Assignment
Under the supervision of the Head of the Entomology Unit of the Agency's
Agriculture and Biotechnology Laboratory, and in accordance with the
IAEA's and FAO's work programmes and budget, to develop and transfer
appropriate technology dealing with the implementation of fruit fly
sterile insect technique (SIT) programmes to Member States. In
particular, the Research Entomologist will:
* initiate at Seibersdorf a new R&D programme on selected exotic
fruit fly species and possibly on lepidoptera;
* improve the efficacy of medfly SIT programmes by providing quality
assured genetic sexing strains to Member States;
* implement a co-ordinated research project on international
harmonization of quality control procedures for mass reared fruit
flies;
* supervise training activities and lecture at regional and
interregional training courses;
* undertake field missions to advise project counterparts on
technological developments;
* establish quarantine procedures and improved infrastructure to
enable research in Seibersdorf with exotic insect pests;
* prepare internal documents, publish research results and
participate in scientific meetings.
Education and Experience
* PhD in a relevant field of entomology and hands-on experience in
the management of area-wide SIT programmes.
* At least 10 years' experience in mass rearing of Anastrepha or
Bactrocera fruit flies, as well as medfly genetic sexing strains.
* Some formal studies on insect applied genetics and proven
experience in the publication of scientific results.
* Practical experience in the transfer of SIT technology to
operational field programmes and quality control procedures.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* Knowledge of the principles and practice of insect SIT field
programmes.
* Proven technical skills in the development of insect mass rearing
systems.
* Ability to work in a multicultural environment.
* Proficiency in English is required and a working knowledge of
Spanish would be an advantage.
Remuneration
Remuneration is quoted in annual amounts in Austrian schillings and is
deemed to be exempt from national income tax. It is composed of net base
salary plus local post adjustment and amounts, after deduction of the
contribution to the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund, to a total
of:

Dependency ATS 810 614 (including a net base salary of US $54 516)
