Drill debrief:

Some other facts worth noting:
1.? Although Heavy Rescue was en route to rescue Mr. Bunny from his house, we do not know if help would arrive to save Mr. Bunny's life.? In a real scenario, the chances of Heavy Rescue being available to help people like Mr. Bunny is next to nothing.

2.? Two of you did not sign up for the exercise and were not given a script to follow.? Nevertheless, my hat's off to you for showing up.? You were a big help to our Team and to OC.

3.? Part of what we do is comfort our neighbors (injured or not).? We should practice this next time.

4.? Many of you may NOT be able to physically help in a real emergency.? At least one of you will not be there for sure.? So, for those who are sure to help, expect to have less help with more to help.

5.? Food and refreshments were not taken into account during the drill since the drill only took an hour.? Imagine the work load we would have if the emergency lasted longer - say TWO WEEKS.? We should consider plans to keep ourselves hydrated and fed.? We can't help if we ourselves are out for the count.

6.? We can only organize ourselves to be as efficient as we can be.? But, nothing can replace sheer man/woman-power.? We only had 4 certified CERTs:? 2 handled the medic center and administration; 2 were hands-on.? As a gauge, CERT recommends 4 certified CERTS to perform a Search-and-Rescue at ONE structure.? We have over 250 structures in OC.? We need more certified CERTS.? Please encourage everyone you know who is WILLING and ABLE to volunteer and train to become certified CERTS.

7.? At our progress rate, we would have been able to clear all of OC in 3-4 days.? That's not fast enough when only minutes count.? Expect our Medic Center to be busier.? We will need a very big black tarp.

8.? We did not get to exercise any community administration (food/water/shelter/sanitation/etc.).??

9.? I welcome any suggestions for future drill scenarios.? I'm already working on "The Fog".? It will have similarities with the recent SC4ARES and Southcoast CERT evacuation due to potential debris flows.

Calling all Coastside CERT Amateur Radio Operators!

Half Moon Bay Amateur Radio Club Coastside SIMPLEX Exercise

The purpose of this exercise is to map out the radio frequencies that we will need to use in the event that the repeaters used on the Coastside are not available. In the event of loss of power the repeaters will eventually shut down.? Without the repeaters, we will need to have a map of SIMPLEX frequencies to allow radio communication from and between neighborhoods to the DOC.? Additionally, hams in some neighborhoods will need to know these SIMPLEX frequencies to communicate within their neighborhoods.? Depending on the number of participants, the exercise will likely take only an hour, or two.? This is an excellent opportunity for CERT ham operators to get some practice on the air and do some good work.

I strongly encourage each CERT ham to participate in this exercise if at all possible.? If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you.? I look forward to hearing you on the 20th.

2021 Simplex Exercise Intro Note.

The Half Moon Bay HAM Club will conduct a SIMPLEX communication exercise at 10:00 on February 20th. All Coastside HAM operators located between the Tunnels down to Verde Road are invited to join. Club membership is not required to participate in this exercise.

The goal is to map out a Simplex connection network we can use to maintain communications should the repeaters go down in some future event.

We will use this Registration form to work up a roster of participating stations. With that information we can supply a log sheet for scoring signal quality between all participating stations.

The exercise does require radio operation on both the UHF and VHF frequency bands. Details and directions will be sent to you when your registration is received.

Please click on the link below to be transferred to the registration web site.

Best Regards,
Lee Copeland, AJ6BN
Emergency Coordinator,
HMB Amateur Radio Club.

Use this form to register for the February 20th SIMPLEX Exercise. Results from this event will help create a SIMPLEX Communications Network Chart. This will be distributed to everyone. It will help maintain HAM communications along the Coastside should our Repeaters not be available.

Re: FEB6 Drill - All hands on deck

If you didn't receive your script for today, you can find all the scripts here:

/g/OC-CERT/files/FEB6%20Scripts

Re: FEB6 Drill - All hands on deck

Tomorrow's the big day!? I hope everyone is as excited about it as I am.? Here are some thoughts before the Big Day:

1.? You have all received your general scripts for tomorrow's drill.? Please review them carefully and email me or post here any questions.? So far, only EJ has asked questions.? Now's the time to ask.

2.? Certified-CERTs - you will be acting as leads to others.? You know what you will be expected to do.? So, please take out your CERT Field Operations Guide and review our assigned tasks before tomorrow.? It might also be good to bring the Field Operations Guide with you just in case.

3.? WT Ops and first-time volunteers - relax and go with the flow.? Don't worry, we will be available to assist you.? It's okay to be confused.? It's okay to be nervous.? That's why we conduct drills.

4.? USE YOUR WTs!? For the most part, we will be conducting this drill "virtually" due to COVID limitations. The radios are not just used to convey information between you and Net Control.? So, talk to each other.

5.? Report actual addresses.? Make up names for victims (e.g. Donald and Daisy Duck along with their nephews Huey, Louie, and Dewy).??

6.? Remember your new zones (i.e. use the OCEPT sub-neighborhood definitions).? Part of this exercise is to test the effectivity of the new sub-neighborhoods.? During the last drill, most of you covered your territories within 15 minutes!? Here are the sub-neighborhoods:
  1. WingedFoot2101:? Burning Tree / Winged Foot: 89 homes
  2. Pembroke10 and RiverOaks20: Greenbrier / River Oak / Pembroke / Inverness / Ashdown: 87 homes
  3. nobody assigned:? Cypress Point / Spyglass: 73 homes
  4. nobody assigned:? Fairway / Pinehurst: 75 homes

Re: FEB6 Drill - All hands on deck

That's good.? The location is central,? and in an actual emergency would be large enough to accommodate a number of casualties.? It's on a major roadway loop that would accomodate the largest pieces of fire apparatus, and an evac copter could even land nearby.? I'll bet Marie, who lives next door, would even open her doors to us in a real emergency...

UPDATE:

I was hoping more would participate in this exercise.? But, I have waited long enough.? The following have signed up to participate in the exercise:
Eagle353 Reuben - volunteer
Eagle368 Alex - CERT
Carnoustie127 Trish - volunteer
Pembroke10 Richard - CERT
Muirfield2 EJ (and maybe Rose) - volunteer(s)
RiverOaks20 Steve - volunteer
WingedFoot 2101 Paul - CERT and Ham
Eagle361 Dennis - CERT and Ham

That's 4 CERTs, 2 Hams, and 3 Volunteers (neither CERT-certified nor Ham).?

Not sure:
WingedFoot475 Suzie
BurningTree2320 Andrew
RiverOaks60 Mike
??? Ruth Dunn

They might not have received our emails.? If you know them, please let them know about our drill.??

I have secured the use of the main Coastside repeater and another volunteer to act as the DOC during the exercise.? It would help me greatly if you can tell me whether or not you will be mobile (on foot/bicycle/skateboard/etc) during the exercise.? Personally, I wil be setting up a station at the Rally Point (beside the 2nd hole tee box).? I will be handing out scripts to everyone by the weekend.? This is a historical event.? This will be the first ever CERT exercise conducted by Ocean Colony.? So, let's make this count.? We are still good to go for FEB6!

Some ground rules:
1.? If you're mobile, wear your mask.
2.? Volunteers will not "enter" a structure.
3.? CERTs will be busier than before.
4.? We will not be able to cover ALL of OC during the exercise.
5.? If you have a ham radio, you are welcome to listen to the chatter between OC and DOC.? But, please do not transmit.
6.? If you have a go-bag or emergency gear, prepare them.? But, you don't have to bring your gear with you during the exercise.
7.? If you have any questions, please let me know before the exercise.?
8.? If you know of other residents who wish to participate, please let me know.
9.? All residents who possess an FRS radio can tune in on CH2 and LISTEN during the exercise.
10.? Do not use your cell phones during the exercise.? We will only be using our WTs.

Stand by for more.
