POSITION TITLE: Agriculture Research/Extension Agent
(Crop Protection Specialist)
Pay Level & Step: 26/01 - 35/08
Annual Salary: $22,568.00 - $43,877.39 Depending on qualifications
Location: NMC Rota Campus
Opening Date: 5/01/00 Closing Date: 5/15/00

NATURE OF POSITION:
The position is located on Rota, CNMI, under the direction of the Crop
production improvement program leader and under the direct supervision of
the CNMI-CREES Rota Coordinator.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Agriculture Research/Extension programs are interdisciplinary and require
the ability of the Agent to work as a team member to: 1) Identify and
diagnose important problems of farmers, households, consumers and merchants
2) Establish research and extension program priorities 3) seek and prepare
grant proposals 5) develop a plan of work and 6) implement, evaluate, and
interpret research, extension, and other activities; working with clientele,
advisory groups, Northern Marianas College (NMC) staff, and other agencies
and organizations.

Performs job duties using appropriate research/extension methods,
techniques, and technology; evaluates educational activities for
effectiveness; recruits, trains, organizes, involves, and recognizes
volunteer leaders (youth and adult); establishes and maintains effective
working relations with other extension and research specialists.

The agent will be responsible for the implementation, on Rota, of the
approved CNMI Cooperative Research, Extension, and Education Service
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Project;

For the implementation of the IPM project the agent shall:

1. Participate in the "Training for IPM Trainers" Program;
2. Implement and prepare the report on the KAP survey held on Rota;
3. Hold IPM workshops and community awareness programs on Rota;
4. Manage and assist in the implementation of the weekly pest scouting
activities, ensure the data collected are placed into the database ;
5. Be responsible for the communications channel between farmers and the
concerned technical agents on crop production problems encountered in the
fields; supervise DLNR and local CNMI-CREES staff working on IPM.
6. Assist in other activities related to the IPM project as assigned by the
IPM coordinator with the concurrence with the Rota CREES Coordinator.

Performs other duties as requested.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must have a Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Plant
Pathology, Entomology or related field. Good knowledge of the insect,
disease, weed and other pest problems of the crops grown in the CNMI. A
good understanding of IPM and suitable methods of controlling pests in the
CNMI is required. Training or experience in extension program development
and evaluation, and proposal writing is strongly preferred. Familiarity in
working with computers is required. Good writing is strongly preferred.

effectively with groups. Ability to work as a multidisciplinary team member
or leader and to work well with farmers.
