Chanukah and the light within each one of us

Here is an interesting article on Chanukah and the Jewish light since October 7th, written by Rabbi David?Harbater.

Chanukah Same'ach and Shabbat Shalom!

---------- Forwarded message ---------

Chanukah and the light within each one of us

By David Harbater

?

The most common name for the festival that begins this evening is "Chanukah". However, the festival is also known by another name - the "Festival of Lights"- and the question is why. The most obvious answer is that this name refers to the candles that we light in commemoration of the oil in the Temple's menorah that was only sufficient to last for one day but that, miraculously, lasted for eight.?

?

But there is another way to understand the meaning of this name, alluded to in a popular Israeli children's song for Chanukah, which I believe has particular meaning and relevance to us today. Here is the first stanza of the song followed by the chorus:

?

???? ???? ????.

?????? ??? ???.

?? ??? ??? ??? ???,

?????? - ??? ????.

?

???? ????-???? ????!

????-???? ????!

?

We have come to banish the darkness,

In our hands light and fire.

Every person is a small light,

And together - we are a strong light.

?

?

Go away darkness - move on blackness!

Go away - before the light!

?

This song depicts a world filled with darkness and despair which we, the Jewish people, seek to banish by ushering in light. But to what light does the song refer? According to the second line it refers to the light that we hold in our hands, i.e., the candles that we light on Chanukah. Yet from the following line it appears that the writer had something else in mind. Each one of us is a light, and when we come together, that light radiates outward, thus banishing the darkness from the world.

?

Since October 7th the Jewish people have been living in a world filled with darkness. From the unspeakable atrocities committed by Hamas against our people on that horrible day, to the despicable psychological abuse that this evil terror organization has continued to inflict upon us since then, to the appalling rise in antisemitism on college campuses and on the streets around the world, to the deafening silence of international organizations meant to protect the lives of the innocent, to the infuriating refusal of the presidents of elite universities to categorically condemn and outlaw calls for genocide against the Jewish people, we are now living in the dreariest and darkest times that we have known since the Holocaust.

?

Yet, throughout all of this, we, the Jews in Israel and around the world, have been shining a great light. From the moment the war began we have put aside our differences and worked together in unprecedented fashion to provide meals, clothing, medical supplies, toys, books, transportation, and emotional support for both soldiers and the thousands of families who were forced to evacuate their homes. Jews of all backgrounds, stripes and colors have been contributing of their time and money to do whatever is necessary, and beyond, to help one another during these difficult times. We have, each in our own way, become a light to those around us.

?

Furthermore, we are determined to bring our individual lights together to shine one bright light, which is best expressed in the slogan "??? ????" - "together we will be victorious" - which can be seen on television, on tall buildings, on buses and on the streets, and virtually everywhere you turn. These words reflect our sense of solidarity and our understanding that only when we work together can light and goodness overcome the forces of darkness and evil.

?

Let us, therefore, hope and pray that on this Chanukah - the Festival of Lights - our light will shine brightly and drive away the darkness that has pervaded so much of society at this time.

?

Happy Chanukah!

The Lord Dislikes Miracles

Said the Vorker: "It is said (Genesis 26:12): 'And Isaac sowed in that land, and found in the same year a hundredfold; and the Lord blessed him.' This mens: "The Lord thanked Isaac for tilling and sowing his land, and thus enbaling Him to provide for Isaac in a natural manner. For had Isaac not worked his field, the Lord would have been impelled to provide for him in a supernatural manner."

SEFER CHOFETZ CHAIM

Day 83 ¨C Suggesting a Relationship
?
We have seen that it is forbidden to attempt to involve someone in a situation that the person would not want, would he be aware of certain facts.
?
If an acquaintance is seeking a person with years of experience with whom to start a business, one may not recommend someone who appears to be experienced but, in fact, is not ¨C unless the acquaintance is told this.? This holds true even if the person possesses natural talent which seems to compensate for his lack of experience.
?
Often, people feel that they know what their friend is ¡°really looking for¡± far better than the friend himself does, and feel justified in deceiving the friend by providing inaccurate information about a perspective shidduch (marriage match), or employee, with the aim of seeing the shidduch or hiring realized.
?
It is presumptuous and arrogant for one to think that he has the right to make others¡¯ life decisions for them.
Furthermore, it should be understood that the human personality is complex.? Logically, one may seem to have found the perfect match for his friend.? Nevertheless, if one¡¯s friend has developed an attitude ¨C irrational though it may be ¨C that he or she will only marry someone who meets a particular specification, hiding the truth about a prospective mate could have lifelong repercussions.? Upon discovering the truth after the wedding, the person might spend the rest of is married life feeling that he settled for second best.? Even if he was told the truth right before the wedding and nevertheless went through with it, feelings of disappointment might surface later.
?
Such practices, though well intended, constitute giving bad advice and are in violation of ¡°Before a blind person do not place a stumbling block.¡±
?

?
SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON

?
The Way of Moshe

?
A son is required to totally remove himself from his father¡¯s feud when he sees himself as powerless to resolve it. However, in a situation where a father has high regard for his son¡¯s opinion and would allow him to bring the matter to a peaceful resolution, the son is obligated to become involved.
?
Tanna D¡¯Vei Eliyahu Rabbah (ch. 21) states: ¡°One cannot stand silently as his father and mother speak forbidden talk. If he will remain silent, the lives of all three may be cut short.¡¯¡¯1
?
It is a mitzvah for every Jew to make peace between feuding parties. As the Mishnah states (Pe¡¯ah 1:1), this is one of the deeds whose ¡°fruits¡± one enjoys in this world but whose ¡°principal¡± [i.e. primary reward] remains for the World to Come. Even if one side is clearly wrong and is deserving of punishment for having initiated the dispute, and one has the power to bring this punishment upon this person, nevertheless, he should do everything in his power to resolve the matter peacefully. Such was the way of Moshe, who strove to make peace with Dasan and Aviram, though he had the power to bring punishment upon them for their having brazenly opposed him. Thus does the Torah relate, ¡°Moshe stood up and went to Dasan and Aviram¡± (Bamidbar?15:25), to which the Sages comment, ¡°From this we derive that one should not remain steadfast in dispute¡± (Sanhedrin 110a).
?
Because Moshe went to the tents of Dasan and Aviram to make peace, he merited to save four righteous individuals, Ohn ben Peles and Korach¡¯s three sons, from the sufferings of Gehinnom.
?
?

1. Of course, he should intervene respectfully, in consonance with the stringent rules of kibud av v¡¯em (honoring one¡¯s father and mother ¡ª see Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh De¡¯ah ch. 240).

AD Planning To Open A Business

MDH Consulting

Business Opportunity

Important to know before opening your own business:

There are two statistics to be concerned with before you open your own business. Statistics from the Small Business Administration in the U.S. and Maof (Israel's SBA) in Israel.

Statistic 1: Two thirds of new businesses fail within three years.

Statistic 2: 80% of those two thirds were profitable the day they closed.? But, they didn't have any cash left in their bank accounts. Or they overdraft balance was growing.

The reason for Stat 2 is cash flow mismanagement. That is, the entrepreneurs understand their business and clientele, and know how to generate sales. Per their accounting books, they were profitable. However, what they didn't know or understand was how to manage the money once they made a sale. Cash flow mismanagement is the number one cause of business failure among small businesses. Knowing how to manage your cash flow is as important as knowing how to generate positive cash flow to begin with.

MDH Consulting is organizing a group to study basic bookkeeping in Israel (Bookkeeping 1 and 2). The goal isn't that you later do your own bookkeeping. If you do, as the expression goes, you will have a fool for a client. The goal is that you have an understanding of how to manage your cash flow without having to rely on someone else. Understanding cash flow management will improve your odds of success fivefold.

The course is provided by a Beit Shemesh local college under the supervision of the Ministry of Economics. Upon completion you will receive a certificate from the Ministry. The course will cost NIS 3,700.? This is a small investment in your success and a small investment in a business that will cost you hundreds of thousands of shekels to start up.?Much of that investment will be loans that you will have to pay back whether you are successful or not!

Contact me at?michael.humphries2@...?and we can discuss this further.

Note:
Micheal Humphries, the principle of MDH Consulting, holds an MA in Economics from the University of Texas at Austin, and is Deputy Chair of Business Administration at Touro University (TU), where he teaches Finance and Marketing at TU's Jerusalem campus.

MDH Consulting works with MAOF, Israel's Small Business Administration. Your consultation time will be subsidized by MAOF, and we can help you get a business loan with better terms than conventional loans. However, construction of a business plan is a separate function and charged privately.

Only in Ourselves

In the town of Bausk an epidemic occurred. Some Jews wished to organize a committee to investigate whose grave sins had brough so great a calamity upon the city.
The Rabbi, however, dissented. He said: "It is true that penalty implies sins, but we must not search for the sins in others. We must seek them only in ourselves."

SEFER CHOFETZ CHAIM

Day 81 ¨C Breaking up a Harmful Friendship
?
Another form of constructive speech is that which prevents or breaks up a relationship that is harmful to at least one of the parties.? It is correct to suggest that someone distance himself from a person or persons who may have a negative influence upon him.? Similarly, it is proper to inform a parent that someone may be having a negative influence on his child.? All preconditions must, of course, be fulfilled ¨C including verification of fact constructive intent (see Days 43-50).? If the information is not firsthand it may nevertheless be conveyed, provided that it is clearly being presented as secondhand information.
?
With regard to the requirement of accuracy of the information, the Chofetz Chaim(1) suggests that exaggeration may be permissible if that is the only way to convince the person or parent to end the relationship.
?
The Chofetz Chaim adds that it is imperative to explain why conveying the information does not constitute speaking loshon hora, especially when speaking to a child.
?

SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON
?
Father and Son
?
Even if the quarreler is one¡¯s close relative, including his own father, he should, nevertheless, be exceedingly careful not to join the feud.
?
Even if it appears that one¡¯s father is correct in his contentions, one should seek to quell the dispute, rather than to strengthen his father¡¯s hand against his adversary. Aside from the mitzvah of making peace between Jews, one should realize that it is impossible to see things objectively when one of the parties involved is one¡¯s parent. Sifre interprets the phrase, ¡°...your friend who is like your own soul¡± (Devarim 13:7) as a reference to one¡¯s father, whom one loves like his own self. Thus, deciding between the positions of one¡¯s father and his adversary is akin to deciding between the positions of oneself and one¡¯s own adversary.
?
If a father instructs his son to assist him in his dispute, his order must not be obeyed. For, as the halachah states (Yoreh De¡¯ah 240:15), if a father commands his son to transgress even a Rabbinic decree, his order must be ignored, for both father and son are obligated to honor the word of Hashem. This is especially true with regard to the severe sin of engaging in strife.

Rigor Versus Kindness

Rabbi Nachman Horodenker said: "There are two ways of curing offenders. Some claim a cure by inflicting privations, but these usually result in the transgressor becoming embittered against society, and cruel henceforth. Others effect a cure through persuasions which oftentimes transforms the sinner into a man of kindness and helpfulness."

SEFER CHOFETZ CHAIM

Day 80 ¨C Learning from Others¡¯ Mistakes
?
We have seen (Day 11) that it is forbidden to discuss someone¡¯s faults even with people who are aware of these deficiencies, for to focus on a person¡¯s weaknesses is lowly.
?
However, when teaching or offering guidance, one may make use of real-life illustrations of improper behavior in other people and even refer to those people by name, provided that the listeners are already familiar with the behavior of these people.? The use of actual situations to which the listener can relate will deliver a message that mere discussion cannot convey.? Reference to negativity here is constructive and is not considered lowly.
?
Therefore, it is permissible to make reference to the life-style of a non-observant Jew to emphasize weaknesses in his behavior and its consequences, though his lack of observance is rooted in ignorance.? However, one should be careful not to condemn the person.
?
One may not use examples from the past history of a baal teshuva without his permission.? Constructive intent is not a license for possible embarrassment.
?
It is also wrong to use examples from the lifestyles of different ethnic groups within the Jewish nation unless it is clear that neither speaker nor listener is unsympathetic towards that group.
?
?

SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON
?
The Pursuer¡¯s Lot
?
Scripture states: ¡°God always seeks the pursued¡± (Koheles?3:15).
?
The Midrash comments (Vayikra Rabbah 27:5):
?
R¡¯ Yose ben Nehurai said: The Holy One, Blessed is He, always exacts retribution from the pursuers for the blood of the pursued.
?
R¡¯ Elazar said in the name of R¡¯ Yose ben Zimra: So it is with Temple offerings. God said: The ox is pursued by the lion, the goat by the leopard, the sheep by the wolf; do not bring offerings from the pursuers, but only from the pursued.
?
One must refrain from assisting in a feud, lest Hashem hold him accountable for the hurt caused the other party. Rather than anticipate the glory of triumph when his side emerges victorious, let him instead picture the shame and retribution that may be his lot.
?
One who scrupulously avoids dispute is truly honored by others, as it is written, ¡°It is an honor for a man to refrain from quarreling¡± (Mishlei 20:3). The Midrash comments (Yalkut HaMechiri, Mishlei 26:14): If personal dignity demands that one refrain from becoming involved in personal feud, then certainly it demands that one avoid becoming entangled in someone else¡¯s feud! Of those who take the opposite path, Scripture states: ¡°Like someone who grabs hold of a dog¡¯s ears is a passerby who becomes involved in a quarrel not his own¡± (Mishlei 26:17).1
?
  1. The man who grabs hold of a dog¡¯s ears has only himself to blame for the bite that is sure to come (Rashi).

40 Day Gratitude Project For Women

Inviting you to take part in the next 40 day gratitude project for women starting iyH December 7th, ?? ???? for those of you who would like to hop on board!?

They say that crying and begging Hashem is one thing but thanking Him opens new doors in heaven. When we are thankful we bring more joy and reasons to be grateful into our lives and the lives of the people around us. And gratitude is healthy for the mind, body and soul.

The way it works is that you take a couple of minutes each day to thank Hashem through words, writing, a grateful spirit or whichever way you prefer. Include things you are happy about and not so happy about in your life. Being grateful for the whole lot. This is powerful. You are welcome to share your gratitudes during the project or to share miracles you see along the way. Gratitude does invite miracles. I will share the gratitudes you send me with the group, without your name, along with the daily gratitude reminder. There is something incredible about 40 days. And doing this together. Gratitude is a powerful prayer bringing us into the beauty of the moment.?

This round will welcome in Chanukah, an auspicious time for thanking Hashem and feeling His love and light bh!!?

Let me know if you would like to participate. Email and WhatsApp options available for the project. There is no fee.?

Blessings!

I believe I was one of the last to see the kadosh, Harav Elimelech Wasserman ztz"l, conscious, but I am not sure. I described what I saw to his family at the shivah (I had worked with his son, R. Aharon in the past).

R. Aharon is very keen to know about his father's last moments. I need to find the emergency workers who were taking care of him so I can ask them directly if I have interpreted correctly what I saw. I was about 50 meters away within 2-3 minutes of the attack.

If anyone has any contacts with the?police or first responders or any ideas for me, please share them.?

Thanks so much,
