South Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP)

Vacancy: PROJECT COORDINATOR, PERSISTENT ORGANIC POLLUTANTS (POPs) DISPOSAL

Applications are invited from nationals of SPREP member countries for
implementation of the POPs disposal programme, which is part of the POPs in
Pacific Island Counties (PICs) project, phase II. Responsibilities include
the following activities:
¡¤ liaison with member countries to encourage and assist their participation
in the POPs Disposal programme;
¡¤ field work and associated activities for preparation of a regional
inventory of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and organochlorine stockpiles;
¡¤ preparation of PCB and pesticide site clean-up and disposal plans;
¡¤ day to day liaison with the Clean-up and Disposal sub-contractors, on-site
monitoring of the clean-up work and preparation of audit reports;
¡¤ preparation of all routine project reports and a final Technical Report; and
¡¤ provision of technical advice to SPREP members on hazardous waste issues.
Note: this position will require a significant amount of travel throughout
the Pacific region.
Requirements
Appropriate tertiary qualifications in engineering or science from a
recognised institution, at least 5 years' work experience in the area of
hazardous waste management and disposal, preferably within the Pacific
islands region. Other essential requirements are: proven project management
experience; developing country experience; proven ability to work with
senior government officials and as part of a inter-disciplinary and/or
multi-cultural team; proven ability to prepare proposals and reports to meet
project deadlines (often under difficult circumstances); and a proven
ability to live and work within Pacific island communities.
