our area. They probably brought the virus back from Dayton with them. So, if you were at the Dayton Hamvention, I would like to request that you take a home COVID-19 test if you're planning to come to our Chapter meeting on Tuesday. I attended that breakfast last Tuesday, one day before it was announced that they tested positive. So, in an abundance of caution, I did the home COVID-19 test this morning (Sunday) and I was negative. Thanks for your cooperation. Again, please come out on Tuesday to join with us at the Golden Corral.? If you haven't already done so, please RSVP to me at my email address:? amaslin@...? ?If you decide at the last minute that you want to come to the meeting, please just come on over. We'll be happy to see you. Remember: Date: Tuesday, May 31 Time: 11:30 am Place: Golden Corral in Royal Palm Beach at 10100 Fox Trail South near the intersection of State Road 7 and Okeechobee Rd. Thanks and I look forward to seeing you there. 73, Al, N3EA |
