South Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP)

Vacancy: Project Officer, Avifauna Conservation and Invasive Species

Applications are invited from nationals of SPREP member countries to advise
and assist members in ensuring the wise use of bird species and their
habitats to facilitate recovery of endangered species and conservation of
other indigenous avifauna, and the prevention, eradication or control of
alien invasive species which threaten natural ecosystems, habitats and
species. Primarily, the sussessful candidate will undertake the following
duties:
¡¤ Oversee the implementation of the Regional Avifauna Conservation and
Invasive Species strategies;
¡¤ Manage ongoing in-country projects in both Programmes;
¡¤ Commission and manage new in-country projects which implement the Regional
Avifauna Conservation and Invasive Species strategies, in particular
implementing the priority projects identified in the Regional Avifauna
Conservation workshops;
¡¤ Coordinate the development and implementation of a regional bat
conservation programme.

Requirements
Appropriate tertiary qualifications with at least 5 years' work experience
in this field preferably within the Pacific islands region. Other essential
requirements are: sound coordination, communication, facilitation and proven
project management experience; relevant technical knowledge in avifauna
conservation and invasive species, and ideally bat conservation; and an
appreciation of the conservation issues in Pacific countries. Also required
is the ability to undertake work programme planning (including budgetting)
and deliver on agreed work programme outputs (often under difficult
circumstances); to work as part of a inter-disciplinary and/or
multi-cultural team; and a proven ability to live and work within Pacific
island communities.
