Hi Folks - some of you may know Gary, but he¡¯s a long- time friend of mine who lives a few blocks away. He has been chairing a political action group since the first Trump election, and is the most engaged person I know. At any rate, he wrote a book on how to take action, a flyer for the book launch is below. We won¡¯t be back in the US for it, but I¡¯m sure it will be great! Kelly

Friends of Cricket the Cat
5
Hi Neighbors, Duncan herre from 5670 Oak Grove. Jim Clark on Chabot Road who looked after local semi -feral neighborhood fixture Cricket left for New Arizona yesterday. Unfortunately he could not take the cat so Cricket is still here doing his thing. We are trying to relocate him over to our house but Cricket is independent and does what he likes so I think he will continue roaming around making friends. For the last week or so Jim has been feeding him over at our place to help him understand that this is where a meal can be had. Cricket may have other ideas. I'm just reaching out now to ask neighbors to keep an eye one him and let me know if you see him looking like he needs some help. We'll be gone for the first part of June and will ask around for people to feed him while we are away. Please let me know if you are a friend of Cricket' and would like to join a "friends of Cricket " text group for people willing to keep an eye on this very smart and nice cat. Thanks! View this email in your browser TAKE ACTION THIS WEEK Dear Friends, EBSC strongly denounces the Trump Administration¡¯s recent termination of the Unaccompanied Children Program, causing over 26,000 children who entered the country alone to lose their legal representation. As unaccompanied minors, children are especially vulnerable to trafficking and other abuses on their journeys to the U.S. and once they arrive. Legal representation is the only thing that is preventing them from being sent back to danger and possible death. We urge Congress to stand firmly against the termination of this life-saving program and to restore due process and legal protections for unaccompanied minors. Take Action ¨C Show up TOMORROW in support of legal access for immigrant children. Attend the hearing at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET on Tuesday, April 1st at the District Court for the Northern District of California (450 Golden Gate Ave., San Francisco, California) . RSVP here or watch via Zoom here (password 426303) if you cannot attend in person. EBSC has served over 750 unaccompanied minors in the last 10 years. With our help, they are able to attain asylum, stay in school, and begin to heal. Children with access to legal counsel and support services have better outcomes with their overall immigration cases, while those without are more likely to be deported to dangerous conditions. Ultimately, this decision completely undermines due process, a basic right entitled to all humans, citizens or not. ¡°The 26,000 children whose access to counsel was slashed will be at higher risk of exploitation and trafficking and their chances of obtaining legal protection will plummet. No child should be forced to fend for themselves against a trained [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] attorney without a lawyer by their side.¡± ¨C Lindsay Toczylowski, President of Immigrant Defenders Law Center (ImmDef) Why does legal representation matter? Looking for witnesses and/or video of accident

Hi neighbors - this is a Hail Mary, but¡ our yellow Honda Fit was sideswiped while parked in front of our house at 5655 Oak Grove on 3/8 at about 4:55 PM. The driver was a young kid, who did the right thing and knocked on our door to let us know. Unfortunately, the insurance company is raising some issues of coverage and needs either witnesses or video. So, in case any of you saw it, or have ring or other video- could you please let me know? I only have pics from the next day. many thanks and I hope you all are well! warmly Kelly

Protest rally in downtown Oakland on Saturday April 5th
3
Hi neighbors, a nationwide Anti-Trump protest will be happening on Saturday April 5th . There will be a rally in downtown Oakland at Oscar Grant Plaza , 409 14th Street (formerly called Frank Ogawa Plaza) from 1-2:30. I have copied the link below, which provides info on how to register and details about the rally, in case folks haven't yet heard about this protest. The Trump administration and its sycophants want us to feel powerless and we ARE NOT!! Please consider attending the protest or if you are not able to attend, consider donating to an organization fighting this administration such as the ACLU, Indivisible or your favorite Immigrants' Rights group. Thanks for listening and for standing up. WE WILL get through this together. If folks are interested in carpooling there together, email me directly at melissamednick@.... Kind regards, Melissa. https://www.mobilize.us/indivisible/event/765229/

has broken in to last night
5
FYI OGA-ers: Last night (Friday) around 9:40pm (I wasn't here and my brother was asleep), a man jumped our back gate (I have a ring camera there) and then he smashed the back French door glass and came in. At first I didn't think he took anything bc the front ring camera shows him leaving out the front door and nothing clearly in his hands. But I looked at it a few times and on closer inspection could see what looked like a laptop under his arm. And sure enough a loner I had from San Jose State was missing from my office. I say all of this to just remind us all to do whatever you can to be safe and secure and to know these things are happening on our street. Fortunately, nothing else was taken and no one was hurt. Why I'm voting for Barbara Lee for Oakland Mayor
3
Dear Friends and Neighbors, I¡¯m voting for Barbara Lee because she is the only candidate who has the respect of all the different constituencies in Oakland that will need to work together to solve Oakland¡¯s current challenges. She has the experience, the wisdom, the gravitas, the connections, the ideas, the energy, the optimism and the determination that we need. People love her and admire her so much ¡ª and she¡¯s going to need every bit of that social and political capital that she has built up over the decades, because Oakland, like many other cities, is facing a big budget crisis and thorny problems. At a rally for her at the Grand Lake Theatre a couple of Saturdays ago, I got to hear from so many people at different levels of government who are excited about her campaign and are eager to work with her: - Alameda County Supervisor Nikki Fortunato Bas - Assemblymember Mia Bonta - Interim Oakland Mayor Kevin Jenkins, who said he gets calls from Barbara Lee at all hours with ideas and questions ¡ª he marveled at her energy and the depth of her knowledge of how Oakland works Her list of endorsements is very long and comprehensive, but what I think is remarkable that she is endorsed by every member of the Oakland City Council but one (whom she says is an old friend and she wouldn¡¯t name them!) Her main opponent professes to be proud that he is not endorsed by the City Council members, because he claims it makes him ¡°independent¡± ¡ª but he should know that isn¡¯t how things work. He served one four-year term on the City Council, with very little to show for it beyond obstruction and burnt bridges. The reality is that the mayor HAS to work with the City Council and can¡¯t go it alone. I personally feel that a guy with an MBA and so little political experience has no business running the City of Oakland, when we have a candidate with the integrity and proven leadership of Barbara Lee. I met her at a house party where she refused to take a seat and remained standing even though it was her 5th event of the day. She told the gathering about all the different sources of revenue she¡¯s working on securing - from the County, the State, from grants, from collecting fees through offices that have been deprioritized and understaffed since the pandemic -- ¡°to get Oakland the money it¡¯s due.¡± I got to shake her hand and talk to her one-on-one, and I expressed my surprise that she was willing to take on this job, and she said she has done many hard things in her life and she¡¯s ready to take on this challenge. She also told me that now that she isn¡¯t flying back and forth between Washington DC and Oakland every week the way she did for so many years (three or four days in DC; three or four days in Oakland each week), she has lots more free time to throw into this. People who say she¡¯s too old are thinking about other politicians and have not seen her in action right here and right now. She is a dynamo! Furthermore, this is only to finish out the current term. In November 2026, only 1 1/2 years from now, she will decide if she wants to keep going and we can vote on whether we want to keep her in the job. We should be so lucky! Sincerely, Jen V

Grey Missing Cat
Hi all, a few folks have stopped by the block this week to look for a missing grey cat that has been spotted a few times this week. The owner moved here from Florida and lives in the Orinda. The cat went missing, and owner thinks cat ended up here- following the owner's walking route. Cat was just spotted yesterday in front of 5668 playing with the peacock. We put out some cat kibble in the front yard to see if that entices the cat. Wanted to pass this on, thanks
