Re: RAH, Radios At Home, August 19th
If those participating will keep a very basic log of who they were able to contact and maybe some station information like location (grid square or cross streets), power, transceiver, and antenna, I will update the log online so that everyone can get an idea of who is in contact range. Just send the information to my email at my call sign KI7PPW(at)ARRL.net. Your participation is greatly appreciated!

RAH, Radios At Home, August 19th
RAH, Radios At Home Another season of "Radios Under Sun Shade"
(RUSS) has ended. As we get into much warmer temperatures, it's time
once again for "Radios At Home" (RAH) to return. Radios@Home
was initially introduced by Heidi K7ZAE when RUSS was sidelined due to
the COVID pandemic that hit the US in 2020. It was designed to keep us
all ¡°radio-active¡± even though we couldn¡¯t get out to the parks due to
public area closures and social distancing requirements. These days¡.. Simply
stated, it's the same RUSS activities but at home in the comfort of
refrigeration (what some of you refer to as air conditioning). It is
mostly an individual activity since it is at home but you can certainly
invite fellow hams and guests to participate with you. The objective is
to continue exercising our stations and skill set on a regular basis
despite the Arizona heat (which some of you refer to as inferno).
Operating off-grid power is still encouraged. Heidi
has turned over the reins of this event to John, KI7PPW, who is well
known to us as the venerable host of the Maricopa County New Ham
Operator's Net on Thursday evenings and the very frequent guest Net
Control Operator of the Queen Creek Emergency Group's Training Net on
Sunday evenings. One very important item that
has been changed is the duration of the event. To give more folks the
opportunity to participate, the duration is now 4 hours - from 10 AM to 2
PM local time. That should give folks with morning commitments a chance
to possibly participate in the early afternoon. ? When: Third Saturday of every month, from 10 AM till 2 PM ? Where: 146.460 MHz Simplex (T-Encode/Decode 77 Hz optional), 446.000 MHz and at 7.178 MHz LSB for those with HF stations. ? What: Log as many contacts as possible and please be courteous to others that wish to make contacts and move to another frequency if you are having an extended QSO. ? Why: The objective is to exercise on a regular basis our stations and skill set, operating preferably off-grid if possible. ? Who: Any licensed amateur radio operator directly and / or acting as a control station operator for non-hams. |

TETRA Radio Code Encryption Has a Flaw: A Backdoor
This is an interesting article and is worth reading. It concerns a standardized digital trunking technology - TETRA - which is used by many organizations to transmit encrypted data and commands in pipelines, railways, the electric grid, mass transit, and freight trains. Thanks to John, KK7CIE, for bringing it to my attention. Regards, Joe, N2QOJ |
Exclusive Redodo Battery Offer for Local Hams
Exclusive Redodo Battery Offer for Local Hams A member of a local Community Emcomm Group, Jon Wagner, is becoming a distributor for Batteries (Actually, all of Redodo's products).? He is offering the batteries at his cost to anyone who wants to buy.? There is no minimum or maximum purchase.? If you want to get batteries for your solar system, or anything else, this may give you the price break you are looking for. If interested, contact Jon Wagner at (602) 750-8127, either call or text.? He has all the details.? Jon will open up a retail store and website in the September timeframe. In the meantime...... ** Volume Purchase ** ?** Volume Purchase ** ?** Volume Purchase ** ?** Volume Purchase ** Jon is planning a volume purchase soon of the Redodo Lithium 200 Amp Hour Battery for folks looking to set up a backup battery storage system. See: Jon's plan is to order at the time when he reaches the volume commitment of 200 batteries. At that quantity level, the cost per each battery will be $495.? That's $104.99 off from Redodo's current sale price ($599.99) and $204.99 from their regular selling price ($699.99).? That's quite a bit of savings if you are building a multi battery storage capability.? I don't believe Jon is looking for any upfront money, just a confirmed commitment to purchase when available. REDODO batteries include an integrated BMS (Battery Management System) with cell balancing, overcharge, overdischarge, and temperature protection. Jon's distributorship offers a 5-year warranty and performance guarantees for longevity and cycle life as well. Please contact Jon directly for detailed product, commitment, and order information.? His full contact information: ?Jon Wagner, 602-750-8127, jwagneraz@.... This has been a public service announcement for the local amateur radio community by Joe Sammartino, N2QOJ, of the Queen Creek Amateur Radio Club and the Queen Creek Emergency Communications Group.? Exclusive Redodo Battery Offer for Local Hams Joe has no pecuniary, monetary, or other interest in Jon's distributorship business or his special offer to local hams. |
International Space Station Visible Tonight (4 minutes!)
International Space Station Visible Tonight (4 minutes!) Folks - Good news! Another opportunity to spot the International Space Station this evening as it passes over our area in Arizona. It should be a great pass and hopefully the clouds will be minimal. It will pass about 81 degrees above the horizon at its maximum elevation. Treat your family and friends to a viewing of the International Space Station tonight. I find that even the most non-technical family member or friend gets a kick out of seeing the station as it moves across the sky at 17,150 MPH - that's 4.76 miles per second - and about 250 miles above us. If you are an amateur radio operator, take the opportunity to relate how us hams can communicate directly with the ISS or through one of its transponders. The ISS will be visible for 4 minutes and should be a good viewing and becomes visible directly from the NorthWest and disappears towards the South Southeast.
Time: Sun Jul 30 9:11 PM Visible: 4 min Max Height: 81¡ã Appears: 10¡ã above NW
(from 315 degrees)
Disappears: 73¡ã above SSE
(toward 157 degrees)
And, something new! I've attached a chart of the actual pass. Remember, these times are based on a viewing site from the Mesa area (and within 50 miles). If you would like to generate times from your specific city or town, visit this link and follow the instructions. If your specific city or town isn¡¯t listed, pick the closest one: The space station is visible for at least a 50 mile (80 km) radius around each of the listed locations. If you are an amateur radio operator, listen in (or work) on these frequencies: Voice and SSTV Downlink: 145.80 (Worldwide) Voice Uplink: 144.49 for ITU Regions 2 and 3 VHF Packet Uplink and Downlink: 145.825 (Worldwide) - easiest to hear UHF Packet Uplink and Downlink: 437.550 UHF/VHF Repeater Uplink: 145.990 (67Hz PL Tone) UHF/VHF Repeater Downlink: 437.800 Regards, Joe N2QOJ |
K9WMP, Silent Key
Sad news....K9WMP, Silent Key Bob Bingham, K9WMP, passed away on Thursday evening at the age of 90.? The cause of death was the result of a stroke. Bob and his wife Laura, W9WMP, were Laurel Volunteer Examiners. Their VE Group was formerly known as the NOMADS Amateur Radio Test Team. They gave exams every Saturday at their home in "Venture Out in Mesa". It's believed that Bob tested over 1000 people during his service as a VE. Bob and Laura also used to host exam sessions at Quartzfest. On behalf of the ham radio community, we thank you, Bob, for your many years of service growing our amateur radio hobby. Rest in peace and God bless you and your family. Joe, N2QOJ - Thank you Sue Rogers W7SKH for notifying me of Bob's passing. |
