Eclipse Glasses recommendation
Hi Folks, I'm looking for recommendations from a reliable (aka safe) source.? I'll be heading down to Malone NY for the eclipse no matter the weather as I'll be combining two things I love:? astro and fly fishing.? I can't wait to see if the bite is on during totality. Cheers, Albert. |
Anyone have a Nexstar-GPS mount with the "GPS Align" feature?
The earlier shipments of the Celestron Nexstar-GPS mounts
included a "GPS align" feature, whereby one just pointed the mount North, turned it on, and it would self-align for the night. This feature got removed in later handset firmware, due to Celestron losing a lawsuit to Meade regarding that feature. Does anyone here in the Ottawa area still have a Nexstar-GPS with that feature? A downside of the older firmware with that feature, is that it suffers from a "GPS roll-over" bug, requiring that the operator enter the current date by hand. A hobby of mine is building electronic accessories for Celestron mounts, which one can discover by going to I suspect the "GPS rollover" bug can be corrected by inserting one of these devices between the Celestron hand-controller and the mount. But I don't have that mount, so no way to learn more about the issue, and have it implement a workaround. If anyone reading does have that version of the Nexstar-GPS, then please get in touch. Re: Excellent Geminids about to peak!
开云体育Hi Folks, My son-in-law went outside last night in Wynyard, SK to check on the meteors but the sky was too bright to see many of them. Have a great day. This is a cell phone image. Bob |

开云体育Enjoy the Geminids Pierre and Raymond!?I will be setting up tonight in town and will be in the lookout for them, as well as other sites from my vantage point! Hope the weather holds out for us! Jim On Dec 12, 2023, at 10:11?PM, Pierre Martin <pmartin@...> wrote:

Re: Two images of M45 taken one year apart.
Hi Greg!
Wonderful images showing very different characteristics. The rendering in the first image allows the nebulousity (sp) to come through for greater affect. The second image has far more data with the gas clouds coming through more strongly. The image field between the two images does influences what we see. I prefer the first image for the richness of the nebulousity but I am intrigued/surprised by the amount of dust cloud exposed in the second image that apparently exists around this open cluster. Well done!! Cheers, Chris. |
Re: APOD
There was a LOT of criticism from actual astrophotographers on this image as it is mostly photoshop art. If it had been presented as such specifically stating that its a composite it would have been better. APOD has had more than its share of this sort of thing as the people that do the selection are not imagers themselves, it reflects kind of poorly on NASA to have their name associated with it! This sort of thing happens all the time now with regular terrestrial photos as well, you can edit in fake sky backgrounds and all kind of AI stuff, its then passed off as the real thing and they get annoyed when its pointed out to them!! 开云体育Very cool. ?It wouldn’t be nearly as interesting if the features of the moon hadn’t been enhanced or if the sunstar effect wasn’t present. ?Astrophotography is a bit of a mix of both science and art.GAS Greg Schneider, D.M.A.

Re: 2023 Solar annular eclipse
开云体育Sebastian,You are making me homesick! ?We moved to Ottawa from Los Alamos, NM, just a bit north of Cochiti Lake, back in 2018. ?I know Cochiti Lake well. ?Ironically, when we lived in NM the astronomy bug lay dormant in me. ?It wasn’t until last year that I renewed my interest in the skies and now I am lamenting the amazing skies that I left behind in the mountains of NM. ?I had contemplated going back to view the eclipse in my old stomping grounds of NM, but I have family in San Antonio, TX - and therefore a place to stay and use of a car while there - which tipped the scales towards the Lone Star State. ?I was trying out a new Hydrogen-alpha scope, but purely in visual mode so I have no pictures to share. ?However, your images look very similar to what I saw. Thanks for bringing a smile to my face. ?I hope you had the opportunity to eat some chiles while you were there. ? Greg Schneider, D.M.A.

Sorry for being a little late with these.? ?These were taken at Cochiti Lake in NM, a little off the center path of totality.? Taken with Sigma 150-600mm DG HSM at 600mm and Canon R6.? Also, sorry about the too small file size.? I can upload larger files when I finally drive back to Ottawa :). |
