Re: ideas to encourage cane use for a toddler

开云体育Some people and toddlers are independent by nature, though not everyone is. I cannot tell you how many blind adults come to the center for independent living where I work and are content to not ?learn their way around a very simple building layout and prefer to travel sighted guide whenever anyone offers. I feel certain this must ?also be true for young children. Not being a professional, I will not suggest specifics, but I do encourage not over enabling both adults and children who are b/lv to believe that traveling sighted guide is the best way to travel all the time.Sheila Styron, ACTCP Blindness Low Vision Specialist II

开云体育Nothing we can do will enable a toddler to properly use a rod cane all day/every day, instead we need to solve the toddler's problem. To do that identify the toddler as not yet able to benefit from a rod cane. Therefore, since toddlers who are mobility
visually impaired and blind need mobility tools everywhere they walk, just like an adult who is blind.
Maybe ask - what tool will a toddler who is blind obtain consistent tactile path information from - all the time. all day, every day?
There are three canes now- there is the rod cane, that requires the user sweep back and forth to create an arc.
There is the rectangular cane - the user simply pushes the arc forward - much easier and very effective.
There is a belt cane - the toddler can wear her cane all the time - and learn how to feel safe and confident about exploring everywhere.

开云体育We need to stop thinking that toddlers are cognitively mature enough to understand what the consequence of their decisions are- when toddlers don't want to be in a car seat- would your advice be- well let the toddler experience a car crash- then she'll
sit in her car seat without a problem.
We are the adults, we make sure they are strapped in car seats and we need to provide toddlers who are mobility visually impaired and blind with mobility tools that actually provide them with effective path information- from which to learn confidence.

开云体育We don't need to encourage the child- we need to solve the child's problem.
To do that we need to talk about toddlers who need mobility tools for effective path information in a new way.
The toddlers you mentioned should be identified as a child who is not benefiting from a rod cane. Therefore, since toddlers who are mobility visually impaired and blind need mobility tools everywhere they walk, just like an adult. The thing to ask is -
what tool will a toddler who is blind obtain consistent tactile path information from - all the time. all day, every day?

There is the rectangular cane - the user simply pushes the arc forward - much easier and very effective.

for more information? about belt canes.

Does anyone have any suggestions to encourage a toddler to use her cane? She was using it for several weeks but has now decided that she is familiar enough walking outside with her family and doesn't need it anymore.?
Other than having her walk an unfamiliar route, does anyone have any other ideas?
Thank you

Remotely teaching street-crossing skills with APH program -- QUESTION
开云体育Hi Nanette!? I hope you don’t mind my sending this to the listservs,
as others probably have the same question.
?
To teach these advanced street-crossing skills remotely, you purchase only
one flashdrive from APH for $25, and install it on your computer or device (it
has to be Microsoft Windows compatible).
?
Then you can use it to teach as many students as you want (it will record
the progress for each of them), AND other instructors can also use it to teach
their students (their records will be recorded separately).
?
This was intended for you and the student to use it while sitting together
at your computer, but we figured out you can do it WITH your student while he or
she is safely at home, by using a program that allows them to remotely press
buttons on your computer using their keyboard.? Examples and videos of
using it are at ?
--? I suggest that you go through the training program yourself to become
familiar before using it to help you teach students.
?
The APH software / flashdrive can be bought at
?
Thanks for asking, Nanette, I hope that clears it up.?

Hi Dona, Please, if you could, explain this training to me. Do I need to purchase a flashdrive for myself and then, for every student as well? I am not clear on how it works. Thank you, Nanette ?
