Nature of the Position: This position is located on Tinian, CNMI. The appointment is 50% for agricultural research and 50% agriculture extension. Duties and Responsibilities: * Agriculture Research/Extension programs are interdisciplinary and require the ability of the scientist to work as a team member to: 1) Identify and diagnose important problems of farmers; 2) Establish research and extension program priorities; 3) Prepare grant proposals; 4) Develop a plan of work and; 5) Implement, evaluate, and interpret research, extension, and other activities; 6) Work with clientele, advisory groups, Northern Marianas College staff, and other agencies and organizations. * Performs job duties using appropriate research/extension methods, techniques, and technology; Evaluates educational activities for effectiveness; Recruits, trains, organizes, involves, and recognizes volunteer leaders (youth and adult); Establishes and maintains effective working relations with other extension and research specialists. * Acts as a Principal Investigator (PI) in the CREES Soil and Water Management Program. * Provides technical advice to farmers and farmer organizations on: 1) Integrated Pest Management (IPM); 2) Crop and fish production; 3) Crop nutrient management; 4) Post-harvest technologies, and 5) Marketing. * Works cooperatively with CREES research and extension staff to: Carry out various experimental studies; Collects, records and analyzes data; Disseminates information generated by research; Produces and disseminates extension publications; Addresses environmental issues facing the agricultural industries including pesticides in the environment and quantity and quality of water. * Coordinates and collaborates with the Department of Lands and Natural Resources and other organizes on projects or programs in agriculture, aquaculture, livestock, forestry, soil conservation, water resources, quarantine, farm equipment services, and other agriculturally-related projects or programs. * Plans and implements and effective public relations program to promote extension and research. * Performs other duties as requested. Minimum Qualifications: A Master's degree from an accredited U.S. institution (or completion of all requirements) in agriculture, horticulture, agronomy or soils. Will consider a Bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. institution in a relevant field (agriculture, natural resources, environmental sciences, biology or physical science, business or management) or equivalent to Bachelor's degree plus two (2) years of practical work experience in scientific research and extension. Desirable attributes include knowledge and practical experience in agriculture, natural resource management, environmental protection, and community development. Has knowledge of tropical or semi-tropical vegetable production and Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Is familiar in working with computers including spreadsheets, database, word processing and MS Office products. Is able to work as a multidisciplinary team member and to work well with farmers. Is willing to work in the field to implement on- station, on-farm or greenhouse experiments. How to Apply: Employment application forms are available at the Human Resources Office of the College.
