Re: Nology install OOPS!

Chris Ford

Adam

Nasty, no all my studs went back in without any issue and I used the same
procedure you did so nothing wrong there. I think I would be tempted to take
the valve covers off and check for debris too.

I feel for you, the simplest tasks .....

You can use the clip on the valve cover nearest the front of the engine to
get one wire on but as you suggest there are a number of redundant clips.

Keep us informed.

I installed my Nology wires, which was simple enough. I did have something
strange happen, twice as a matter of fact, and would like some input. (Chris
are you reading this?)

First off, the upgraded ground eyelets are the perfect size to ground at the
nearest valve cover bolt. The valve cover bolt goes through a rubber
grommett, which has a cup washer on it for the head of the bolt to torque
against. I looped the ground wires for Nologies in such a manner that they
were sandwiched between the bolt head and the cup washer. I grounded two
wires to a single valve cover bolt. I screwed down the first valve cover
bolt using just a hex key. The bolt turned somewhat freely, and I assumed
that the extra space that the ground eyelets were taking up in the bolt
shaft were not allowing the valve cover bolt to go deeply enough into the
threaded hole. I pushed down as I turned the hex key but still no bite. I
pulled the bolt out and it threads were chewed up. I'm somewhat suprised at
this. I don't know if I should be relieved in that by deduction if the bolt
took the punishment the head threads should still be okay. Never having
been one to know when to leave well enough alone, I proceeded with EXTREME
caution and tried to bolt down the second set of ground wires, no problem.
No problem with the third set either. On the fourth, the bolt cross
threaded again. I should note that when the bolts cross threaded, I
couldn't feel any resistance, or anything indicating that the bolt was not
entering the hole correctly.

I'm going to order new valve cover bolts from 928 Int'l tomorrow, and email
DR about my experience and see if he has any input.

Questions:
1) I would like to run a tap to clean up the threads for the new bolts,
sound like a bad idea?

2) For those that have done the install already, did you use the stock wire
clips? It appears that the clips that bolt to the valve covers would
definitely not be usable as this is where the thick part of the Nology wires
rest. The portion of the plug wires that criss cross the front of the
engine look like they may take the clips, but it seems that the clips would
really be crimping down on the wires.

Thanks for any input,

-Adam

Well that shows how much attention I pay to America autos. I do remember
seeing the coil in the plug cap somewhere and it is a cool idea, elimiating
the distributer is a "giant step for mankind" as it were. Supras (I am
familiar with) had 3 coils firing 2 plugs each to eliminate the distributer,
very nice.

Louis's caution is worth considering, that is why I was wondering if anyone

I finally figured out what was wrong with my heaters temp control.
Just in time for summer mind you. I just wanted to take this time to
let everyone know that I will be out of town for a week, so if you
email me, its not that Im ignoring you, I just dont have my computer
with me. I might take along my lap top but probably not. I am looking
forward to the drags and seeing everyone again. I think it will be a
lot of fun. Its good for me to know that everyone at the dyno day
will be spotting me time if we go up against each other. Me having
the oldest, slowest shark there. Oh well, at least I will look good
losing.

Yep, I have a G-tech that I haven't used in the 928 yet it worked consistent
numbers in the Talon; due to how it is measuring it will never be the same
as the drag strip but for tuning purposes it is dandy toy. Tom, if you want
to borrow this let me know.

I also have setup called a GEEZ (I think); its a 3 axis accelorometer.
With some software to record how a run around the track looks (braking,
cornering, accel, etc). Only problem is that it only records one lap at a
time ( it was designed for autocrossers). So, kind of hard to get good use
out of it on a 20-30 minute session on a road course.

Re: Shark Drag T-shirt graphic

Lloyd Johnson

Speaking of squeaky brakes, the other day on my way into work at O dark
thirty; an econo box wanted to play, since no one was around I punched it
up. I saw a redlight coming up so I stayed in it to the last second.
Applied those great brakes, felt the ABS doing its work and came to a stop
on the line. The econo box finally caught up and went flying into the
intersection on a red light. Okay, I shouldn't have egged him on but it was
funny to see him locked up in the middle of the intersection.

Sounds good Bobby, I'll put you down for a shirt.

If your shark is up for a t-belt re-tension, I'd definitely get it
handled
soon, whether or not you decide to race. A slipped or broken belt can
really ruin your day. If I can be pushy for a second, Make the

If you are looking for squeal free brakes, the only cure I know if is to
order the Axxis (sp?) pads from 928 Specialists along with the factory
vibration dampeners. Just call over there and tell them you want squeal
free brakes, and they'll set you up with all the right stuff. If you do
get
the re-tension done prior to the drags, I hope you will possibly
reconsider
running with the squeaky brakes. I can understand if you think it will
attract a lot of unwanted attention, but at the same time I would hate

Hey, Tom.

Family station wagon? That's your 928, right? And now I find out you've
got a hot-rod Volvo! And, 0-60 in 6.5s? Did you tear out all the seats?
:-) I used to really like Volvo's monster wagons, btw.

Just you wait, though: once I get my new wheels bolted on you may just be
intimidated right off the road! Or not. I *should* be out at Driver
Skills Day trying out my new rubber at this very moment, but somehow my
wheels & tires were sent to Iowa last week. Maybe I should have called out
once a week (6 or 7 times) to remind them to use my new address.

I ordered some other goodies from DR, too, all of which got delayed due to
Kinesis' leisurely pace. Including one secret part!

Re; Coil discussions

Ralph S. Smith

Tom, the coil does effectively amplify the voltage, but it is more
complicated and it is really a just converting low voltage energy into high
voltage energy. In reality the voltage forces some sizable amount of
current through one of the coil windings which creates a magnetic field in
the core. The field is stored energy, when the current in the first winding
is stopped suddenly the energy in the field has to dissipate, go somewhere,
so it creates a HUGE voltage in a second winding which eventually ionizes
the gap between the spark plug electrodes, the rest is...well....fun. Louie
mentioned the CD ignition approach which is different in that the energy is
stored up in a capacitor (hence the name Capacitor Discharge) then dumped
suddenly into the coil. It is change in the current flow in a coil (or
transformer) that generates voltage in coils. Conservation of energy,
voltage, current, joules oh boy I am making my head hurt, anyway. Yes, I
think Accel has one although not all of them. Mallory and Fireball seem to
be available in all the autoparts places. The look distinctly different and
small, not long and round, more boxy.

Louie has a point about saturation, I also have forgotten most of the little
magnetics I learned in the first place. If the design is correct saturation
should be avoidable, although I am not sure if saturation is good or bad in
an ignition system. I believe Louie is also correct that choice of coil
would depend on the ignition control system. The reason it is attractive is
that they seem to be getting popular. The whole chrysler line uses the
Ecoil in the distributor cap don't they?

I like the E style better and was hoping to use them when the shark needs
new coils.

Re: Re; Coil discussions

Hi,
<>

I would be just a little careful if you are considering changing to a
different coil type. The Bosch ignition books I have read indicate that the
ignition systems change the coil charging rate depending on the engine rpm so
the spark doesn't fall off at the higher rpms nor use excessive current at
lower rpms. To me, this means that the coil is an integral part of the whole
ignition system. Change coils and you may end up with a poorer performing,
less reliable system than stock. Do some tests with the new style coil and
see if they really are better before the originals fail. If you have a dual
coil 928, try an E style on one side and compare spark to the other side. The
earlier 928s, I believe, would be more tolerant to an aftermarket coil than
the later dual coil more sophisticated systems. The 928 ignition system
(other than the plug wires) seems to be one of the more reliable electrical
parts of the car. Guess that's still not saying much<g>. I'd hate to damage
an ignition control module because the (improved) coil was the wrong
impedance or something.

I don't want to dampen anyone's enthusiasm for improving their car. Think
through what your goals are, do research, and weigh all the possibilities.

Louie Ott
