Hi everyone,
AB11 (Fong) goes before the California Senate Education Committee on July 12, and it needs our support. This bill would allow students to repeat community college courses they need to graduate.? The current laws which disallow repetition create a barrier, especially for ESL students, first generation students and adult learners.? A sample letter and contact information for the committee appears below. Please share this widely. Let's get the word out. Kristen

Donna's message plus... To start off--
Here is part of what CFT President Jeffrey Freitas wrote last month when the measure (AB-811) was about to come before the Assembly Appropriations committee. (I may have sent this to you previously.):
>? ?Under the current law many students are not allowed to repeat courses that support matriculation to next level courses and/or support skill acquisition needed to successfully transfer or build careers.Restrictions on repeatability have reduced the options for students in the arts, world languages, kinesiology, and ESL, which disenfranchised many learners in the community and had disproportionate impacts on students who may not have had access to skill-based courses in high school. Repetition allows students to retake courses for a passing grade and?these restrictions created barriers to success for a diverse range of students, especially first generation college students and?adult learners. Repealing these restrictions will restore access to higher education and expand opportunities for all Californians, including first-generation college students, immigrants, second language learners, and all students seeking to become better educated... Good thinking Sue.
It can be short and sweet since it is the numbers of emails that count to every staffer.
Dear ___________, I am writing to urge Senator ____________ to support AB 811. This bill would allow our students to increase their skills in language, athletics, all the arts and music, by allowing up to 3 repeats of a course. Not only does it allow for increasing skills, but it provides students with the opportunity?to have a more well-rounded arts education. Not only will these courses help students as they embark on their lives and careers post college,?but they tend?to be the very courses our older?citizens and lifelong learners want. The education AB811 will promote are the courses that reduce stress and encourage creativity so important in our ever changing world.?
Thanks for the support, ____________________

Hi Linda, In case I am not allowed to send to these two groups, I am sending to you to disperse, please.
Thank you all so much for your advocacy and?for including other?faculty! This bill will assist older adults who want to take and retake courses in the arts, languages,PE. memoir writing, etc. Sometimes people find it easier to have a template to cut and paste. If any of the following resonates?with you, please feel free to use and or tweak it to suit. Then send it off to:
"As a proud faculty member of the California Community Colleges, I am writing to request that you support AB 811 (Fong). If passed, this bill would help close the opportunity gaps present in education by providing consistent access for students to engage in courses, as well as additional opportunities to achieve better academic outcomes. This bill is an important recommitment to the promise of community colleges as ¡°open access institutions¡±.
Approximately 62% of community college students are part-time. As a result, these students frequently have responsibilities outside of school that require their attention, which may hinder their ability to succeed in specific courses. AB 811 would allow these students to retake courses in which they have previously received a poor grade up to 5 times and up to 3 times for courses in which they received a satisfactory grade. It is important to pass legislation that reaffirms the importance of supporting nontraditional students¨C a significant population that the California Community Colleges serve.
AB 811 also recognizes the importance of allowing students to retake courses for enrichment and skill-building purposes. Specifically, this bill would positively impact enrollment in the arts, languages, and physical education courses.? AB 811 would cement these opportunities and increase the accessibility of higher education to students who disproportionately face barriers. It also reinforces the importance of all disciplines of study and contributes to a thriving educational environment.
Thus, I strongly encourage you to vote AYE on AB 811."
