Yesterday Short Solar Session

Sess.#282 1:30pm driveway Solar Filter Clear

Just a very short session from my driveway yesterday afternoon. I
used my 8" solar filter to look at the sun with my eyes. I could no
longer see the "very large" sunspot I had previously observed, but I
thought I could distinguish one sunspot on the top right side of the
solar disk.

Being careful to hold things very securely, I used my binoculars
through the solar filter (with filter in front), and was able to
confirm the sunspot I had see with my eyes, as well as two other
medium sized spots, and also half a dozen much smaller ones.

I wonder how long there will be spots visible, now that "solar max"
nears the end?

Roland,

What type of filter do you have? I have the Baader film and at
Christmas I tried to just hold it in front of ... a camcorder I think,
and the reflection off of the film overwhelmed the image through the
film. I didn't want to contact the filter with the lens shade so I gave
up.

I did manage to look through the filter naked-eye, another example of
how the eye-brain system is a superior imaging system! I haven't tried
holding it in front of binos (of course I only have a 5" filter so it
isn't large enough for both objectives anyway). I should probably just
make some filters for the binos...

Hi Rob!
What a great idea!! I think I will try and get some Baader film and make filters for my binos!! Where did you get your piece?

Ummm, just in a little hole-in-the-wall astronomy store in Vancouver
(there seem to be a few in the Vancouver area, I must have hit the
little one) that was within walking distance of my sister-in-laws (ok,
20 minutes FAST walk) so I went to browse. I was actually looking for
eyepieces (specifically Tele View, but all they had was a 55 mm
plossel), but didn't find anything that grabbed me, and I spotted the
film so I got it (rather than waste all that walking).

Actually as I recall, I had told Chris that I would like a solar filter
for the telescope as a possible Xmas present. So I got in trouble when
I bought it.

For a more useful answer: I think some people on the other OA** mailing
list mentioned (around Xmas) that they had bought some of the film from
Focus - maybe cut up rather than a full 8.5x11 sheet (which is what I
bought, so I have left over that I can do something with). I won't make
a filter for my finder because the rings on my mount are much better for
aligning on the sun (line up the shadow of the first ring on the second
ring and hocus presto sun in the centre of the eyepeice!). Otherwise
I'm sure lots of the places you can mail order from would carry it.

Just before the december partial eclipse I managed to pick up a 5x5
piece of the baader solar film from focus, total cost of the film
$5.00 so $10 max to do binos (unless they are bigger than 80mm)should
not be a heart breaker.
