OAEF T-shirt Pics for 2 #AEFLweek2023
Hi OAEF! It's Adult Ed Family Literacy week! If you search on social media for #AEFLweek2023, you will see a variety of posts - some focusing on work, some on families. Nationally, there is a big variety. I took these pics of me and my mom wearing our new OAEF t-shirts. I plan to post the one with the hashtag on it tomorrow. Feel free to use for your own post if you don't have any pics of yourself wearing your own OAEF t-shirt! Maybe some time in the future, we can get some group pics in our t-shirts. Or if you have taken a pic of yourself in your shirt and feel comfortable, share it here so that we can put it on our website or post on social media. I'll post my pic tomorrow on Facebook and LinkedIn. Cynthia

Digital Equity for Elders --- attention, Steve L!
Hi OAEF - and special attention, Steve Lipson! This week, I attended the online portion of the AAACE conference (I presented on Adult Ed Sustainability) Hyewon Park of the Community Tech Network presented on Digital Equity for Seniors. She has given me permission to share her presentation with OAEF. CTN will publish their research in a few weeks and then provide a white paper. https://communitytechnetwork.org/ -- Community Tech Network - located in San Francisco. I think CTN could be an important ally in our work. Steve, want to take a look at all this and share your thoughts? And let me know if you want contact info for Hyewon. Sincerely, Cynthia

Longevity Report
Hi OAEF Here's an article - https://www.statnews.com/2023/09/14/hispanic-paradox-life-expectancy-research/ that essentially acknowledges that cultures that are more collective - the focus here in Latino cultures -- have more longevity. I think in terms of our work, we can make the case that where collective/cultural/family support is lacking, OA classes make important contributions. Traditionally, most human cultures centered on caregiving. But as we know, that has been lost in many cultures - and it's definitely been lost in ours - meaning US culture - to greater or smaller degrees. I grew up in Southern California. You might have heard of Leisure World - a senior community in So Cal. When they designed it, they didn't plan on folks living as long as they did once they moved in. The trouble was, they created a strong community -- and that led to people to living longer - which meant less real estate turnover - not good for the folks who built LW but good for the people. Community and connection are the secret to so much. Cynthia

CCAE's next steps on reach out to electeds
Hi OAEF, As you recall, we in OAEF wrote our own letter to electeds - and LAO (Leg Analyst Office) and DOF (Dept of Finance) --- about the current re-assessment of the Adult Ed System. CCAE was first to do so and we patterned after them - emphasizing the need to refund OA classes. https://www.ccaestate.org/communicator/legislative-update-on-the-funding-model-workgroup-meeting-in-july-is-now-available --- updates you on what CCAE's next steps are --- as well as provides some info that this assessment of AE will probably be slow as the state of CA has a lot on its plate that takes precedence. I think it's important to read so please take the time to do so. Also, if you recognize any names in there --- especially if they are in your area -- you could make contact with them. Angela Taylor, director of San Mateo - one of the few remaining adult schools to have OA class - is on the CCAE group working on all this. Sincerely, Cynthia

COABE partnering with AARP
Hi Folks, Update on national picture --- COABE - national org serving Adult Ed --- is partnering with AARP to offer classes to older adults. This is a pilot program. When advocating for a return to CA State funding for OA classes in CA, we can point out that on the national level, folks see the wisdom in offering and funding these important programs. More info below from Sharon Bonney's post - Sharon is head of COABE We had a great virtual meeting today with our Coalition on Adult Basic Education AARP Foundation Work For Yourself@50+ pilot programs! AARP Foundation¡¯s Work for Yourself@50+ program helps low-income older adults navigate self-employment opportunities. For many, entrepreneurship after age 50 is a necessity ¡ª a way to generate income when traditional job opportunities are scarce and the value of retirement savings has declined. Older adults with limited income can benefit from the new ¡°gig economy,¡± but it¡¯s not easy to find trustworthy information. Here's to our pilot programs that are ramping up to do great work in this space: 1. Southside Virginia Community College, Leslie Bradner 2. Baton Rouge Community College, Dava Prince 3. Northshore Technical Community College, Errick L. Baldwin, M.A. 4. Project Learn of Summit County, Paul Crosby 5. YWCA National Capitol Area, Aleathia Adams 6. Houston Community College, Office of Entrepreneurial Initiatives, Maya Durnovo 7. The Lucas Center at the College of Coastal Georgia, Ande Noktes 8. Adult Education Center, Gloria Taylor-Spruce 9. Palo Verde College, Jaclyn Randall and Alejandro Clark 10. Buffalo Public Schools, Reggie Garner Learn more about this exciting initiative: https://coabe.org/aarp/ #EntrepreneurshipForSeniors #AARPFoundation #WorkForYourself50+ #COABE #Seniors #AdultEducation Julie Knack

Many older adults depend on community service providers for necessities and psychosocial support. However, these crucial services may be disrupted during disaster, impacting older adults in your community. This workshop prepares organizations that provide critical support services to older adults. The webinar will discuss continuity of operations, preparedness planning for older adults, disaster mental health issues and case studies. Who should attend? The whole community, workplace management, family members and other care givers, federal, state and local agencies, community and faith-based organizations.

Sharing the OAEF letter on Social Media
Hi OAEF Folks, I posted the letter we wrote to the AEM (Adult Education Matters) blog. Here is a link to the post: https://adulteducationmatters.blogspot.com/2023/08/adult-education-funding-concerns-from.html You can now easily share the letter on your social media by copying and pasting that link to your social media. When you click "post," it will show up with an image - our logo that was used on the t-shirts. Strongly suggest: In addition to copying and pasting, add some test such as "OAEF speaks up about the value of Older Adults Classes and the importance of including them in State of CA budget for Adult Education. Read the letter to learn more." Add hashtags: #OAEF #OlderAdultsAdultEducation #AdultEducationMatters You can "tag in" an elected official. To do this, you'll need to find the elected official on the form of social media you're using - Facebook, Instagram, Twitter (X), etc. Copy and paste their "address" from social media. For example, here is Assembly Kevin McCarty on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AsmKevinMcCarty Use the @ sign to tag someone in. IMPORTANT: If you "tag in" someone, they will know you are tagging them in - so make sure it's win-win. Example, @KevinMcCarty has shown strong support of Adult Education. We know that he will understand why Older Adults classes are important to include in the budget for #AdultEducation. Especially if an elected has done something good, you want to tag them in on social. This gives them credit and attention for doing good things - their "followers" on social will see it (if they have set up their social that way). I could blather on much longer - but that's why I gave the presentation on social media last summer! I hope this will help you. Maybe I can explain more at a future meeting. Cynthia

Questions for candidates about Older Adults education
Hi everyone, As promised at our Older Adults Education Forever meeting, I am sending the list of questions about educational opportunities for Older Adults we have compiled for unions and other organizations to ask candidates who are seeking endorsements. Organizations that support state funded educational opportunities for adults over 55 can use these questions to raise awareness of the issue in candidates and help select candidates who will support education for older adults when they get into office. August 15, 1-2:30 PM, Tim Redmond, the foremost SF political reporter shares his thoughts. Progressives and moderates both have reason to worry about their respective political futures in SF. In the recent past, progressives have suffered several defeats and that trend could continue without a galvanizing, countervailing force. ¡°Moderate" Mayor Breed is seen as ineffective, so she's vulnerable to a challenge in next year¡¯s race for SF mayor.
