South Pacific Regional Environment Programme
(SPREP)

Vacancy: Meteorologist/Climatologist Officer

Applications are invited from nationals of SPREP member countries, primarily
to undertake the following duties:
¡¤ promoting and monitoring the implementation of the Strategic Plan for the
Development of Meteorological Services in the Pacific region;
¡¤ assisting Directors of Meteorology in the region with project proposals,
data analysis related to climate variability and change, and with
strengthening the capacity of meteorological services in the region;
¡¤ organising Regional Meeting of Directors of Meteorology as required by
members, including the mobilisation of necessary human and financial resources;
¡¤ acting as SPREP contact with regional and international bodies involved in
meteorology and climatology, in particular the WMO Subregional Office for
the South West Pacific;
¡¤ identifying the physical relationships between changing meteorology
variables and other physical phenomena such as sea temperatures, sea level
change, natural disasters and other factors which have bearing upon
sustainable development in the region; and
¡¤ assisting with the development of SPREP work programme, management
briefings and SPREP's monitoring and evaluation protocols.
Requirements
Appropriate tertiary qualifications in meteorology or climatology from a
recognised institution, at least 5 years' work experience in this field
preferably within the Pacific islands region, and demonstrated interest and
involvement in research, educational training in meteorology/climatology
affecting the region, particularly as they relate to the global climate
change and climate variability. Other essential requirements are: proven
project management experience; ability to manage the work of consultants;
proven ability to work as part of a inter-disciplinary and/or multi-cultural
team; ability to meet project deadlines (often under difficult
circumstances); proven ability to prepare proposals and reports; and a
proven ability to live and work within Pacific island communities.
