Position Title : FORESTRY OFFICER

Level : P-4

Forest Resource Division
Forestry Department
Duration of Assignment : Fixed Term - 3 Years
Duties and Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Director, Forest Resources Division and
the immediate supervision of the Chief, Forest Conservation, Research and
Education Service, and with wide latitude for personal initiative, will:

· provide advice and technical assistance on issues related to strengthening
of institutional capacity, within the framework of national forest
programmes in member countries, for sustainable forest management and rural
development, with special reference to forestry extension;
· plan and implement FAO programmes as they relate to forestry extension and
work closely in project development in this field with concerned FAO units;
· promote participatory, research-extension linked, gender-sensitive,
client-oriented and pluralistic extension approaches, and cost-effective
methodologies;
· develop field manuals for forestry extension workers and methods and tools
for enhanced cooperation and networking in the field of institutional
capacity building, as required;
· co-ordinate the preparation and Organisation of meetings, workshops,
seminars in subjects falling in his/her terms of reference;
· identify, formulate, evaluate, provide supervision and technically
backstop FAO field projects in the area of forestry extension and
institutional capacity building;
· maintain close contacts and co-ordinate action with other FAO units and
international organizations and agencies active in forestry extension and
capacity building;
· perform other related duties as required.


Qualification and experience - Essential

Advanced University degree in forestry, agriculture or natural resource
science.

Seven years of progressively responsible professional experience in the
field of forestry extension and institutional capacity building.
International experience. Experience in developing countries.

Working knowledge (Level C) of English, French or Spanish and limited
knowledge (level B) of one of the other two.

Initiative and high sense of responsibility. Ability to plan and organise
work; to write clearly and concisely technical reports and project
documents; to evaluate and coordinate the work of others' Computer literacy
and ability to use effectively word processing and office automation
equipment. Courtesy, tact and ability to establish and maintain effective
working relationships with people of different national and cultural background.


Qualifications and experience - Desirable

Specialisation in forestry extension; working experience with government
institutions as well as with the private sector and NGOS; familiarity with
participatory approaches in natural resources management; experience in the
Organisation of international meetings, seminars and training courses;
acquaintance with the functions and work procedures of international
organizations; knowledge of the third language shown above.

Level P-4 carries a net salary per year (inclusive of a variable element for
post adjustment) from US$ 52661 to US$ 64972 (without dependents) and from
US$ 56549 to US$ 70055 (with dependents).
