Professor, Employment, Industrial Relations and Labour Market Studies

Under the European Union 8th EDF Pacific Regional Indicative Programme
Human Resource Development
Project, the University is seeking to appoint a foundation Professor to
Head the Employment, Industrial
Relations and Labour Market Studies Programme. Applications are invited
from citizens of African, Caribbean
and Pacific (ACP) states and member states of the European Union
(signatories to the Lome IV Convention)
for this position.
This Programme will be part of the newly established Institute of
Advanced Studies in Pacific Development
and Governance. The Institute is an amalgamation of the Institute of
Pacific Studies, Centre for Development
Studies, Governance Programme and Employment, Industrial Relations and
Labour Market Studies
Programme. This new Institute will focus on modern, and where
appropriate, traditional concepts of
Employment, Labour Markets, Industrial Relations, Poverty, Security,
Land, Human Rights, Democratic
Processes, Adjustment and Reform Programmes, and Regional Development
Issues and Policies. This
consolidation of University units is part of the University`s on-going
strategy to more sharply focus its
activities and to respond fully and quickly to key development needs
through teaching, research and
consultancy. One of the expected outputs will be high quality
publications which will be managed by this
new Institute.
The Professor will play the leading role in the establishment of this
new Programme in 2002. As Head of
the Programme, he/she will provide leadership to a series of
multidisciplinary and multi-country research
projects relating to human resource development, employment and
industrial relations, social protection
and minimum standards and related areas.
The Professor will work closely in multidisciplinary teams drawing
researchers from USP and partner
institutions in Europe, liase with stakeholders and policy makers,
develop broad ownership of the research
programmes and ensure that research feeds into human resource
development policy process in individual
South Pacific States and at the regional level. The research outputs
will support the formulation of national
and regional labour market, industrial relations, and human resource
development strategies in South
Pacific States.
The Professor will also contribute to teaching and further development
of courses at the undergraduate
and graduate levels in these areas and will be involved in post-graduate
supervision.
It is expected that the Professor will have a PhD in industrial
relations, labour economics, development
economics, industrial sociology or in an allied area; and have
substantial record of university teaching,
research and publications in one or more of these areas.
The appointee must have demonstrable experience of successfully leading
research teams; working with
developmental agencies, social partners and stakeholders; knowledge of
appropriate international
agreements and practices and of working in developing countries.

The position is available for a period of three years and may be renewed
by mutual agreement.
Salary Range: Professor F$75 337 to F$81 445 per annum
(Inclusive of 15% Gratuity)
The University may pay an inducement allowance of up to 30% to secure
the services of an exceptionally
well qualified candidate.
In addition to the above benefits, the University contributes 10% of
basic salary to an approved
superannuation scheme, provides airfare and relocation costs where
appropriate and substantially subsidises
housing for eligible candidates.

SCHOOL OF SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Lecturer/Assistant Lecturer in History/Politics

The appointee will be responsible for convening, lecturing and tutoring
in the department`s Politics program,
in particular its first year course HP100 - Introduction to Politics.
The position will also entail the preparation
of course materials for extension teaching.
Applicants must have a PhD (or equivalent) in Politics or History, a
proven record of scholarly research
and publications; expertise in politics and public policy; and an
excellent record devising, convening and
administering courses in politics.
For appointment at the Assistant Lecturer level, applicants must have an
excellent Master`s degree and
demonstrated ability to teach and to undertake scholarly research. For
appointment at the Lecturer level,
applicants must have a PhD in a relevant area with a good research and
publication record and relevant
research, teaching and administrative experience at tertiary level.
Preference will be given to applicants with familiarity with the South
Pacific region; and familiarity with
distance/multi-modal teaching. In line with The University of the South

This position is available for a fixed-term period from July 2002 to
July 2005.
Salary Range: Assistant Lecturer F$30 542 to F$36 651 per annum
Lecturer F$38 686 to F$50 902 per annum
(Inclusive of 15% Gratuity)

SCHOOL OF PURE AND APPLIED SCIENCES
Tutor in Physics

The appointee will contribute to the teaching of undergraduate courses
in Physics. Duties will involve
demonstrating and tutoring, the marking of assignments and tasks and,
when appropriate, the marking of
examinations.
Applicants must be citizens of one of the member countries of the
University and must have a postgraduate
qualification in Physics. Applicants with a good undergraduate degree in
Physics with significant relevant
experience in physics application may also be considered.
Preference will be given to applicants with a Masters in Physics;
research experience and relevant teaching
qualification and experience.

Policy, to a limit of F$600.00 per month for eligible staff.
