Research Position - Population and Health Studies

Level 11, 12, or 13 (Equivalent to Assistant or Associate Professor).

Established by the United States Congress in 1960 to promote mutual
understanding and cooperation among the governments and peoples of
the Asia-Pacific region including the United States, the East-West
Center seeks to foster the development of an Asia-Pacific community
through cooperative study, training and research. Center activities
focus on the promotion of shared regional values and the building of
regional agencies and arrangements; the promotion of economic growth
with equity, stability, and sustainability; and the management and
resolution of critical regional as well as common national-level
political, economic, and social problems. Issues addressed at the
Center must have direct relevance for US-Asia-Pacific understanding
and relations.

Research in Population and Health Studies focuses on understanding
how demographic and health factors interact with social, economic,
cultural, environmental, and political conditions. To further
strengthen its research capacity, the East-West Center is searching
for highly qualified candidates for a new position in the area of
population and health studies.

The Center's primary interest is in a candidate who has demonstrated
a strong grounding in policy-relevant research in the behavioral and
epidemiological aspects of health and/or the interaction of health,
population, and the environment. Applications will also be considered
from candidates with background and experience in policy-relevant
research in one or more of the following areas: 1) internal and
international migration (including refugee issues); 2) population
aging and its implications; 3) marriage, family, and gender issues;
and 4) population and economic development.

Researchers at the East-West Center should have a strong interest in
the Asia-Pacific region (including the United States), should have
the capacity to lead international teams in collaborative,
interdisciplinary projects, and should be able to communicate results
and recommendations in a clear and concise manner to academic as well
as informed policy, public, and private-sector audiences. Candidates
who wish to be considered for a position at Levels 12 or 13 should
demonstrate a record of success in obtaining funding for research
projects. Good communication skills in the English language are
necessary; fluency in an Asian language is an asset.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent. A Master's degree and ten
years relevant research experience is considered as equivalent to the
Ph.D. Salary is negotiable commensurate with qualifications and
experience. The Center has an attractive package of fringe benefits
including a 25% cost of living allowance (COLA) and the TIAA/CREF
retirement program to which the institution contributes 16.53% of
base salary. Annual salary (including COLA) is as follows:

Level 11 (for new or recent PhDs) starting at c. $49,000
Level 12 (for PhD plus four or more years of post-PhD experience)
starting at c. $58,700
Level 13 (for PhD plus eight or more years of post-PhD experience)
starting at c. $69,800.

Initial appointment would be for a period of three years.

Applications must include:
¡¤ A cover letter documenting relevant interests, qualifications,
experience, and future research plans
¡¤ Curriculum vitae
¡¤ One writing sample (not exceeding 15,000 words)
¡¤ Three letters of recommendation.
