South Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP)

Vacancy: CLIMATE CHANGE OFFICER

Applications are invited from nationals of SPREP member countries to assist Pacific Island countries to protect and improve their environment to ensure sustainable development, specifically to understand and respond to climate change, variability and sea level rise. The successful candidate will be primarily responsible to:

  • coordinate the work programme in relation to climate change, variability and sea level rise;

  • ensure effective liaision and coordination of the programme with all relevant donors, international and regional organisations and institutions involved in climate change, variability and sea level rise in the Pacific; and

  • further develop and implement the regional Framework for Action on Climate Change Variability and Sea level Rise and related Roundtable process.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Candidates must have appropriate tertiary qualifications (preferably post-graduate qualifications in a relevant field) from a recognised institution with at least 5 years¡¯ work experience, preferably within the Pacific islands region, in climate change related activities. Other essential requirements are: proven programme management experience; the ability to manage the work of consultants and to meet project deadlines under difficult circumstances; a proven ability to prepare proposals and reports; outstanding leadership and public speaking skills; a proven ability to live and work within Pacific island communities and to work as part of an inter-disciplinary and/or multi-cultural team. Applicants with a demonstrated interest and involvement in island issues and in assisting Pacific island countries understand and respond to climate change, will be highly regarded.

Conditions

Appointment will be at the Project Officer/Adviser Level of SPREP¡¯s authorised salary scales for contract staff. The package will include annual return airfares, a housing subsidy and other benefits. SPREP remuneration may be tax-free depending upon circumstances. The appointment will be for 3 years initially, with renewal for a further period depending upon the officer¡¯s performance during the first term and availability of funds.
