The Opportunity The School of Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Physics is one of the largest schools at The University of the South Pacific and is sufficiently resourced to pursue excellence in teaching and research. The school offers several Undergraduate programs, including 2 accredited engineering programs (Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Mechanical Engineering), Civil Engineering, Physics, Computer Science/Information Systems, and Mathematics. It also offers Post Graduate study programs. The school seeks to appoint an Assistant Lecturer (x1), Lecturer (x1) and Senior Lecturer (x1) in Mechanical Engineering to teach at different levels (undergraduate and postgraduate and Masters) and a range of standard topics in the area of Mechanical Engineering. The appointee will: ·????????? contribute towards the Mechanical Engineering discipline in planning, teaching, marking, exam setting, paper moderation, administration duties, counseling students, coordinating courses at undergraduate and post graduate level and delivering a high standard of teaching and research in Maintenance and Reliability Engineering, Metrology & Instrumentation, Professional Engineering & Project Management. ·????????? contribute towards the Mechanical Engineering discipline in planning, teaching, marking, exam setting, paper moderation, administration duties, counseling students, coordinating courses at undergraduate and post graduate level and delivering a high standard of teaching and research in Solid Mechanics, Dynamics, Machine Design and Vibrations. ·????????? contribute towards the Mechanical Engineering discipline in planning, teaching, marking, exam setting, paper moderation, administration duties, counseling students, coordinating courses and delivering a high standard of teaching and research in Thermodynamics & Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics, and Computational Fluid Dynamics. USP is a multi-modal university, offering courses in a variety of modes including print, face-to-face, blended and online. The Appointees will be based at the main Laucala campus in Fiji but will teach across all campuses in the region. The appointees will also be expected to teach evening sessions. General standard: ? Assistant Lecturer i) An Assistant Lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the University, particularly at undergraduate level and to carry out activities to develop their scholarly, research and/or professional expertise relevant to the profession or discipline. ii) An Assistant Lecturer is expected to demonstrate excellent communication skills, and the ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff. Lecturer i) A Lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the University and to carry out activities to maintain and develop their scholarly, research and/or professional activities relevant to the profession or discipline. ii) A Lecturer is expected to demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff. Senior Lecturer i) A Senior Lecturer is expected to make significant contributions to the teaching effort of a School, Institute, programme, or an interdisciplinary area. ii) A Senior Lecturer is also expected to play a major role in scholarship, research, and/or professional activities. iii) A Senior Lecturer is expected to demonstrate excellent communication skills, and the ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff.? The Person we Seek To be considered for this position; An Assistant Lecturer must have; ·????????? a postgraduate degree (Masters/PhD) in Mechanical Engineering and/or have equivalent qualifications; ·????????? excellent communication skills; ·????????? experience in distance and flexible learning; ·????????? demonstrated excellence in teaching in a multi-modal environment; and ·????????? meet Quality of Research criteria at equivalent level.? ? A Lecturer must have; ·????????? a PhD in the Mechanical Engineering or relevant discipline with relevant tertiary teaching and/or research experience; or; ·????????? tertiary teaching experience (normally 4 years) at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. ·????????? good research publications in ranked journals with quality of research (QoR) at Lecturer level; ·????????? experience in supervising Master by research students to completion; ·????????? ability to teach a range of topics in Mechanical Engineering; ·????????? excellent written and oral communication skills in English.? ? A Senior Lecturer must have; ·????????? a PhD in the relevant discipline with relevant tertiary teaching experience and/or research experience with relevant industry/professional experience or a significant research profile. For example, Profession-based disciplines; ·????????? tertiary teaching experience (normally 4 years) at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. ·????????? in addition, a Senior Lecturer will normally require a record of demonstrable scholarly and professional achievement in the relevant discipline. ·????????? good research publications in ranked journals with quality of research (QoR) at Senior Lecturer level; ·????????? experience in supervising Master by research students to completion; ·????????? ability to teach a range of topics in Mechanical Engineering; ·????????? excellent written and oral communication skills in English.? Preference will be given to applicants with: ·????????? experience in teaching in developing countries; ·????????? experience in distance & flexible teaching and multi-modal learning; ·????????? willingness to undertake research as demonstrated by research publication records; ·????????? willingness to work as a member of a dynamic team and experience in supervising postgraduate/masters research students; ·????????? experience in teaching in a multicultural environment; ·????????? strong evidence of attracting external grants; and ·????????? able to demonstrate self-reliant and can work independently.
