Hi Folks, I've started a list of providers of older adults education and engagement. If you have groups to add, please respond. These groups do not necessarily share funding nor do all their goals and interests align - but they all care about and serve elders and in that way, they are potential allies for our work. As always in advocacy and politics, you don't need to agree on everything to work together for good outcome. You need shared interests leading to shared goals and strategies to reach them. Giving all parties voice in the process to come to agreement on those shared items helps move things along. A list of folks with shared interests is very helpful when you are looking for signatures on letters or backers of legislation. Here is the link to the list. Cynthia

Dear OAEF Forum I was listening to the KQED radio show Forum today (9-10 and 10-11 AM)— the second hour was about AI and its uses in teaching and tutoring. The guest was Mr. Kahn, founder of Kahn Academy (tutoring for younger students). They just had a call-in from a school music teacher who uses AI as a tool to help her students! I was just wondering, how could AI be used to teach older adults how to make better use of their computers and cell phones? But would older adults who aren’t computer literate be able to access an AI tutoring program, in order to benefit from a lesson on the subject they want to learn? Would they even know what subject they should be looking up (unless it is something simple like “send an email to my grand-daughter” or “find ukulele tutorials”). The show repeats tonight on the local Bay Area radio station KQED (maybe 9 PM) — and we should be able to get a podcast of it on KQED online, once the humans do the editing and post it! Linda C. One's income, race, disability, and state of residence all impact access to oral health and oral health outcomes. This is because oral health coverage is not universal and even where coverage is available, older adults and people with disabilities face unique barriers to accessing care to improve their oral health. The inclusion of oral health services in Medicaid Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) waivers could help to address these disparities and improve oral health outcomes for older adults and people with disabilities. This webinar, Improving Access to Oral Health Through Medicaid HCBS Waivers, will provide an overview of oral health coverage for older adults and people with disabilities, why oral health is so critical to overall health, and the barriers these populations face in accessing oral health care. Hi Folks Emma Gallegos is a reporter for Edsource - https://edsource.org/author/egallegos I suggest someone reach out to her to invite her to the OAEF Forum -- with follow up reach outs about covering the issue of OA in CA Adult Ed. In the past, Sue Frey was reporter (now retired) for Edsource and some of us had a good connection with her - which led to coverage of advocacy efforts. Edsource is wonky journal with political impact. If we can reach them and get coverage by them, it will help. Cynthia

Thinking about Edsource - and the "reformation" that got us here --- I found this article: https://edsource.org/2014/edsource-symposium-to-tackle-seminal-public-school-reforms/63530 There's nothing mentioned about AE in the article - but lots in the comments. That's how it so often went --- lots of talk about reform -- why it was so "exciting" and important etc. etc. --- but very little talk of Adult Ed -- which was the branch MOST ALTERED by the "reformation" of Public Ed in CA in the wake of the Financial Meltdown. I will NEVER forgive and forget the elimination of State funding for Financial Literacy in Adult Education. So many people were devastated by the Financial crisis of 2008-09. People lost homes, jobs, etc. State response - eliminate free classes that help people navigate, understand, and plan for the inevitable ups and downs of economic life. Sigh --- Okay --- just had to add! So many memories! Not all of them good! But this advocacy work is how I met wonderful folks like Kristen! And why I ended up learning about and running social media for school and advocacy purposes. Cyn

Educators Organizations and agencies that support seniors Elected officials and candidates (there will be a time for them to make brief statements around 11:15) Older adult students and would-be students Anyone you think would be interested.
