Fw: [elchorro] Rally to demand more classes, etc. at City College of San Francisco on October 24 at 5:00

David ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Rick Baum <rickbaum@...> Date: Sun, Oct 20, 2024 at 12:00 PM Subject: [elchorro] Rally to demand more classes, etc. at City College of San Francisco on October 24 at 5:00 To: CPFA listserve <elchorro@...> Here is an email I have sent out to let people know about a rally that will be happening at City College of San Francisco. At your college, you may be dealing with comparable or similar issues. Greetings: City College of San Francisco HEAT (CCSFHEAT.org) has called a rally on October 24 at 5:00 outside the MUB building by Frida Kahlo Way on the Ocean Campus. Attached is our rally flyer with our demands for more classes, for the building of the voter approved theatre (PAEC), and for the parking needs of students to be addressed. Certainly, these are not the only concerns—the mayor is threatening to reduce agreed to funding for Free City. We see our campaign as one in favor of greater resources being devoted to public education and not squandered on enabling billionaires to accumulate more wealth and the military. We hope you can attend and spread the word. Two flyers are attached—one includes contact information for the chancellor and the board. The second publicizes the rally. Other resources: CCSF HEAT’s website (CCSFHEAT.org) One minute video promoting the rally at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-hNmm3_X1I 48 Hills article on denial of education opportunities at CCSF: https://48hills.org/2024/09/city-college-is-depriving-students-of-educational-opportunities/ For background information: Steve Zeltzer interview of faculty member Rick Baum: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYPbj4tGLfE CCSF’s current interim chancellor has stated that school employees should focus on what is best for students. He closed his flex day address on October 15 saying, “Make sure we are serving our students and community the best we can.” Yet, he must have been aware of the hundreds, if not thousands, of students who could not enroll in classes in the fall resulting from too few classes being scheduled. He did nothing about this problem. He could have addressed it by drawing on the millions stashed away in the college’s reserve account that is beyond legal requirements. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Elchorro" group. Fw: 2024 CA For All Public Comments
Hi everyone, Here is the comment I posted at the California for ALL Ages and Abilities Day of Action on October 8. Come to the Older Adults Education Forever (OAEF) October meeting today, Sunday, October 13, and learn how other OAEF members participated in this event and what they learned. The general meeting begins at 2:00 PM. Here is the link: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/87591299469?pwd=RqXr8MX2Nxlg9pl7nC5ebQ3YaJYvua.1 Meeting ID: 875 9129 9469 Passcode: 761146Kristen Pursley ----- Forwarded Message ----- From: CA for ALL Ages & Abilities <info@...> To: "kpursley@..." <kpursley@...> Sent: Tuesday, October 8, 2024 at 11:12:01 AM PDT Subject: 2024 CA For All Public Comments 2024 CA For All Public Comments Thank you Kristen Pursley for your comments! Your response is important to us and will help us make improvements for future events. Your Comments: So much information available today! Thank you! I do want to mention that educational opportunities for people as they age are so important. I am with an organization, Older Adults Education Forever, that supports teachers and students in older adults programs in adult school and community college settings. Our older adult students have made it very clear how vital these programs are for them. Unfortunately, older adults education programs are very unequally distributed in California. A few areas have strong programs, but in most areas affordable education opportunities especially designed for seniors are disappearing or gone. California used to offer free classes for older adults through its adult school system, but the state defunded these programs in 2013. Community colleges can still offer free educational opportunities for older adults, funded by the state. But policy pressures on community colleges are causing many to cut back or eliminate classes for older adults, if they ever had them. In order to really create a California for all ages and abilities, the state should consider restoring older adults programs through adult schools and encouraging community colleges to maintain and expand their older adults programs. Educational opportunities advance many of the aims of the Master Plan: combatting isolation, reducing the incidence of dementia, providing seniors with a supportive community and a way to get much-needed information. Educational opportunities for seniors are a "missing piece" of the Master Plan. Including education would help the plan come to fruition in so many ways. Discharge Petition is filed TODAY! It's an "all hands on deck" moment for our repeal efforts! View this email in your browser ** All Hands on Deck! ** H.R. 82 Discharge Petition Support Needed Today Representatives Graves and Spanberger are scheduled to file a bipartisan discharge petition for H.R. 82, the legislation that would repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). Now we need our Representatives to sign the discharge petition IN PERSON. Though we can’t provide a pre-loaded email since the message needs to go to your personal Representative, we have included a message to copy and paste and step-by-step instructions. Time IS NOT on our side ... we need to reach 218 petition co-signers ASAP. Please call or email TODAY! Thank you for your continued efforts on this critical issue. Steps to Contact Your Representative: Find Your Representative: Go to House.gov and enter your ZIP code to locate your Representative. H.R. 82 has gained strong bipartisan support with 326 co-sponsors. Congressman Garret Graves (R-LA) and Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) are jointly filing a bipartisan discharge petition to move this bill forward. This united effort is a testament to the power of bipartisan collaboration in addressing the issues of the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). Whether or not you have cosponsored H.R. 82, you must recognize the importance of repealing the WEP and GPO. These penalties are a gross injustice to retired American workers and their spouses. Our elected Representatives must be fully informed and prepared to take decisive action by signing the discharge petition on September 10th, the very first day it is available. As my Representative, it is imperative that you sign this petition in person on the House floor ASAP. If you have not co-sponsored H.R. 82, I request you sign the discharge petition. Hi Folks, The CAEP - California Adult Education Program - oversees the delivery of Adult Ed in California. Here's a link to info about the CAEP Summit - to be held Oct 28-30 in Oakland. Here's a link to the new Advocacy page on the OAEF website. On the Advocacy page, you will find * link to my google doc on Advocacy for Adult Ed * the endorsements we voted on at today's meeting Attached is a screenshot from our meeting. I'm not super happy with it - maybe we can try again. Also, I used a program new to me to add the text - not satisfied with that, either! But I try to never let the perfect be the enemy of the good. We definitely should get more photos in future - either on zoom or out in the field. And it would be wonderful if we had buttons! Sincerely, Cynthia

KALW radio program on aging this week
Hi everyone, Harry Bernstein sent this message about a radio program about seniors, running only this week, every day at 11:30 AM. Information is below. Kristen This week, on radio station KALW (91.7 FM or also available online)-- The name of the program is Bay Made, daily at 11:30 a.m., but the topic below is just this week, since the programs change regularly. The program this week is about seniors and is called Not born yesterday, a broadcast about aging, produced in SF (it is about older adults, "about the challenges and joys of aging"). Someone from OAEF could be a worthwhile guest for them. today's program featured Dr. [John Richard?] Restak, an author on memory. Past programs should be accessible as well.
