Hi, I’m new to the group and in the Ottawa valley. ?Im wondering if anyone has suggestions for good places to purchase a telescope or if anyone were selling a used one. ?I think I’d like to get a dobsodian telescope so my little ones have a great experience looking at the night sky.?

Unfortunately, Focus Scientific has gone into bankruptcy.
I would recommend Astronomy?Plus () in Montreal, or as Graeme recommended, Ontario Telescopes is good as well.

I've had good results with Maison d'Astronomie in Montreal.
As for buying a used telelscope, it takes a lot of knowledge to
evaluate a used telescope. Unless you have an experienced friend to
help you, I suggest not buying used.
Instead, I suggest joining the Ottawa Centre of the Royal
Astronomical Society because they have a telescope lending library.
They have several small telesclopes, of different types, that they
rent to members for $10 a month. That's the cheapest way to try out
several telescopes so see what you like.
If covid ever ends and local clubs resume public star parties (our
word for inviting the public to look through our telescopes), I
suggest attending such and looking through every scope to help you
decide what you want. There are many kinds of telescope and one
telescope cannot do it all. And the price range is crazy from
CAD$10.00 to US$150,000.00. That that's just the ones I could order
from canada over the web.

ps. Too bad about Focus. I hope Tristan lands in a good place. He was
always helpful and respectful to his customers. I've heard that the
bankrupcy of Focus was triggered by the onwer's (Kent's) dementia. But
consider that to be an unverfied rumour.

Ok. That’s too bad. Their website says “Moved to merivale”, but sounds like that was the early sign of impending problem. Sad - especially since, apparently, many more people have been taking up hobbies during the pandemic. Maybe the supply chain shortages we’ve heard about were part of the problem.

Back to the original topic: buying a scope by someone new to astronomy. A very clever, but new to astronomy, friend of mine came up with a new covid-approprate way of getting a scope. He ordered online from a canadian supplier with a very liberal return policy. He bought a small scope on sale. He immediately figured out it was crap (as is usually the case with lowest-priced retail telescopes) and returned it. Then he bought another ... and returned it. He is on his third telescope. He moved up from a $200 scope to a $1000 scope in a few weeks. He is now happy with his 8 inch schmidt. This story points out that it is very difficult for a person new to astronomy to buy a scope through the internet that they will actually like and the why the first choice is almost always not the best one choice. However, if you're willing to do multiple returns (and if the store allows such with free return shipping) it can work. I bought my first telescope when I was 13 from Kent when Focus was on Rideau street. It was many years later that I finally got to kiss a girl!

I was out of work for 3 months, but then got hired on December 24 2021 as an apprentice electrician.? I began work January 4 2022.
Lots of hard work, but it's right up my alley.? I've been working numerous commercial projects, and service requests. Whole-floor refits with the latest lighting, switching and BAS technology (building automation and management), installation of new downwards-firing lighting, and so much more.? Even got to help stabilize an apartment's electrical after a kitchen fire (melted wires).? It's been pretty exciting, and lots of opportunity to both learn, and put my existing knowledge to good use.
I certainly miss Focus Scientific, and all the great people I met over the last 28 years. I am trying to stay in touch with many of the people I met, but there's literally thousands of people from all over Canada and some in the US.
I can't really talk about what happened at Focus Scientific with respect to Kent at this time.? I visit Kent at the long-term care home; I'm one of his two designated caregivers.? I owe Kent so much, he provided me with a great career, friendship, and trust.? He's doing well.? Now that it's getting warmer out, I hope to take him for walks around the outside of the long-term care home.? I wish I could take him out on field trips, but that's not up to me.? I managed to acquire a bookshelf stereo for him, so he cal fill his days with music and news.? My dad, some of my friends and some of his friends donated various music CD's and cassettes for him, including The Rolling Stones which he loves.? I loaned him my Nikon compact binocular so he can look at the birds, squirrels, chipmunks, and anything else he finds interesting.? Unfortunately his room faces North and he doesn't get a view of The Moon.
I really don't know what else to say.? Tariq, Glenn, Nathan and I are all pretty depressed over what happened, and wished things could have played out differently.

I'll try to come out to some of the up-coming star parties.? I was contemplating visiting the gang at Chapters in the east end on International Astronomy Day.? Now that I have Saturdays off, I can actually come out and talk with everyone.? So many people I miss talking with.
