Great question Ben!!there, why don't they use it?? Guys, you are making too much about the CCD chip size vs a 35mm frame. I too worried about that very aspect of the camera. But after six months and nearly 15K images (and now holding at about 1 dozen rolls of film in the same time!) I can tell you that it isn't a problem. I am used to the image view and don't have any reservations when i pick it up to shoot. I now have the feel of the camera and can "see" in my mind what the camera will see before I place it to my eye. The only place it becomes a problem is on the wide-angle lens side, there I bought a Sigma 14mm lens and while like everyone else, I would love a wider lens I find the 14mm wide enough to be happy. In my mind I no longer convert the focal length back to standard 35mm format, I just pickup a lens and shoot, it feel natural. FYI: I have the 14mm Sigma, 20-35 Nikon f2.8, 24-120 Nikon, 60mm Nikon, 50mm F1.4 Nikon for low light, and a 80-200 Nikon 2.8 (not the S). Joe McCary - a new member here and glad to join in. |

I've wondered about that for 2 years now!! The 2x3 chip is out there, why don't they use it?? Price??? maybe!! The Philips 2x3 chip might be too expensive!! Even Kodak in their 6MP camera, the DCS 760, uses a little smaller chip, that creates a 1.3x Magnification, compared to the D1,D1X, D1H 1.5x Magnifiacation. I was actually expecting the next generations D cameras to have a full 2x3 chip> Dissapointed?? Maybe a little, but I can't wait to have a D1x in my grubby little paws!! CCD size
Here's something I have wondered about; maybe someone out there can
enlighten me.... On all of the digital cameras (that I know about) that use 35mm camera bodies, such as the Nikon D1, they use a CCD significantly smaller than 24mm x 36mm. So while the D1 can use all/most of the lenses made for the F-series camera, the smaller image size results in a smaller angle-of-view. So, why don't they use a 24mm x 36mm CCD so that their lenses work the way they were designed, angle-of-view-wise? There must be a good reason, since Nikon, Canon, Fuji and Kodak all use these small CCDs. TIA... Ben Tyndall |
Hey, Let's get this show on the road!!
Yamil R. Sued
Let's get the discussions going here guys!! I can't wait for the D1X to
come out!! Any info out there??? Calumet says the end of June & NPS members will have priority!! I've got the NPS membership, & just don't have the $5.5K available just now:-( At this time the D1 is working just fine:-) Between the D1 & Bibble I'm the happiest guy in the world!! We actually use the D1 at work, (the Cabela's Studio) We do whatever we can't do withe the Megavision 3 pass cameras with the D1! We get files as good with the D1 as with the $20,000.00 Megavisions!! So, what's new?? Let's the the info flowing!! Yamil |
