PacNW928guys- I just wanted to give a bump to this thread. So far we have Tom928, Aaron K, Keith M, and myself who have confirmed for the BBQ. Recently, I ordered a bunch of stuff from Pelican Parts and enclosed in the box was a $100 voucher for a case of wine. We're gonna need more than 4 guys to drink 6 bottles of wine! LOL I'm leaning towards the 26th of this month if that works for Tom, Aaron, and Keith, but I can't wait any longer than that to address the timing belt issue. If y'all aren't too busy, let's have a party before summer has passed us by! Let us know!

Tom928- Since you've generously offered to take the lead and bring tools for the timing belt adjustment, I wanted to check and see which red wine is your favorite. There is a Pinot, a Zinfandel, a Malbec, a Syrah/Shiraz, as well as several Cabs, and red blends to choose from. See the attached screenshots.

Keith- Since you've kindly offered to host, if you like red wine, let me know your preference. Otherwise, let me know your favorite white wine, beer, or spirits. I'd be happy to bring something for you.

Agreed, this is a very kind offer and I’d love to attend. It’s about 30-40 min from my house and a much better option than trying to squeeze in to my garage.?

Full disclosure some unforeseen events are going to force me to put my car on the market but I would imagine this will not take place before the meet up.

Happy Friday everyone.

Kind of you to offer! Your place sounds perfect for a BBQ. I'm almost always up for 928 wrenching sessions and am willing to help people with whatever jobs I know about. For the timing belt tensioning on my car, the best dates would be the ones in August (preferably the 12th if that works for others). I don't think it would be wise for me wait too much longer than a couple weeks to look at the belt and tension it.

Pacnw928guys- How bout it fellas? You guys up for a timing belt wrenching session and BBQ in Battleground on the 12th or 26th of this month? Let us know!

Hi Keith,

Tom928 and I have decided to hold off on the BBQ for a little while and see if we can find someone near Portland or Vancouver, WA who is willing to host. That would make it easier on the folks coming from Washington. Hopefully, you'll be able to make it on whatever date is decided upon. Have fun at Raceway Park!

Re: For Sale - 1987 928 S4, accepting offers - Sammamish, WA

Okay Brian.... if you can't make the meetups, you'll have to figure out whether you have a worn plastic part on the upper hatch release, or a worn aluminum lever on the lower hatch receiver. In my experience both parts become worn simultaneously. If you only replace the plastic part in the upper hatch release, and don't attend to the issue with the excessive space between the aluminum lever and housing of the lower hatch receiver, you will not solve the problem. Many times however, even when the plastic piece in the upper hatch release is worn, resolving the receiver issue does solve the problem and you can ignore the worn plastic piece for awhile. Mine is that way and it hasn't been an issue. See the attached pics for an overview of the plastic piece on the upper hatch release. Replacing the plastic piece is a pain in the butt and it seemed worth avoiding if possible. (see notes with attached pics)

My approach would be to remove the lower hatch receiver and operate the gold lever by hand. Look to see that there is only a very tiny space between the lever and housing. When removing the lower hatch receiver, be VERY careful as you pry the gold arm from the motor. At the end of the gold arm is a plastic attachment that clicks into a rounded pin on the motor. You have to use a standard screwdriver to gently pry the arm away from the motor. Rotate the screwdriver back and forth a tiny bit until it pops off. When you reinstall the receiver or a new one, you can pop it back into place by hand. All the other disassembly is pretty intuitive. I couldn't find the step by step instructions in my saved webpages, but they are on Rennlist. It took me 20-30 minutes to find them the first time. I can try again later to find them if I get a moment.

Hope that helps. Feel free to ask more if you get stuck.
Mick

Yes Brian, that's the correct part. If $123 is no big deal to you, it's not only the easier approach, it's also a more permanent repair. If you're looking to sell the car, saying you replaced it is better than saying you used zip ties! LOL Do you plan to be at the BBQ in Vancouver or Portland if we can find someone to host? It'd be better if I could see the existing receiver operate as you pull the auto release from inside the car, I'd be able to say for sure that my diagnosis is correct. I'd hate to have you order the part and have it not solve the problem. I will say though based on my experience and extensive rennlist readings, that if the motor engages when you pull the release, and the gold metal arm rotates and operates the aluminum alloy lever, but the hatch does not release, 90% of the time, the lever is worn.

There are some other less common reasons the hatch won't release, but you've already replaced the silicone insert, so it's not that. Other issues can involve the hatch not being properly aligned if it was ever removed, the hatch receiver not being properly aligned, or the white plastic part in the upper hatch release being worn. Let me ask you this...when you use the key to open the hatch, are there any problems? Or does it open without issue?

If you decide to do the repair on your own, let me know and I'll send the Rennlist links that were most helpful to me. It wasn't a hard job. But releasing the gold metal arm from the motor is tricky.

No problem Brian. All you need is a few zip ties (I have a bunch). If you do have an extra receiver unit, replacing that is MUCH faster. I helped my Dad do this repair on one of his 928s using the zip tie method, and had to file for almost two hours to get the zip ties the correct width. (probably with a courser file, it would have gone faster, but it still would have been tough...not much room to work in there). If you find an extra receiver, before installing it, check first to see that the aluminum alloy release lever isn't worn. There should be very little clearance between the release lever and the housing. If there's too much clearance on the replacement part, you'll likely be facing the same problem you are dealing with now.

Hope that helps some. Let me know if you have any other questions,
Mick

Hi Brian,

Not sure if you have the time to do the repair, but if the hatch motor is working but not opening the hatch, it is almost certainly due to a worn part which seems like its a soft metal like an aluminum alloy (see attached pics). You could find another hatch receiver/release mechanism (I've seen them for $100 to $125 at times). Installation is maybe 15-20 minutes. If you don't feel like spending the money but have some time, you can install zipties like in the pics I attached. If you use the zip tie method, you have to file them down to the right width and that's really the only hard part of the job. It's time consuming. The only part of the job that risks breaking something is prying the arm from the motor that runs the release mechanism. It takes a soft touch. I'll explain more if you decide to do the job. If you can make it to the BBQ, and bring the car, I'm happy to help. If you can't bring the car, I'll show you how to do it by looking at another 928.

Good luck with selling the car!
Mick

Things I've done since purchasing:
  1. Installed new wiper motor (see #4 above for issue) (Chris' German, ouch)
  2. Crank shaft end play measurement in-spec (Chris' German)
  3. Fixed short in passenger door harness (Chris' German, ouch)
  4. Installed a period correct and working head-unit (Blaupunkt Bremen SQR 46) (myself)
  5. Repaired the right door speaker, and installed new rear speakers (myself)
  6. Installed a subwoofer in the spare tire location (myself)
  7. Installed new plastic cowling / cover near firewall - unfortunately it seems to be conflicting with the wiper motor, so I question the wiper motor's positioning

  2. Scratch on sunroof, and leather headliner on sunroof is perturbed as well.? Unclear if sunroof is binding etc, have not tried to diagnose
  3. Instrument cluster binnacle is a different colour than recovered dash
  4. ABS light came on (possibly sensors at front brakes?)
  5. Cruise not working (would ABS warning kill it?)
  6. AC only works at coldest setting (possibly outside temp sensor)
  7. Rear hatch motor working, new plastic insert, but does not pop the hatch
Comes with a bunch of spare parts - stock steering wheel, various odds and ends.? Can try to inventory for serious buyer.

Mick

If you can make it to the BBQ, and bring the car, I'm happy to help. If you can't bring the car, I'll show you how to do it by looking at another 928.

Good luck with selling the car!

Original listing on BAT is here:?

I purchased when I believed I'd be commuting to/from work and made a drunken successful bid on this shark.? Instead the shark is just sitting around as I work-from-home, and my Sprinter RV is always in the way in the driveway...

  8. Purchased a set of Cup wheels from Keith Martin, not currently installed - would come with car.? Tires are in excellent condition, but "expired"
Notable things wrong with the vehicle after purchase:
  1. Paint was not as expected - respray, my fault for not catching prior to purchase

Basically, I'm not using the car, and it is too much for me to handle the repairs, and having a shop do any of the work is cost prohibitive.? I am entertaining offers.? Don't be shy.? If i can't sell it reasonably, i'll try to contact Leif and see if he'd make an exception and take care of my remaining woes (cruise, a/c, abs, hatch)

Brian in Sammamish WA, codepoet@..., text at 425-368-8005.? Far prefer email or text, typically can't take phone calls.? Will gladly provide current photos if needed, but there's nothing changed really since the BAT listing...
