Re: Drag / G-tech

Yep, I have a G-tech that I haven't used in the 928 yet it worked consistent

numbers in the Talon; due to how it is measuring it will never be the same as the drag strip but for tuning purposes it is dandy toy. Tom, if you want to borrow this let me know. I also have setup called a GEEZ (I think); its a 3 axis accelorometer. With some software to record how a run around the track looks (braking, cornering, accel, etc). Only problem is that it only records one lap at a time ( it was designed for autocrossers). So, kind of hard to get good use out of it on a 20-30 minute session on a road course. thirty; an econo box wanted to play, since no one was around I punched it up. I saw a redlight coming up so I stayed in it to the last second. Applied those great brakes, felt the ABS doing its work and came to a stop on the line. The econo box finally caught up and went flying into the intersection on a red light. Okay, I shouldn't have egged him on but it was funny to see him locked up in the middle of the intersection. cheers ----- Original Message -----

Family station wagon? That's your 928, right? And now I find out you've got a hot-rod Volvo! And, 0-60 in 6.5s? Did you tear out all the seats? :-) I used to really like Volvo's monster wagons, btw. Just you wait, though: once I get my new wheels bolted on you may just be intimidated right off the road! Or not. I *should* be out at Driver Skills Day trying out my new rubber at this very moment, but somehow my wheels & tires were sent to Iowa last week. Maybe I should have called out once a week (6 or 7 times) to remind them to use my new address. I ordered some other goodies from DR, too, all of which got delayed due to Kinesis' leisurely pace. Including one secret part! Curt -----Original Message-----

Later, tom 87S4 P.S. Re; Coil discussions
Ralph S. Smith
Tom, the coil does effectively amplify the voltage, but it is more
complicated and it is really a just converting low voltage energy into high voltage energy. In reality the voltage forces some sizable amount of current through one of the coil windings which creates a magnetic field in the core. The field is stored energy, when the current in the first winding is stopped suddenly the energy in the field has to dissipate, go somewhere, so it creates a HUGE voltage in a second winding which eventually ionizes the gap between the spark plug electrodes, the rest is...well....fun. Louie mentioned the CD ignition approach which is different in that the energy is stored up in a capacitor (hence the name Capacitor Discharge) then dumped suddenly into the coil. It is change in the current flow in a coil (or transformer) that generates voltage in coils. Conservation of energy, voltage, current, joules oh boy I am making my head hurt, anyway. Yes, I think Accel has one although not all of them. Mallory and Fireball seem to be available in all the autoparts places. The look distinctly different and small, not long and round, more boxy. Louie has a point about saturation, I also have forgotten most of the little magnetics I learned in the first place. If the design is correct saturation should be avoidable, although I am not sure if saturation is good or bad in an ignition system. I believe Louie is also correct that choice of coil would depend on the ignition control system. The reason it is attractive is that they seem to be getting popular. The whole chrysler line uses the Ecoil in the distributor cap don't they? I like the E style better and was hoping to use them when the shark needs new coils. RSS |

Re: Re; Coil discussions
Hi,
<> I would be just a little careful if you are considering changing to a different coil type. The Bosch ignition books I have read indicate that the ignition systems change the coil charging rate depending on the engine rpm so the spark doesn't fall off at the higher rpms nor use excessive current at lower rpms. To me, this means that the coil is an integral part of the whole ignition system. Change coils and you may end up with a poorer performing, less reliable system than stock. Do some tests with the new style coil and see if they really are better before the originals fail. If you have a dual coil 928, try an E style on one side and compare spark to the other side. The earlier 928s, I believe, would be more tolerant to an aftermarket coil than the later dual coil more sophisticated systems. The 928 ignition system (other than the plug wires) seems to be one of the more reliable electrical parts of the car. Guess that's still not saying much<g>. I'd hate to damage an ignition control module because the (improved) coil was the wrong impedance or something. I don't want to dampen anyone's enthusiasm for improving their car. Think through what your goals are, do research, and weigh all the possibilities. Louie Ott |

Shark Drag Update
Adam Birnbaum
Hello everyone,
I called SIR again about the drags on June 25th. It appears that the format has changed from a straight "import day" to "high tech import vs. american muscle". Just though I'd let you know. I again got assurances that our stock radiator overflow tanks and battery boxes would pass tech inspection, so it looks like everyone should be good to go. The guy did say that the cars shouldn't have any major leaks, need decent tread, and no cracked winshields. If you car will break into the 13's (are you listening Louie, Lloyd, and now Bobby -The GT brothers) you will need to have a Snell 85 or better helmet. I will bring mine just in case anyone needs to borrow it, I'm sure I won't need it. Gates open at 8am, races start at 9am. At the ticket booth you will need to buy a tech card for $25. Then pull up to the tech lane and get checked out. I am planning on being there early, probably at 7:30. The more the merrier, this way we can stake out a place in the infield to pit. The track said there can be anywhere from 200 - 500 participants, and that you will get anywhere fro 2-5 practice runs to dial in. Okay Team, LET'S ROCK! -Adam |
