High density foam: I would touch base with Steve Brodie at the PSC factory - my first instinct would  be no - due to compression; their pounds per meter is pretty low compared to density of marine plywood, if my math is correct?

Thanks for the feedback. I am considering Coosa blue water 26 composite and epoxy. Any opinions on using Coosa to rebuild the mast step?

The mast step on Intuition, our 1990 Pacific Seacraft 31, was rebuily in 2017. There are 3 layers of fiberglass with marine plywood sandwitched between. The layer just beneath the deck layer of fiberglass came out like pulled pork!
See the photo section labeled mast step. We used a hole saw to pentrate the first layer of fiber glass; when we found the pulled pork, we completely removed the top skin and removed all the rotten wood.The second layer of plywood only had a small amount of rot and was easily cleaned out.
The plywood removed was replaced with G5 board and epoxy(so no more plywood directly underneath the mast step - the marina completed the project in about 4 days.

This problem was detecte when stepping the mast and rig tuning.

Hello - I am in the middle of refurbishing an 88’ PSC31.
This boat was a hurricane salvage so lots of projects ahead of us. Just finished up with topsides delamination project. Mast step moisture project next. Has anyone rebuilt their mast step? Interested in know what approach they took. Thanks Jay

I purchased my 1990 PSC 31 in Seattle about 2011 and luckily it had a first generation Profurl boom furler installed by the original owner about 2000 in Annapolis.?? I sailed her offshore from Seattle to Dana Point and the boom furler feature is great (maybe essential) for offshore.? Infinite reefing options and if the furler jams, no big deal, just drop the main and secure it around the boom like a regular sailboat.??

?

On the other hand, ?a mast furlers jams, you are stuck with a main you cannot get down. Coastal day sailing may not be too bad, but a jam can be embarrassing in 35 knots of wind offshore. That offshore experience sold me on boom furlers if you care tp venture out.

?

Hauling the boom furled main with the old Lewmar 16 gets to be a bit of a task.? After a few years, I took a page out of the configuration of Stu’s boat that has an electric halyard winch.?? So several years ago, I gave myself an octogenarian birthday present of a next generation electric halyard winch from Harkin. The Italians now make a nice little “Unipower” winch with the motor now inside the winch drum and barely intrudes below the headliner in the head.

?

Now I never leave the cockpit when solo and just turn into the wind and the main is up or down in 15 seconds. Just like the mega yachts in Portofino.

?

A boom furler retrofit is a little pricey, but what else are is an octogenarian going to spend money on if he loves sailing.

When single handing, I like an inflatable Kayak. Otherwise, I have a Zodiac with inflatable floor and an electric pump. Tow in the islands and store just ahead of dodger when lake crossing …

Also on Lake Superior - put of Port Superior Marina near Bayfield and the Apostle Islands.

Installed the Airhead composting toilet fan in the wet locker behind the head - venting into the starboard lazarette! I will see how well this works in 2024.

Here is a photo of the Airhead Composting Toilet - not quite complete yet, needed to purchase some more hose to get a good fit and routing of exhaust hose to fan!
