Publications Manager

The Publications Manager reports to the Registrar through the Director,
Marketing and Public Relations and is responsible for developing and
managing a comprehensive new corporate publications strategy for the
University. This includes: revising the look and content of the
University`s
existing publications to create a new corporate fleet of on-line and
hard
copy publications designed to meet the University`s strategic corporate,
promotional and recruitment goals; pioneering the University`s move
into electronic publishing; and coordinating a range of University-wide,
on-line ventures. The appointee will also be responsible for
coordinating
the production of all publications from initial concept to final
product,
including liaising with all sections of the University; writing and
editing
copy; commissioning photographs as needed; working closely with
graphic designers and managing the final printing and distribution phase
to ensure the timely and quality delivery of each product. This position
will also provide support to other writing projects within the Marketing
and Public Relations Office as required.
Applicants must have a relevant first degree or equivalent technical
qualification; excellent written English skills; a minimum of five years
recent industry experience as a writer or editor within the commercial
publishing field; substantial relevant management experience; a thorough
knowledge of the publishing process including pre-press and printing
procedures; a demonstrated knowledge of contemporary layout and
design trends; excellent computer skills, including a solid working
knowledge of Microsoft Word, PageMaker, Photoshop, electronic mail
and the Internet; the capacity to work effectively with people at all
levels
including external organisations and stakeholders; and a demonstrated
ability to work as part of a dynamic team.
Preference will be given to applicants with an understanding of basic
marketing and public relations principles; knowledge of or interest in
Pacific languages and culture; and knowledge and understanding of
issues relevant to the higher education sector.

School of Pure and Applied Sciences
Assistant Lecturer/Lecturer in Biology

The appointee will be responsible for a second year undergraduate
course in General, Ecology, and will be expected to contribute in other
undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The appointee will also be
expected to conduct research in their field, and in collaboration with
other faculty members; and develop the course to be taught by distance
and flexible mode.
Applicants must have a good first degree in Biology. For appointments
at the Assistant Lecturer level, applicants must have a Masters degree
in the relevant area. For appointments at the Lecturer level, applicants
must have a PhD in Ecology; a good publications and research record;
and tertiary teaching experience.
Preference will be given to applicants with experience in the distance
mode and work experience in a developing country will also be

The appointee will be responsible for the repair and maintenance of all
electronic, electrical and microprocessor-based instrumentation used
for university level teaching and research; setting up a comprehensive
routine maintenance programme for all such equipment and training
technical staff in Departments to carry out minor maintenance and
repairs;
some design and fabrication of instrumentation; and assistance with the
purchase of electronic devices for teaching and research.
The successful applicant is expected to liaise closely with academic
staff in research and development projects.
Applicants must have at least a Diploma in Electronics (or in
Electronics
Engineering), or comparable qualifications; demonstrated extensive
knowledge and substantial experience in the servicing of large
scientific
instrumentation such as as chromatography equipment and the wide
range of spectrophotometers used in university teaching and research.

Distance Education Unit
Instructional Designer

Leading course teams comprising course writers, media specialists,
editors and course development assistants, the appointee will be
responsible for the planning, instructional design and development of
teaching and learning materials for distance and flexible learning
students
of the 12 USP member countries. The appointee will also assist in the
training of other staff within the Distance Education Unit and the
induction
of course writers and other staff, new to distance education. As there
is
a shift in approach to distance education at USP, the role will change
to
reflect these changes.
Applicants must have a postgraduate qualification in a discipline
relevant
to courses offered by the University or in distance education;
significant
experience in the design and development of distance and flexible
learning materials; knowledge of desktop publishing practices;
proficiency
in the use of various computer software and multimedia applications;
strong interpersonal and communication skills; an active interest in
research in teaching and learning; and the ability to work in a team
environment.
Preference will be given to applicants with knowledge and experience in
multimedia course design and electronic delivery; teaching experience,
specifically with ESL students; and knowledge and experience of teaching
in the Pacific or a similar region.

Student Counsellor

The appointee will provide confidential personal counselling to students
and staff who seek help with problems affecting their work or personal
well-being including management of crisis situations where counselling
skills, phychological understanding and emotional support are required.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the proactive
educational programmes of Community Services which include formulation
and presentation of short training courses for students and in
particular,
job search skills. Assistance in the provision of orientation programmes
for new students at the beginning of each academic year is also part of
the
responsibility of this post. There may be an opportunity to teach an
appropriate psychology course subject to the convenience of the
Counselling service as determined by the Provost.
Applicants must have a relevant postgraduate qualification, or a good
first
degree in Psychology or relevant social science counselling discipline
with substantial counselling experience at senior high school or
tertiary
level and experience in developing workshops for staff and students; be
computer literate; and have the ability to work effectively as a member
of a
counselling team that operates on the basis of professional and mutual
understanding.
