It's Janice here, at 9 pm. Just got a call from Roland, who is at the
Petrocan in Almonte.

He reports that the skies are clear from horizon to horizon, with a
bit of ground haze that is dissipating. As soon as Bruce arrives at
the Petrocan, they'll be heading out to FLO for some long-overdue
observing!

Clear skies...west of Ottawa!

Right! OK, so we've established that the idea of observing tonite is
less nutty than a fruitcake -- good first step. I'll begin packing
the van just in case:

a) it does actually clear and
b) someone else is interested in joining me there if it does

That sounds just great! If you do manage to get some free publicity
for that kind of event, perhaps we should offer some kind of rain date
to be publicized for that event as well. Good going!

I found the semi-dark site of Almonte (mag.4.5) to be much more
satisfying than a shopping mall site (mag.1.2), so the idea of a park
is particularly appealing.

Sounds like fun - schedules permitting, count me it!

There are big sections of blue sky. All of the clouds are broken cumulus.
There is no cirrus. There is a low haze as well. But the clouds are
moving very quickly. I think the cumulus will evaporate.

Hi all!

I spoke with someone I know at the Perth newspaper today and mentioned that at some point we would like to do a public astronomy night for the town of Perth so he said since no company was involved they would be willing to do a free public announcement in the paper to let people know!
I thought a good spot would be in Conlon park which is just west of Perth in a collection of soccer fields and a clear unpolluted view to the west and south, also its close enought that people could easily drive there from anywhere in Perth. I think the owners of the park would be willing to turn off all lights for the occasion!
This type of event would also do a lot to raise awareness of light pollution issues, I'll keep you all posted on this as I get more details, I'm sure we could get several 100 people to come out for this!

It is now 100% cloud cover here in Orleans at 6:38pm. I need someone
who can tell me if it looks clear or like clearing out in the West

ONLY IF IT DOES GET CLEAR ;-) I would certainly consider a drive out
to FLO - though it would probably be a good idea not to go alone, as
the last 500 ft of the small entrance Road might be fairly muddy. I
would want to leave my home no later than 7:30pm. If anyone hasn't
been there yet, I could post directions as I did last time, and I
could meet up with people at the Petro-Can in Almonte.

Let me know ASAP if the weather's looking clear out there and/or if
you are interested. I will decide if I am going or not at 7:30pm,
though I gotta say, it don't look too good at this very moment.

My gosh, you're right - it looks down right blueish out there. The sky
that is. Let me get home and I'll check the usual suspects to see what
is forecast (which you've probably already done) and I'll look back here

our hobby - to this I agree with all my heart. Personally my hobby
is astronomy (astrophotography) not sidewalk astronomy. Anything and
everything in moderation...

For sidewalk stuff, zero interest is exactly as perfect as 3+/month.
The purpose, I believe, is for each to do whatever astronomy's ok for
you, and perhaps to share whatever that is with friends from time to
time. Relaxed, easy, natural...

month, I would either say: "6 or more times per month" or even "as
much as the weather permits". That's what my observing logbook
reflects.

If some of us, from time to time, use a poll as a means to have a

Have you ever seen or heard a Photon and enjoyed it? That's all
that's required here, isn't it... You're among astro-amigos who are

NIce poll. ONe thought....I think that sidewalk astronomy is
seasonal. Short of going "out with the Scouts", the late nightfall
makes summer sidewalking difficult. The winter, on the other hand,
is perfect. A few hours with the planets, a few ohmygods!!! Does it
for me.

I don't believe that it is our intention to be a dedicated sidewalk astronomy group. I know that this wouldn't do it for me. I like sidewald astro., but nothing compares with a REAL dark site, viewing the faint fuzzies with friends or doing a bit of astro photography (I have yet to move beyond piggyback- what a chicken!). I guess what I am trying to say is that we are trying just to have fun. All "members" are really just a group of friends who share a hobby, and you are right that certain people's need to have more structure in the other group led to the OAFs. You will see this as time goes on....no tee-shirts, no posters, no balloons, etc. etc. I will be very happy to share astro-photos with you this summer, and hopefully learn some tricks from you.

Actually, one of my unstated goals in this sessions and my prior
one in Almonte is to get more grass roots interest in astronomy and more

to get the local municipality to adopt some form of public lighting
standards. Grass roots support on the issue translates to a more
responsive municipal council.

With help from Hilderic and Pat Browne we plan to start the process
with the municipality shortly. I'm currently doing a bit of background
homework that has been delayed a bit by other commitments. In this
politicing game it is worth taking a bit longer and doing it right rather
than doing it quick and dirty and probably having your request ignored
or shot down.

I'm disinclined to get involved in municipal politcs myself. But
I'm happy to support other peoples sidewalk astronomy sessions.

I understand your reluctance about politics, but I do appreciate your
support on the sidewalk.
