Re: Reviews of the Nikon Z6, Z7 vs. Canon EOS R6 Mkii ?

.... thanks for the Refs:

?** { See Below } ? Seems like one of your reviewers has no trouble recommending the Canon EOS R6 : ( what does he thing of the Canon R6 mk ii ?? )?

?A question :
? How might an Old Nikon glass, manual Prime ED-IF 300mm f/2.8? lens preform on either of the Canon EOS R6 mk ii? or the Nikon Z6 ??
( using? inexpensive cheap adapters available on eBay )? ....

--? --
**??

"? Final Words

The Canon R6 is a really solid camera. I have no trouble at all recommending it.?R users are going to be jealous of this new camera, despite the loss of pixel count. 5D-loving DSLR users are going to take right to the R6 (and the higher end R5). The R6 is as DSLR-like as any mirrorless camera to date, yet manages to add in all the reasons why mirrorless is the future.

&

One small issue that can't be ignored with the R6 is its price versus its competitors. While there are things the Canon R6 does better than the Nikon Z6 (and upcoming Z6 II) or Sony A7 Mark III, there are also areas where it's only equal or just a touch behind. Yet this is coming at a US$500 extra cost over the competition at current pricing. That extra cost is going to deter a few customers who should really be considering the R6, I think. I'd say don't fall into that mentality, but that's still a 20% tithe to Canon you need to rationalize.?

Personally, I'm going to switch some of the camera recommendations I've been making to photographers asking for advice over to the Canon R6. Particularly if you're coming from the Canon DSLR world, the R6 is the enthusiast camera you probably want (and the R5 is the one you crave). For someone new to photography or looking to buy their first sophisticated camera, the R6 probably gets my nod as the camera of choice for some of those folk, too.?

The 20-24mp full frame mirrorless market is one of considerable choice now: R6, Z5, Z6, Z6 II, S1, S5, A7 Mark III. Canon came out firing with the R6, and I think they're going to steal some of Sony's thunder with it. Game on, boys.?

I agree with Kelly¡¯s statement about Ken Rockwell.

I encountered his website back in 2009 and after a little bit of reading reviews that seemed more like regurgitated sales brochures and no real use cases, I refused to go back. I suspect some of his postings are slanted by who pays him the most, just a theory.

?

Being that you said reviewers and listed just 3 web pages all on the same site by the same person is not enough of a set of data points to come to any conclusion other than one persons opinion.?

?

If you want a good perspective, look for Thom Hogans websites. He has a wealth of knowledge and doesn¡¯t pull punches. His guides and reviews go into decent depth.? He has a website dedicated to mirrorless and one for the Z series camera¡¯s. I will state that yes, this is one persons site as well, but Thom doesn¡¯t have the negative reputation that Ken has.

Some 8x10 prints in a binder with flip pages. The alt pro prints are loose since they are 12x19 inches or larger
Of course with electrons, they are all the same size

Okay, that is the line I was heading down. Is the printed mainly 8x10's?

I was thinking of a binder with separator pages for different subjects so that you could flip to an area of interest without having to go page by page.

Re: Portrait lens

I¡¯d never even considered using the 200mm f/2 for a portraiture. ?You¡¯ll need a fair amount of distance from the subject, but that¡¯s got to be some sweet DOF, and really isolate the subject. ?Sorry to hear about the motor, that can¡¯t be an easy lense to get fixed. ?I think I¡¯ve only ever seen one copy for sale.

A further note on the 105mm. ?I¡¯d avoided buying the 105mm f/2.8G VR, as the common wisdom on this list has always been that the 2.8D is the sharper lens. Last year I got a chance to pick one up for almost nothing. ?I¡¯m glad I did. ?That VR is handy.

Now that I've switched to mirrorless, the Z-mount 70-200 is even sharper than its predecessors so it continues to fill that role. In a recent development, the focusing motor on my 200/2 has finally died and I haven't found anyone with parts to fix it. So it looks like I suddenly have a fantastic manual focus lens which is not something I really want. :-/

I'm currently fighting the temptation to order the 135/1.8 Plena after having a chance to use one at a recent basketball game. It may be able to fill in for the 200/2 for both portraiture and indoor sports, so it's easy to justify. And the images are nothing short of amazing.

Re: Portrait lens

A few years ago, I rented the 85mm f/1.4G, I wasn¡¯t happy with it. It suffered from pretty bad Chromatic Abberations. Later I rented the 105mm f/1.4E, that¡¯s still a lens I want to own someday. It¡¯s an amazing lens for portraits, with a nice shallow DOF, so shallow in fact that nailing the focus is a real challenge. I¡¯ve also used the Nikkor Ai-S 105mm f/1.8 lens, it¡¯s good as long as you¡¯re not after sharpness when shooting wide open.

I¡¯ve used an old Ai¡¯d 135mm f/2.8 in the past for portraits, and gotten good results. Though I mainly used that lens as a telephoto on my Nikon FM2. I don¡¯t remember if I¡¯ve used it on the D800, or just the D70 or D300.

A note on 85mm lenses. I know jimbo swore by the 85mm f/1.4D, he hadn¡¯t tried the G (and I haven¡¯t tried the D). A little over a year ago, I was lucky enough to pick up a Nikkor Ai-S 85mm f/1.4, and it¡¯s a fantastic lens, though like the Ai-S 105mm f/1.8, it¡¯s a little soft wide open on my D800. Given the opportunity to get a cheap 85mm f/1.4D, I¡¯d probably go for it. I¡¯m actually planning to get a soft focus filter for the Nikkor Ai-S 85mm f/1.4.

For Zoom's, I liked the 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II when I rented it. I now own the 70-200mm f/2.8E VR, and it¡¯s one of the best lenses I own (that includes Leica and Hasselblad). It¡¯s now my primary lens for portraiture. On the 80-200, I can only speak about the manual focus versions, the original of which is garbage, but the last version was quite nice. I know the AF of the 80-200mm is well thought of.

Nikkor 105mm lenses

My daughter has a Senior project that she needs photos for, as a result, I¡¯ve been digging through my archives. One thought is, what lens besides maybe the 50mm itself has as many wonderful and different lenses as the 105mm? I have 3 different Nikkor 105mm lenses, and still lust after the 105mm f/1.4E (I just ran across shots from when I rented it). I have the Ai-S 1.8, 2.8D Macro and 2.8G VR Macro.

Another thought, you might be surprised what happens when you update some of your old photos to the current process version in Lightroom.

XMP files

What ho one and all,

Was downloading some images from my memory card via a card reader in the computer, and decided to have a look at the card? with File Explorer.

Surprised to find that along with the images that I had shot, there where around 200 , old xmp files of various dates over the past six months, the RAW files of which, have been deleted long algo.??? I formatted the card in the camera and checked again, but the XMP files where still there.? I have now deleted them with Fie Explorer but don't understand why they have not been removed when I deleted images from the card.

Grateful of some insight.

Thanks and toodle pip
